These are two different issues, mostly, but it seemed logical to me to combine them.
Has anyone had handmade cards get lost in the mail? I know for my Christmas cards, I just put an extra ounce stamp on and I think they all went through ok. I had a really thickly layered card come back for extra postage once early on, so I added a second stamp and re-sent it. That one was acknowledged, so I know it got through ok.
Two that I sent to my brother and his girlfriend in July I never heard acknowledged. I didn't think they were that thick, heavy, or inflexible, so I may not have put on extra postage. Just found out they didn't receive them. But then shouldn't the cards have been returned to me?
But I also have a friend who I know has received two handmade cards from me (weren't mailed) that she's never acknowledged.
Now, I admit that I wasn't much of a Hallmark card giver, so I am kind of "zero to sixty in ten seconds" on cards, but still. Do I have bad friends? How many chances do you give someone? Am I being too sensitive about this? I am enjoying making cards, so maybe that should be all the reward I need?

I’ve had handmade cards get lost in the mail before (more than once). It’s a huge bummer, especially when you can’t recreate the card! And if the person is a fellow card lover and you personalized it just for them, it’s just ugh.
And yes I’ve had cards go unacknowledged. It depends on the person and what the card was for, but I try to not let it bother me. I have some friends that are just spacey and wouldn’t think to say they got the card. Sometimes I’ve even had a friend not check her mail for weeks lol

I don't know if I've had some get lost in the mail -it's possible, I guess. I have had some returned due to not being forwardable.
As for acknowledging them? I don't expect people to acknowledge a card (which might be why I don't know if any have been lost). I send them because I wanted to and hoped they would bring cheer or comfort to the recipient.
My kids are terrible about letting me know they received stuff - cards, packages, letters - so I do ask if they got it if I enclosed something or it's a package...Two older ladies (my late mum's besties) always write back - one hangs my cards in her kitchen and tells me her (grown) kids always look for the new one when they visit. My bestie? once in a great while she'll let me know she appreciates all the cards but certainly not regularly. Same with my sister.
I do try and let people know I've received their cards - esp. handmade ones and/or card exchanges.

I have some friends that are just spacey and wouldn’t think to say they got the card. Sometimes I’ve even had a friend not check her mail for weeks lol I have friends who I text to say "check your mail!" because they're so bad about actually opening the box or sorting through things. It's not how I live, unread mail would make me more anxious not less, but I get it. I want them to get the card when it's relevant and they seem to enjoy the cards, so I've gotten used to giving them a heads-up. Bonus, it's something for them to look forward to and they're more likely to tell me they got it when it arrives. But yes, many people I know don't acknowledge gifts and cards and sometimes I have to hint or ask directly to make sure that stuff arrived safely. Just a quick text is nice, but again, I get it, people are busy, etc. I have had very little lost in the mail and I send a lot of things. I've had a couple of cards come back needing extra postage and I've had a couple of friends whose mailboxes were broken into but for the most part I assume things arrive and that they're appreciated and let it go. But people who never even mention the card that took me hours to make probably will get a simpler card next time.

I would never expect someone to acknowledge a card. A gift, yes, but not a card. Then again, I'm not a card maker, so any cards that I send are store bought. Maybe I would feel differently if I'd gone to the effort of making a card?? I don't know.

I really thought I'd opened this thread in card making, not general paper craft. My apologies. I don't know if there's any way to move it.

If I'm feeling depressed, I often don't open my mail for months. I received so many cards when Esther passed away. Just so many. Many from thoughtful peas handmade too. There is no possible way I could have acknowledged them all. And now it is Christmas and cards are rolling in and I am trying to open them as they come in but again, I'm not sure I have it in me to acknowledge all the cards either. And now I'm left wondering if people think I'm an asshole.

While it’s nice if someone acknowledges receiving one of my hand made cards, it doesn’t always happen, even from my friends who also make cards. I don’t expect acknowledgment, and neither do they.

I think if I had located this thread in cardmaking, it would have been more obvious, but I am talking about handmade cards.
I completely agree that it would be completely absurd to expect someone to acknowledge a Hallmark.
And as a relatively new card maker, I had no idea if someone was being a jerk and if so, who the jerk(s) was/were — me, my friends, all of above, or none of the above. Which is why I asked.
I haven’t called anyone out on it or anything because I suspected that might make me the jerk.
A sincere thank you all for the corroboration.

I generally do not acknowledge cards. If I am friends on facebook I may message amd say "Got your card today."
I don't always even keep handmade cards. Sometimes I cannibalize them for my scrapbooks. I certainly enjoy them when I receive them but beyond that I may not treat them differently than a store bought card.

Yes, I would say that sympathy cards are a whole separate thing. I was thinking more of things like birthday cards. My mom's opinion is that if they don't have cash, a check, or a gift card, they'll never be acknowledged, regardless of handmade vs. purchased.
This thread is also making me realize that buying/using the stamp I've seen that says something about a handmade card that shouldn't be treated the same as a mere purchased one is also a jerk move.

OUCH!!! Looks like I need an attitude adjustment. In my defense, I'm fairly new to cardmaking and I'm realizing the work, time and love that goes into making these mini-masterpieces. I've been sending birthday cards to the grandkids for 2 years now, (currently ages 3 to 8) and I have asked if they've received them. This year I added Thanksgiving and Christmas cards to adults and got 1 acknowledgement. I admit, I was looking for the ooh's and ah's. I had decided that if I didn't hear from someone on both cards, I wasn't going to send them any more. (I'm being honest in my motives here, please be kind!)
Those of you who said you make and send cards for the pleasure of making them got my attention. You're right. I do it because I enjoy it. Who cares if I get feedback? I'm going to make what I want to make and send what I want to send and that's that.
This also reminds me that last year I made a big batch of cards for all of the teachers at the local elementary school. I loved making them and leaving them at the front office of the school. They had no idea who I was or who made the cards. I didn't even sign my name. I got a LOT of satisfaction over having done that and hoping that I made someone's day a little better. That was all the feedback I needed then.
I think I need to go back to that mind-set. Thanks folks!! This was just what I needed!! Happy Holidays, all!

Even though WE know how much time, love, and effort goes into a handmade card, for most people, "it's a card" if you know what I mean. When someone shoots me a note I am pleasantly surprised. My darling (30-something) adult son sent me a photo and a "looks like it was professionally made" text the other day when their holiday card arrived. This man has not a crafty bone in his body (how he is MY son is beyond me). That said, my heart grew 3 sizes after that text

Yes, lindamh, I guess I was also hoping for oohs and aahs. But suspicious of my own motivation.

Seems to be getting lots of traction here, though. Up to you. I have had cards returned with address issues (my Christmas lists are always a year old, and people move). Always put full return address on them. I don't expect a card to be acknowledged unless there is cash or a gift card inside, so I guess some of them could have been lost. I HAVE received cards weeks after I knew they had been sent. Made sure to acknowledge those.

It IS getting traction here despite the fact that I have trouble remembering to look here for it.
I’d be OK either way. Thanks!

I've had cards lost before and some that are delivered months after I sent them. I sent a Thanksgiving card to my friend that lives in the same city as I do and she got it in January!! I kind of wonder if it was delivered to the wrong address first or maybe it got stuck at the post office?? I have only had one or two cards sent back for more postage.
I have certain people I send cards to that ALWAYS acknowledge getting them and some who never do. It feels nice to get the acknowledgement that it got there safe & sound though.

i sent homemade cards last money. so far my sister hasn't received hers. i put an extra stamp on it too because the bulky accents made it a little heavier. i wonder who else hasn't received theirs.
