What a beautiful place. I'm not surprised you're home sick. Is that you in the second lot of photos? Yeah, that's me. Lovely photos.

Beautiful, beautiful area of the planet! I have relatives all across Canada, but none from Newfoundland. I'm going to file a complaint. And that is from both my mom and dad. They were both born in Canada, both from large families, and they have siblings (well, had siblings. Most have passed away by now) spread out in almost every province. I now have cousins from Victoria Island to some place in New Brunswick. My parents had to be the adventurers and move to the US. I need to go see your part of the country. Those photos just take my breath away. I'll even try the fish and brewis. I don't eat much salt, but it would be worth trying. The tongue didn't look too bad, actually.

I'm from B.C. and I've yet to make it to the Maritimes. Something I want to change, soon.

Beautiful!! I'm jealous that your boys get to spend the summer there.
Adding that to my list, Quebec is already on the list because that is where my family is from. But no Newfoundland is going to be right after.

Dalai Mama my cousin and his family drove from Alberta to Newfoundland last summer. They took a 5 week road trip and looking at their schedule it was just crazy! Travelled 15 hours straight some days. Not my idea of a fun road trip but they did manage to make it to Newfoundland and absolutely loved it! This year it's Alberta to Yellowknife. Eta: wonder why my @ didn't work. Eta: figured it out, don't add a space.

Beautiful! I can see why you would miss it. I am in Texas and have never seen an iceburg so I would totally freak and geek out about that

We were just in this area last June. We rented a cottage in Elliston for 4 days so I could photograph the puffins. We visited Bonavista and Trinity while we were there. We also spent 2 days in St. John's, 3 days at Cape St Mary to photograph the Northern Gannets and 4 days in Witless Bay. We took two whale watching trips there where we saw humpback whales, puffins and murres. It rained most of the time except while we were in Elliston but we still enjoyed the trip and would go back (but maybe not in June!) We almost hit a moose our first 2 hours with the rental car. She ran in front of us but then veered right and my husband veered left. I did not get a picture of it, but we did see another moose on our last day that I did get a photo of.
We are heading back east in a few weeks for a family reunion. I was born in Nova Scotia on the Atlantic Coast. Can't wait.

That is breathtaking! No wonder you are homesick. I would be too. My hometown is nowhere even 1/4 that lovely.

Karene, the moose are a huge issue because they have no natural predators (no wolves on the island). There are a staggering number of moose related traffic fatalities every year. Did you manage to see any whales on your tour? If you ever get a chance, there is a whale snorkelling excursion that goes out of Petty Harbour. Not for the delicate, but oh so worth the cold.

There are no words.
I thought my "I really, really want to go there" list was long enough...and now I've added another place to it. Unbelievably gorgeous. I'd be homesick too.
PS...I love those rare occasions when you post pictures of yourself! You're so pretty!

Hi Dalai Mama,
Yes we saw humpbacks out of Witless Bay. We took a morning tour and saw some and had lunch and because we enjoyed it so much, we went back out on another tour with a different company. We saw backs and tails but no breaching.
So far we have whale watched near Digby in the Bay of Fundy, at Lunenburg, Nova Scotia and off Cheticamp, Cape Breton. When we go out to Nova Scotia in August, we are travelling through New England for a change and I hope to whale watch out of Gloucester, Massachusetts and maybe Lunenburg again. Lunenburg is our favourite town, so we always visit when we are out there.

Here is the moose we saw on our last day. We were driving from Witless Bay to Cape Race. It was very foggy.

Can you please adopt me so I can go there? That is so incredibly gorgeous scenery! If you ever choose to visit, you'll be adopted right enough. The sense of community there is amazing and extends to everyone who visits. It's funny because the boys went capelin fishing today. C apelin are smelt-like fish that come onto the beaches by the millions for a short time every year. You catch with cast nets, pails, your hands, whatever.

Anyway, DH asked why they were going out again given that they probably caught and cleaned a couple hundred just a few days ago. The kids explained to him that they do it for the older people in the village that can't get out and catch them themselves.

Truly stunning.
I won't be posting pictures of Attercliffe or Page Hall near me any time soon! The Peak District, on the other hand ...
