Oh, you so did the right thing! I almost had my debit card stolen at Walgreens drive up a few months ago. I was at the 2nd window where the little box transports your stuff back and forth. I assumed she put my debit card in the bag because that's what they always do. I should have checked first but I didn't! I pulled away and went to a gas station 2 buildings down. As I went to grab my debit card from the bag I realized it wasn't there. I immediately pulled back into Walgreens and the person that had been behind me in line was just about to pull away from the drive up. I kind of blocked her in and walked up and said, "Did there happen to be a debit card in the box when you pulled up?" (and I was honestly thinking that if there had been a card she had told the Walgreens employee and I would just get it from them inside). She grabbed my debit card OUT OF HER PURSE and said, "I was just about to call you to tell you I found it." Um, I didn't know this woman and my phone number is not ON my debit card. That chick was going to steal my debit card!!!!! I'm thankful that I realized it was missing as quickly as I did. And I learned my lesson to ALWAYS check the bag for my card before I pull away. Previously, my card is always placed in the bag with the prescription but I shouldn't assume every clerk will do that.

I accidentally left mine in an ATM last month and when I returned for it, it was gone. I was hoping whomever found it would do the same thing you did, but I also cancelled it immediately and received a new one in about a week . When that happened to me, the bank told me that the ATM sucks them back in after a certain amount of time I used to work at a bank, and there's a little box inside that collects them. Pretty much every time we balanced the atm there would be at least 5 cards in there, so it happens a lot more often than you'd think. If you call the bank right away, they'll hold it for you and return it to you if you can verify ID. I found a card on the ground at the local pizza place recently. I didn't think to call the bank - I ended up taking it inside to the counter figuring the person that lost it would retrace their steps and eventually end up there. I'll have to keep that in mind if it ever happens again.

When I left my card at Olive Garden, the server gave it to the manager who locked it up in the safe. I called about it later in the day to see if they had it and I was able to go pick it up after work. So if I found it in a place where the person was likely to come back for it, like in a store or business, I would give it to the manager.
However, if you have no way of knowing who the person is I would do the same thing - call the bank and cut it up.

People forget the money so often. It never makes sense to me why those machines are programmed like that.

you did the right thing. I found a cell phone at Sams, took it to the service desk. Afterwards I wondered if I did the right thing. I could have tried to contact the owner myself probably. Was a little worried that the young worker behind the Sams counter just pocketed it.

I lost my debit card once and the person that found it went on a shopping spree that night. I didn't realize until morning because I check my accounts daily, and I had close to $700 missing in one account. The person went to Walmart and gas stations.
I wish there were more people like you. I got the money back, but to think that there are people in the world that could do this...I was just so angry.

I took it out and gave it a good shove through the locked doors of the branch so it landed on the middle of the floor, well beyond the doors. It was still at the "Would you like another transaction?" screen too.

I would have first check see if the person was on facebook. I am normally really good about finding people with little to no information. If not I would have called the bank.
