They are worth going after, like with a yardstick or something.
But they'll be covered in the debris that collects under appliances.
Thoughts on how to de-fuzz?
Maybe the pharmacy/insurance would believe her if she told them what happened? Pain meds are such a pain!

Could you do a quick rinse under the faucet and then dry them off?

Maybe retrieve them, dust and all, and the pharmacy will exchange them for you? It might be worth a phone call to find out.

I would retrieve and call the pharmacist - tell them what happened and ask their advise - they'll be able to tell if it's safe to rinse off or dust off or might offer to exchange

Just wipe them off.

I'd blow the dust off and take them. I would take them as my next pill/pills and would not put them into the container with the clean ones.

Another vote for just dusting, and not getting them wet. I haven't ever seen under a stove, as I've always had built-in ones, but I wouldn't think it would be super greasy or anything underneath it...?
Disclaimer, I'm not very germ-phobic.

Disclaimer, I'm not very germ-phobic. We aren't either, but they have mice, so.... How long have they been down there? Are they laying in a pile of mouse poop or urine? If not, I would dust them off and take them. The reality is, most people have already ingested something that has already been touched by a mouse if they have ever drank from a coke can or something similar.

Either keep them separate and dust them off and use them or take the few to the pharmacy and ask them to exchange them. I'd go to the pharmacy since they have mice.

OK then, knowing about mice, I guess I agree with milocat. I'd probably try the pharmacy. If they won't exchange them, then I'd suck it up and use them anyway, cringing the whole time. But then again, mom is probably right, we've likely all eaten worse without knowing it. How sad that this even has to be a discussion, though. It should be straightforward. Of course, this is coming from someone who's literally planned vacations around when ADHD meds are up for refills, so I definitely understand.

Knowing how hard it is to get a refill for controlled substances that are too soon to be filled, if it didn't look like mice droppings were under there, I agree with everyone else to dust them off and take them.
If you do call the pharmacy, let us know what they say. I'm curious.

If she says they were in the floor, possibly by mice, the pharmacy would hopefully exchange the dirty pills for clean ones.

I predict the pharmacy won't exchange them, but will make your mother purchase new pills. I don't know how it will be resolved because of the controlled substance laws.

My first action would be to try to exchange them at the pharmacy. If that is not an option, I would dust them off and keep them separate from the others until needed. Then, just before taking a "floor" pill, I would rinse it off with water before putting it in my mouth. That should wash off any coating that would be contaminated from being under the stove.
You might want to check with the pharmacy before rinsing, though, and make sure that won't be a problem. I can't imagine it would be, but just in case.

The value of the pills to my health would matter more than what lurks under the stove. Then again, I happily wear my diamond earring that went through the digestive/excretory system of my dog. Life gets a bit yucky now and then. We survive.

Call the pharmacist and ask for directions. Hopefully, if your mom brings the pills into the pharmacy they can waste them and replace them w/new ones.

I think pain pills are a tier1 drug and free on most health insurance programs. I don't think druggists take pills back, however maybe they accept that you documented the event a give you a special price. The only place I have found to dispose of pills is the police station.
Being up to date on all my shots and meds I would still dispose of them. Just another speed bump in life. Actually we don't have "Speed Bumps" we have "Traffic Calming Devices".

I don't know about that. Mine are not free and Tier 2 and I have to have a paper script for them. They cannot be called in. And if they couldn't be replaced then that person does not have any extra pain meds. Some people need all that is written out for them.

Are you working or retired? Right now my wife is in Home Care Hospice and I am the 24 - 7 caretaker, all her old meds are gone and her new meds are free, so we don't have a problem with disposing of damaged medications.

don I am still working. So regular insurance. We have found paying cash for some scripts are cheaper than insurance co-pays. Mine is a Schedule 2 drug. I can't remember what the last payment was. I get a script refilled every 6 mos and then if needed, can get additional. I try to only use them when the need is great. It's a hassle to get another script as my doctor is out of town.

You could wipe them off with an alcohol wipe since it dries so quickly it probably wouldn't dissolve the pill any, and it would disinfect as well.
