Guests are greeted by fresh flowers, paintings of the park made by artists-in-residence, and even bathroom attendants, all set to a background of curated classical music. Large frosted glass windows let light gently spill into the space. The toilets, sinks, and other fixtures are the same luxury brand used at the MoMA.

I have heard of it but have not seen it in person, only pictures. I will be in NYC in March. That will be a great time to check it out. Actually, I was wrong. This is the Bryant Park luxury bathroom I was thinking of. www.atlasobscura.com/places/bryant-park-bathroom

Years ago we would go to the American Girl Doll store, because my little girls loved them - and they had the nicest bathrooms! LOL

Wow I had no idea that was there
Usually in cities we travel to that require lots of walking we try to duck into nicer hotels because there is usually a washroom in the lobby

Sadly, that may have become the case because homeless (sometimes belligerent) would take refuge in them.

Sadly, that may have become the case because homeless (sometimes belligerent) would take refuge in them. And it drew strangers, not just homeless, into the lobbies and they were just hard to police/keep clean. I get it. If I'm trying to use their bathroom as a public bathroom, so are a ridiculous amount of other people.

They may wind up going the way of New Orleans, where no place allows use of the facilities without a purchase--but minus the fun of open beverage carry. Sigh. All things wind up becoming smaller, it seems.

I wish the US would get on board with clean, safe, monitored, for-pay restrooms everywhere like Europe does.

I have visited this restroom and it is lovely. The customers were all well behaved when I was there.
I was married at an officer’s mess on an airforce base and the restrooms were lovely there - beautifully decorated with seating area, etc. would have been happy to hold the wedding in there lol.

That is also a throw back to times when women wanted to use restrooms that people of color didn't use. The prevailing thought was that if you were white you could afford to go into a clean, well appointed restroom to be served by women of color. In my opinion, no one should have to pay for a basic human function.

I have had the sad experience of not having the correct coin and just about peeing on myself until someone came out and I could rush into the stall before the door closed.

In my opinion, no one should have to pay for a basic human function. Hm. I hear you. IME in Germany, the cost was very low. It wasn’t a barrier for most people to use. The pay kiosks gave change so there was never an issue with having the right coin. There’s no sense of anyone being excluded. What I appreciated was being able to use a restroom in a train station or a heavily trafficked tourist area and have it be clean, private, and stocked with toilet paper. IIRC it was like 1 euro. It was not in any way fancy or exclusive. Just clean. The alternative is that you find yourself in lower Manhattan and pee yourself (or bleed through your pants, as I did) because there is no public restroom you can find for free or otherwise. Or in Paris, you find yourself at the Louvre the afternoon the custodians go on strike, and the bathrooms are overflowing and without a scrap of paper anywhere. Not sure that’s really equality. Everyone is equally screwed, I suppose - except men, who can just go behind a building or tree. So all women are equally screwed. (And while it’s nice of NYC to provide this one very nice restroom for the use of anyone, if the line is so long you can’t hold it, what good does that do?)

Reminds me one time I was in Branson, MO and my son and dad went to use the restroom in the Shoji Tabuchi Theatre. I thought goodness, there must be a huge line to use the restroom. After quite sometime, they finally came out and was jabbering about how nice it was and they were playing pool with Shoji. lol

I have a serious digestive disorder. It has been mostly in remission for years, but particularly when I lived in Manhattan, I got to know really well where every single possibly accessible bathroom might be (it helped that i was a small white woman). We really need to do better.
