I am flying to a conference in San Diego. I have a block of free time on Thursday that I was planning to use to visit a beach, but the forecast is for rain. Any suggestions for an indoor activity? If the weather is bad enough I'll just stay at the hotel and read, but since the conference is at the hotel, I wouldn't mind getting out.

Birch Aquarium at UCSD.
Natural History Museum or any other at Balboa Park. The railroad museum is cool too.

Also a mall in SD currently has an interactive Jurassic Park experience. Tickets at about $35 or $40.

Liberty Public Market in Liberty Station is an indoor market with food, coffee, and little shops.

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is super interesting, you get to tour a couple of old maritime vessels, to include a submarine. I learned so many fascinating things.
One of my favorite things about San Diego is Balboa Park. The park houses loads of museums s well as the famous San Diego Zoo. It's a delightful place to walk about even if you don't go to any museums.

Also a mall in SD currently has an interactive Jurassic Park experience. Tickets at about $35 or $40. Just a warning, the area where this exhibit is at is prone to flooding during heavy rains. Fashion Valley, just about a mile away gets the worst of it. There have been some good suggestions already. The museums at Balboa Park, Liberty Station has restaurants and there is also a quilt museum and a watercolor museum. Most of the our better shopping malls are open to the elements though, Fashion Valley and UTC.

A light short rain is fine, it when it gets heavy and for an extended period of time, I stay away from the area. That whole area is a flood basin, with Fashion Valley on the opposite end getting the worst of it.

Another vote for Balboa Park or Birch Aquarium depending on where you are staying. There are lots of choices for museums at Balboa Park - there is close parking for the Aerospace, the car Museum and the Science Center. Lots of fun choices though.

epeanymous Forecast tomorrow (Thursday) is pretty much rain all day and windy. I probably wouldn’t even venture out to Balboa Park. Where in San Diego are you staying? I would stay close to wherever your hotel is because traffic will probably be bad.

We were just in San Diego this past weekend. It was our first time back since Covid, so it was extra nice. We normally travel there 1-2 times a year since we're so close (Tucson). We went to Pacific Beach for a late breakfast and while it was cloudy/overcast, it was just nice to watch the waves again. Balboa Park is also one of our favorites. We normally head to the Reuben H. Fleet science center, head over to the koi pond and the botanical building. Unfortunately for us, everything is torn up at the koi pond because they are going to do major renovations to the botanical building and lily pond. We can't wait to see what it looks like next year! We were there on Sunday, so we were able to see the Spreckels Organ in action, they have concerts on Sunday between 2 and 3 pm. Have fun and don't let the weather keep you inside too much. It was rainy all weekend for us, but we still had fun!

The Maritime Museum of San Diego is super interesting, you get to tour a couple of old maritime vessels, to include a submarine. I learned so many fascinating things. I would definitely recommend this on a dry day, but you are moving between 3-4 vessels and there is no way this will be fun in the rain. I would check out the San Diego Central Library and take a docent led tour if possible. The Mingei (folk art, craft and design) is my favorite museum in Balboa Park. It is a nice size for going through in an hour or so and then have lunch at Artifact. On my list is the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. We haven't been since it reopened. ETA We have cousins visiting from AZ and yesterday they enjoyed poking around Liberty Station in the rain. Today they are going to The ComicCon Museum in Balboa Park. It is really good, but definitely geared to superhero/comic fans.
