Gennifer are these the cookies you're making? A few days ago a friend was talking about the special santa cookies his mom makes at christmas time and he shared the recipe with me (warning: the recipe below is a bit rambling and a bit racist - it's from 1969).

Are they shortbread? My friend’s dad just gave me three plastic shoeboxes full of Brown Bag Cookie molds but no recipe. After spending that much time on them I would absolutely dry them out and spray them with sealant and hang them on the tree. They’re awesome!

Thanks for all the sympathy, guys! To answer a few questions, yes, the cookies were fine, and we tried scraping the frosting off a few of them, but I could still sort of smell the “off” scent and I didn’t want to go to all of the work of decorating them again and still having them taste bad. The shellacking/ornament comments made me laugh! They actually aren’t that time consuming to make when you have a few people, it’s just that I was doing them on my own. We’ve already made them twice this year, but took them to family parties, so I’ll make my kids help tomorrow and we’ll have them done in an hour or so. And we’ll only do a single batch… I did a double batch today (4 doz cookies) because I was going to take some to my dad and a few local friends who asked about them. Ryann, yes, those are the same cookies! We’ve made them my whole life, but I don’t think the recipe we use is the one that is included. We definitely don’t decorate them the way they say to, I think it has raisins and coconut for the beard? They have molds for other holidays too, and my kids have tried to get me to order them, but I think part of what makes them so good is that we only have them at Christmas. The cookies and frosting have almond extract, which makes them very distinctly flavored.

Uggghh! I would be so disappointed. sometimes when we go to MILs, I go through her fridge or cabinets to see what is ancient. Amd I recently found that I need to start doing that with my mom as well. I had to really start doing it for myself. The other day it was the medications drawer and yesterday it was the baking shelves and bathroom drawers. Good gravy, why did I have so many unopened containers of cornstarch and baking powder? I waffled on a container of Dutch process cocoa that expired earlier this year. I really need to throw that out. Maybe tomorrow.

I’d googled a few years ago when my favorite cocoa powder was past the use by date and I couldn’t find a replacement. (Rapunzel organic, so good.)

I made a batch of DH's cookies and didn't realize until they were all mixed up that the shortening had gone bad. It was not even expired! I can't imagine how dissappointed I'd be if those gorgeous cookies Gennifer made were inedible.

Your cookies are beautiful! I don’t bake or decorate anything but I just ordered that mold. What was I thinking? 😂 Any recipe or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Your cookies are beautiful! I don’t bake or decorate anything but I just ordered that mold. What was I thinking? 😂 Any recipe or tips would be greatly appreciated. Yes! I’m so excited! Here’s our recipe: Cookies- 1 c. shortening 1 1/2 c. sugar 4 eggs 1 t. almond 1 t. vanilla 4 c. flour 1 t. salt 4 drops red food coloring red food coloring (frosting and cheeks) blue food coloring (eyes) Frosting- 7 c. powdered sugar 2 t. almond 2/3 c. shortening just enough milk to make stiff frosting Cream shortening and sugar. Mix in eggs, one at a time. Add rest of ingredients. Press dough into molds, turn out on parchment and bake 14 minutes at 325°. Color small portion of frosting red for hat; leave remainder white. Use diluted blue food coloring for eyes, and diluted red food coloring for mouth and cheeks. A few tips: The dough should be almost the consistency of play dough. Before the first cookie, I press dough into the mold first to get it a little greasy (make sure you get the crevices) and then pull it out and dust the mold with flour. When you are making them, you want enough dough in there that it sort of mounds a little on the back, and then you kind of slam it down on the parchment and it should stick and you can peel it off. Then flour the mold between each cookie.

Beautiful cookies! That brings back memories--my grandmother had a Santa Claus cookie cutter that she would use to make sugar cookies. She would dilute food coloring to color his clothes red (it was a full body cookie cutter) and boots black. I can't remember what she did for his beard and the white parts of his outfit. Granulated sugar, I think.
Some years after she passed away, my aunt (her daughter) had the same cookie cutters made for all the grandchildren. I should make a batch this year!
Thanks for sharing!

Well, I tried to order the mold, but they were sold out. Did the peas do that? There is another Santa that comes in a packaged deal with an Indian, but the Santa looks a bit different. I’ll just wait for them to be back in stock.

I can't believe you didn't lick the icing spoons after mixing or transferring to piping bags. I wouldn't be able to resist! LOL

I can't believe you didn't lick the icing spoons after mixing or transferring to piping bags. I wouldn't be able to resist! LOL I did. The frosting itself tasted fine, but there was a weird aftertaste. My husband couldn’t taste anything off. My daughter couldn’t at first, but then agreed with me. It was very subtle, and we thought (hoped?) that when it was on the cookie it wouldn’t be noticeable because the cookie has such a strong almond flavor. My older son ate a cookie, with frosting, and didn’t notice anything. It was when my second son said it was weird that I gave up and tossed them.
