Don't laugh... but seriously I have no creative talent I can't even draw a stick person that looks like a stick person. But, really want to try art journaling it just looks like fun. Any suggestions... and ideas for easy to use supplies!

I am like you--can't draw at all, and REALLY wanted to art journal but didn't know how. I took some online classes and was hooked. I really learned a LOT and just took it from there. Favorite supplies that I use on almost EVERY piece I create are: *Strathmore Mixed Media journals *Strathmore Newsprint *Liquitex gesso *Stabilo All pencil *Sailor Mini correction pen *Acrylic paints *Uhu Glue Stick *Vintage book paper *Sewing machine because I like to sew on each piece I use a lot more things but these are basics I always use.

You are welcome! And grab some bubble wrap because you can put gesso, paint, etc., on it and stamp circles with it on your pages. Also, lids are good too. Put gesso, paint, etc., on the edge to stamp circles in different sizes depending on the lid size. I have about 15+ lids I use.

What about doing Image Transfers of things you like ..like magazine pics, etc? IT is a great way to add "people" into your work w/o needing the skill to make them look like "people" LOL. My degree is drawing and illustration but I LOVE doing IT. It takes the (self imposed) pressure off of things needing to be asymmetrical and "correct".

I have a stack of old magazines I use for my journals by my desk. I cut out pictures, words, quotes, etc to add in

I confess that I have little patience and a short attention span, so can anyone recommend a simple transfer method? TIA

TIA I just find the pic I want..then put a thin(ish) layer of soft gel medium ( I use Goldens) on the surface ( that I want to transfer to) , put the picture down ( that I am transferring) face down and take an old credit card and gently burnish it for a minute or 2. It will take some trial and error for you to figure out how long you need to burnish it. Gently peel the paper back on one side and check to see the progress of the transfer..if it isn't enough you can burnish for another 45 sec. or so. Peel from one side across. Then gently rub all the " fuzz" ( left over bits of paper and you have an IT. It sounds way more complicated than it is I promise. If it were too time consuming then I would just draw the image LOL. I will see if I can find a video for you.. Ok this video is the first one I ever watched on IT and it is the way I still do them. Image transfer video

You don't have to draw to art journal. You can use stencils, stamps, doodles, blobs, torn paper. It's all good! I can't draw to save my life, but I love art journaling. It's very freeing because it doesn't have to look like anything in particular. Have fun!

Make your art your own!!! My people all look cartoonish and my animals all look alike. Only reason you can tell my horse from a giraffe is the long neck!!! Use texture and rubbings! Stencils! Use straws to blow splatters of paint around. Then when that dries doodle around it with a pretty gold pen! Shiny!!!
