Medication vent ahead…..
My DS (6) has had a fever off and on for the past week. We’ve been monitoring it and making sure it didn’t get too high. We haven’t been giving fever reducers because it’s not gone higher than 102. Last night his ear started hurting and we gave him Tylenol. We have ONE dose left and can’t find any anywhere, which I figured was going to be the case, hence the just been monitoring. I had a video appointment with his doctor this morning and he suspected flu being the reason for the temps and ear infection the reason for the ear pain. He prescribed amoxicillin. I drove an hour to the pharmacy to get it (Stockton Kaiser) only to wait in line to get it filled and be told it will be a half hour and then 3 minutes later get told that they don’t have any in the pharmacy but that another Kaiser (Manteca) a half hour away has it. So, they transferred it there and DD and I drove there to get it. What the hell? There’s a shortage of childrens tylenol and antibiotics now too?
Thankfully his doctor told me that I can split an adult Tylenol or Motrin and crush it to give him pain and fever relief.
This winter can’t end soon enough!

Oh I believe it.
Local pharmacies here are out of Amoxicillin and Augmentin so kids with strep are having a real hard time. From what I've read, manufacturers were not anticipating this high need for meds this early in the season.

My sister had a bladder infectin and the pharmacy she normally goes to didn't have it, so she had to go to one 20 miles from her. Awful. Hope you son gets better fast.

I know the amoxicillin comes in powder and has to be mixed prior to dispensing.

Our Pharmacy has Pedialyte freeze popsicles on the shelves that might help. Some stores have the Tylenol behind the counter with the Pharmacist. Warn tepid baths help too

I am having to fill my rx for amoxicillin now that way I have it for dental work at the end of January. I have to pre-med for any dental work or any procedure or surgery due to my CHD.
There is a shortage for adults too.
Friends are having a hard time getting the Z pack as well as Augmentin and some other med.

Warn tepid baths help too He won’t eat the pedialyte but we have otter pops and he’s been enjoying them. He doesn’t really seem to be bothered by a fever until it’s over 101. I’ve asked at all the places I’ve been. Tepid baths was where we were going to go if it got much higher. We gave the Tylenol because of the pain, not fever. I think we’re ok for now and we have lots of adult acetaminophen and Motrin we can cut if need be. 🙃

It's the same in the UK. We have a Strep A/scarlet fever outbreak and the pharmacies can't get phenoxymethylpenicillin or any liquid antibiotic. Tinies are having to be given amoxycillin tablets crushed up in jam the way they were given when I was a child. I still remember apricot jam being adulterated forever with the taste of rotten eggs.

I am happy to read that you are able to cut an adult dose if necessary and that your son is feeling better already. I had no idea that pharmacies were experiencing shortages in these medications. I hope everyone gets what they need. Strange times, isn’t it?

My son was prescribed a Zpack yesterday and I dreaded heading to the pharmacy. I had them fax it to the one that is on the way home, not the one closer to my house. But they had it and the advil cold & sinus that they keep behind the counter too - my more local cvs did not have that.

There is a pharmacist that makes TikTok videos, and he has been showing how to correctly make a suspension of powdered antibiotic from capsules for children. How to get the correct does, and how to mix it in a strawberry or chocolate syrup to make it palatable. This has been an ongoing shortage for quite a while. Hope your tot is feeling better soon!

I'm going to see what he does. Not that I'm going to try it from some random but I can check with my pediatrician to see if it's ok. Makes it go down easier. Thanks for the well wishes. I think he's headed in the right direction.

I'm going with milk as eggs are already in short supply.

I was unable to get a prescription for cough medicine filled last week due to a nationwide shortage. It finally came available this week but my cough is gone now.

I have gone to multiple different stores and all of the shelves are completely cleared of infant and children’s ibuprofen and acetaminophen. I was finally able to find the tiniest bottle of infant ibuprofen yesterday to keep on hand, I don’t usually stock up on those things so I had none!

Youngest dd was just prescribed an inhaler and prednisolone for her cough. The pharmacist told us there is also a shortage of prednisolone.

Damn, this is terrible. My father is taking daily antibiotics after getting sepsis this year following a knee replacement. We came close to losing him (he's 83) but he pulled through. He's looking much better these days and is now walking without a cane. He'd been using a cane after the surgery until recently. I sure hope this shortage doesn't affect him.
I hope all of the Peas are able to get the medication they need.
I've been reading for the past few years about the vast amount of antibiotics we in America feed livestock and how one day that will come back to bite us in the butt. 13.23 million pounds of "medically important" antibiotics were sold in 2020 for use in livestock according to an article in Wired. The worry there is that if this continues it will generate superbugs that can harm human health. If you'd like to read the article you can find it here: wired.com/story/antibiotic-use-in-us-farm-animals-was-falling-now-its-not/

This does not surprise me. Almost all antibiotics are produced in China. Every now and then there is a news article about this and the problems we may have with such a crucial class of drugs being sourced from a communist country we have uneasy relationship with. Yet, I'm not sure anything is being done about it.
DH takes Tylenol daily for pain as he can't take anti-inflammatory medications. I ordered some from our local Walmart this week. They had both generic and name brand in stock.
I'm glad you got your medicine.
