I'm cleaning out my closet. I've already got two backs to donate and a large clothes hamper of dress pants to take to Clothes Mentor. They are at least two sizes too big.
But as I am putting them in their bins, I'm having a slight freak out. They are perfectly good clothes. What if I gain weight and them have to buy new clothes when these are fine?
I know I don't need them. I don't want to store them as I prepare to move, but that isn't keeping me from a mild anxiety attack.
It's fine, right?

What if... You don't gain weight and you end up keeping them and no donating them toast someone who could use the now? At least give equal airtime to both possibilities

I've done this so many times. It's ok to keep one pair of fat pants and one pair of skinny pants at all times.
Donate the rest, you won't regret it because you'll forget you ever even had them and they're probably outdated by the time you'd need them again.

What if you keep them - and if you did gain weight they are completely out of style? I had that happen to me in the reverse. Finally lost weight and clothes I had held onto for 8 years no longer were in style - and I tend to dress in classic styles!
Marie Kondo those too big clothes, thank them for their service and pass them on to be enjoyed by someone else.
And congratulations on losing 2 sizes of weight!

I donate clothes all the time, including the ones that are too big or was bought for a certain reason. Why should I hold on to something that may never get worn again?
Let someone who will wear them right now have them.

I would keep a couple pairs of you do really love them. If they aren’t really your style anymore I’d donate. I find regardless how “good” the clothes are - pants change style enough by about 5 years I’d be ready to move on.

I lost weight and put all my XXL and size16 stuff in a clear container. I will keep it there for one more year then donate it all. I figure 2 years holding onto stuff is long enough. Good luck. It’s scary I get that. I am still in limbo, too.

Let them go! You may never be that size again, and styles change.

I'm having the same problem except I got fat. I need to just donate it all because when I get skinny again I'll end up shopping as a reward.

It’s ok to let it go. I need to go through all my drawers and closet and do a major purge as well. I just don’t have room for it all and I’ve lost weight too. Anything that doesn’t fit me or that I don’t love is going. Let’s face it, I’m always going to keep shopping. So you are in good company, we can do this together!

Let them go! Keep 1-2 items if you must, but lose the excess. You will feel amazing once you only have things around you that fit and you like.

Of course it’s ok! Mostly, it’s better not to have excess junk taking up space but also, it can be an incentive to not slide back into old habits if you know you’d have to buy a bunch of new clothes.

The ones causing me the most pause are the dress pants/trousers. They don't really go out of style. But they also can't be worn with a belt and they literally fall down while I walk.
I'm hoping not to get that size again, but I know I've gained about 10 lbs since August. I could gain the other 40ish back too.

Let them go. If your weight fluctuates go to Clothes Mentor and buy yourself some new clothes that fit.

I have done several clean outs over the past couple of years. I got rid of constantly probably 25%-50% of my clothes. This year I did what I consider my final clean out and got rid of anything I really didn’t wear. I only have 40 hanging items. It’s been maybe 6 weeks. The first 2 weeks I keep telling my best friend what a bad idea it was even though I knew I wasn’t wearing any of it. Now I don’t miss any of it. A lot was from pre-pandemic when I went in the office. I go in once a week now. I’m slowly rebuilding my wardrobe buying one or 2 things a season and really wearing them. Thing is I don’t miss it and I actually love seeing the room in my closet.
I have been saying I’m a minimalist for at least 3 years and by that I mean I make meaningful purchases. It took probably 5 years to get here to the zero clothes closet as I call it. Do what feels comfortable now. Then do it again in a couple of months. Then do it again. Keep going but also please think about what you bring in and why you bring it in.

I went back to work after giving away one closet full of work clothes. I kept enough professional clothes to get me through my last job that was WFH. When I went back to the classroom, I realized that many of my current work clothes were not that current. I ended up buying new things. To be fair, most of my out of style clothes were pants/slacks. The blouses, shells, and sweaters still worked.
I would get rid of most of what you want to donate. It will be harder to gain back the weight if you don't have clothes that fit.

I pulled a bunch of tee shirts from hangers in my closet and folded them neatly in a pile that sat in my closet for a good long time. I was talking to my therapist and she challenged me to actually donate them so someone else could wear them since I wasn't. I went in with a paper bag and added the shirts to it neatly and promptly took it out to my car. That was Thanksgiving break. I don't miss them. I then went into my sweater drawer and pulled all my sweaters out (many from 15+ years ago) and let my 11 year old take what she wanted from them and the most of the rest went into a paper bag to give away. Then I did the same with my leggings. I went back to my closet and did the same with my long sleeve tees. I have probably 50 empty hangers and my closet is STILL full. I need to go and prune more.
The weird thing- I don't miss any of it. NONE. I'm sure I could empty most of my closet and not miss any of it either. I have at least 40 skirts sitting in there that I LOVE LOVE LOVE but I never wear them so really how much do I love them? My style has changed- I used to wear skirts and cute tee's/cardigans to the classroom. Now I wear jeans and leggings and tee shirts and hoodies.
I should go thru my shoes. Oh, the shoes! So many cute shoes. I have storage for all of them so it's not like I need to space but will I ever wear them?

What a friend did while losing weight was buy clothes at Value Village. I like to donate clothing at Salvation Army. They give me a coupon for in the store then I give it to someone with a cart of stuff in the store. If your clothes are for wearing to work maybe you have an organization that will outfit people going into the workforce for free.

I'd keep my favorite items that aren't easy to find. I dislike clothes shopping and I know my weight fluctuates so I'd hate to spend more money if I need a size up. Saving the clothing doesn't change my habits. LOL
With that said, I have 4 pant sizes of my favorite dress pants. If I love it, I keep it.

They are at least two sizes too big. Maybe I'd keep a pair in the next size up, but no way would I have clothes two sizes too big sitting in my closet. Donate them. After moving way too many clothes around the country for a couple years, I ruthlessly purged my closet with no regrets. Donate those clothes.

I recently lost almost 50 pounds and two sizes. It’s amazing what a heart attack by pass surgery will do to my eating habits. I cleaned out of my closet of everything that is too big. I donated clothes I had never worn. I want no incentive to return to my former size. Donate them.

There are lots of people out there that could put them to good use. Keep 1-2 pairs and donate the rest. They will go to those who need them.

I’d probably keep a few of my very favorite items and donate or sell the rest. Since it’s mostly workwear there is probably a charity that helps outfit women going into the workforce for free, that’s where I would want it to go if it was me.

Give them away! Let someone else benefit from them now, while they’re recent and in style.
