We have some favorite cookies that we only make at Christmas. They are ridiculously cute and ridiculously sweet and ridiculously time consuming, but worth it because we all love them.
You have to make each cookie individually using a mold, and then bake. And decorating involves painting details, a shimmer powder on his cheeks and nose, and piping with different tips.
4 hours later, I was just finishing decorating them when my 15yo son ate one, and said it tasted weird. Yep, the frosting has a weird aftertaste. My mom brought some powdered sugar when we made gingerbread houses a few weeks ago, and I didn’t think anything of using it. The bag had never been opened, but after investigating, she has written on a corner, in Sharpie, 3/12. I think this means she bought this powdered sugar in Mar 2012. And I didn’t think powdered sugar went bad, but after today I’ve changed my mind.
And now I’m throwing away these adorable cookies, and I get to start over again tomorrow.

Uggghh! I would be so disappointed. sometimes when we go to MILs, I go through her fridge or cabinets to see what is ancient.
Amd I recently found that I need to start doing that with my mom as well.

Pic, so someone can at least see them since we won’t be eating them.

Oh my gosh they’re adorable and I can’t imagine the time it takes to do all that detail! They look professional. I’m sorry they don’t taste good.

They’re so adorable that’s really sad. I guess it’s too late to shellac and poke a hole in them, put thread or something through and hang them as ornaments? They’re just adorable. I once bought a shellacked cookie Noah, ark and animals made for hanging on a wall and had them for years before they faded too badly or broke.

Those are so cute! I’m sorry something was off with the powdered sugar and they taste so bad. I never thought of powdered sugar going bad!

Hang them on your tree. They are adorable. Or hang them outside for the critters? Anyway to just scrape the icing off and do that part again, rather than baking all new cookies.

Did anybody taste the cookie itself, or just the icing? Something might be salvageable. And, you weren't wrong--powdered sugar can last indefinitely--assuming it's in an airtight, moisture-proof container. I hate to see all that work be for nothing.

They’re so cute but man that’s a lot of work. I bought all the ingredients for cookie baking and just wasn’t feeling it. So I went to my favorite bakery and bought some.
No one in my family was remotely interested in cookie baking this year so I wasn’t either.

That’s disappointing. I made some sugar cookie bars last night that were disgusting and went straight into the garbage. At least they weren’t too time consuming like yours.

Those cookies are just adorable and they all look the same....very impressive.

What a shame! Well, at least they are adorable! I didn't think sugar went bad either. Okay. I just asked Mr. Google because I need to know this. Apparently, if properly stored in an airtight container, sugar has an indefinite shelf life. And if it has developed lumps that means moisture has gotten in and it should be thrown out.
Maybe since hers was just in its original box, something was absorbed into the sugar itself?

Hot glue a piece of straw to the back and string with ribbon. These are too pretty to throw in the bin.
You could hang them on a tree, add them to wreaths, make a garland, add to gifts, or send to me so I can do those things. 😆
