He lives in Reno and they are affected by CA crazy weather. He was helping someone in need, but I haven't heard the details.

I thought this story was confusing before, but now that I know that he was driving the snow plow (or at least it was his?) it is even more confusing.
Also, I think Nevada has their own weather. Not that California weather is affecting Nevada. The weather doesn’t revolve around California.

I read someplace that the plow didn't have a kill switch so if he fell off it kept going.
We used to race motorcycles and the riders have a ball strapped to their wrist by a leather strap. If you fall off it automatically pulls the ball out and the engine stops.
Probably not the same type of kill switch on the plow but some mechanism that stops the engine if the driver falls or gets off. Evidently his plow didn't have one or it malfunctioned.
ETA: He may have fallen off, the plow kept going and ran over him.

Not that California weather is affecting Nevada. The weather doesn’t revolve around California. The article I just read said that he was not on the snowplow when it started moving and he tried to jump into the driver's seat to stop it. I'm assuming he fell during his attempt to get on and get it under control and it subsequently ran over him.

I had imagined a pushable snow plough that I've seen people use to clear their drive way but the photo on the BBC site shows a full size machine that you drive. According to the same article, it's three times the weight of a car.
I'm amazed he can even send a tweet so soon. Hope he makes a full recovery.

Again, the world and weather doesn’t revolve around California. The weather system is affecting both states. The way you state it sounds very California-centric. For example, it is snowing in Minnesota and Iowa right now. I wouldn’t say “Iowa is really affected by our Minnesota weather.” Both states are being affect by the same weather system.

In Malibou's defense, the headline (national network) news is all about the 'atmospheric weather monster that is about to hit the West Coast. She's just adding perspective that Reno is close enough to the California border that it's affected by the exact same storm, that's all. Not everyone knows right off the top of their head where exactly Reno lands within the Nevada borders. Its just helpful information. and on that note....California forever, goodbye ![](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/W4b_Om5roEadLiOzGo_l.jpg) IYKYK.

and back to topic,
So poor guy was trying to help a relative who was driving his car and got stuck. Who'd have thought a routine thing he did all the time like driving his snow plow could be so deadly.
I feel terrible for him. The pain and suffering he must be going through...let alone the long recovery and the unknowns if he can even recover fully. So so sad for him.

Reno is down the hill from Lake Tahoe, it is most definitely affected by the current CA weather. Hmm, okay. Not sure how what I wrote has you assuming that I think in any manner that CA is the center of the world and that weather revolves around us. CA doesn't typically have weather that is in anyway notable outside of continued drought. The pile of weather systems sitting out in the Pacific are taking aim at CA and hammering parts of CA in a way that has our weather being talked about much like FL gets talked about when a hurricane is ripping thru. Yes, the hurricane often times affects other states, but not before being downgraded to the point that we don't really hear much about its affect on them. The hurricane, will be henceforth referred to, by name, as the hurricane that pummeled FL in whichever year. This weather system will be talked about for years as the CA weather system of 2023. San Francisco has repeatedly broken rainfall records over the past week that have stood for 173 years, and will likely to continue to break that record several more times in the coming days. There will be loads of historical sites and buildings that will never recover from this weather event. North and south of San Francisco, rivers, damns, and levees are bursting causing devastating damage, all of which isn't likely to change our drought status by much. Entire roads and towns being washed away, millions of people being asked to evacuate. With the copious quantity of fires we have experienced in recent years, there are tremendous burn scars, that when mixed with an unprecedented weather event like CA is experiencing leads to deadly landslides. The amount of snow that is dumping on the Sierra Mountains will lead to ski resorts being shut down because of an immense likelihood of avalanches, which aren't that common there. Those same mountains are also causing this weather event to break up and settle down as it passes into our adjacent states to the east. These weather systems are by and large affecting just CA and sneaking a bit into our border states, which includes Reno Nevada that is on the back side of the Sierras, the rest of Nevada isn't really being affected by this weather. This is a CA weather system, an unprecedented CA weather system. If MN gets hit by a big storm swooping in from Canada, but is largely not affecting other bordering states, but it leaks into Iowa, Wisconsin and North Dakota a bit, it will still be referred to as the weather system that hammered MN with little mention, other than locally, of its affect on neighboring states.

He was using a Snowcat, which is a tractor like machine on tracks, not wheels. He pulled out a family member, got out to talk to them and the Snowcat rolled over him.
I have known two people that have been killed, pulling someone out of snow. It is VERY dangerous. I told my kids in no uncertain terms when they were younger - you NEVER pull anyone out. Call the wrecker. ALWAYS.
We get people stopping sometimes to get pulled out and we just say we can't do it. We are happy to call a wrecker and they are more than welcome to come in our house to stay warm, but the liability of pulling someone out is too great, and too dangerous.

iowgirl.. yes.. that piston bully snowcat is a very unusual machine to be owned by a private individual.. it is usually found in a ski area.. pulling grooming equipment, etc.
and it would take a different set of skills than using a snowplow..like a truck or a blade on a pickup truck.

Yes! My DSIL's job is operating one at Heavenly Resort in Tahoe. He was telling us about the training he had to have especially getting in and out of the cab because of the danger when it is snowing or icy.

I was glad to see his update from his hospital bed, he looks rough but like he's doing well and really appreciated all the support he's received. Such a nice guy, hope he makes a full recovery from this! My DD is on her 3rd season running snowcats in UT at a few different resorts and they have had a huge amount of early snow to deal with. She's pretty excited to drive a brand new, huge (to me, I saw the semi it came in on) snowcat this year in addition to leading a couple of crews. She's very safe and follows protocols but I've definitely got a new awareness of how dangerous they can be
