I know a million questions have been asked about the canon selphy before... BUT....
I'm getting a gift card from work that would allow me to get one. My dilemma is the cost of having it. Cartridges in Canada are $45+ so it not exactly cost effective especially considering that I print everything at Costco. I have two printers that I can use to print photos if the need should arise but I'm not terribly thrilled with the quality of either and everything I read about the Selphy is that the prints are amazing. I don't need the portability of it but with all of the reviews I'm thinking I may "want" one. What do you think?

Have you checked Costco for ink and paper packs? I recently heard that they were quite inexpensive there -- around $28 for the 108 pack, I think.
I have a Selphy. I love it. Yes, the prints are more expensive (I buy my paper and toner in the US, so it works out to about 35 cents per print) but for me, it is worth it. I don't use it for all of my pictures, but it is great for when I want to do a page RIGHT NOW and I don't have pictures printed for it yet. Usually I send away to Shutterfly but since I don't preplan pages, I usually order several sizes/proportions (4x6, 3x4, 4x4, colour, black and white) so I can have several options when I'm ready to scrap. With my Selphy, I print exactly what I want to use, and use it. No more wasted photos or leftovers I have to find a home for.

I have one & am really happy with it. Especially convenient to print right from my phone.

I have a question. I would love to print my pictures at home. I use Persnickity Prints because I like the different size options they have to offer. I like the wallet size (2 1/2 x 3 1/2) or the 3x4. Can I do this with the Selfie?

I've never seen the ink/paper at Costco but I'll look again when I'm there next time... Canadian stores can be very different from the ones in the US, but we are close enough to the border and are heading down for a shopping trip to Buffalo over the holidays-no Costco in Buffalo but maybe another store where I could pick up some for a little less. Honestly I don't think 35 cents per print is bad but I think it would be more than that for me. I'm finding that lately I'm using odd sized photos and don't want to wait until the weekend to be able to pick them up from Costco. I don't generally print any photos until I'm ready to scrap them but having the ability to print a decent photo immediatelynis kind of appealing!

Can I do this with the Selfie? There is only one paper size. I use the PicStitch app on my phone and will often put 2 3x4s on one 4x6 or 4 2x3s on one picture and print it, then cut it out

The selphy has a setting that allows you to print 2, 4 or 6 photos on a 4 x 6. I have been using the project life app and making collages with my phone pics. I print those directly from the app.

I just looked in our Costco - MN - and no Selphy paper & ink sets! I do have a connection over at Best Buy that will purchase them for me with her discount, though. She said she gets a pretty decent discount.

Ok another question... I understand that the convenience is great but tell me about the quality of the prints. A lot of the things I've read says that it beats local print shops like Costco and Walmart, but I'm not a big fan of glossy prints and prefer matte. Looks like the only paper available for the Selphy is glossy. So what do you think about the prints?

I hate gloss prints, hate prints from the instant kiosks at places like the grocery store and Walmart, and I LOOOOOOVE the quality of my Selphy prints. I don't think they are glossy like those cheap looking glossy prints. There is a bit of shine, but the quality is fantastic. I was really hesitant to buy my Selphy, because most instant or at-home printers look so cheap to me, but I am thrilled with Selphy prints.

The paper is a little thicker than most at home prints- at least that's my impression. I'm not near my Selphy to compare.
It's not something one really "needs" if they have a system for ordering prints. But I've loved mine for printing "moments" , photos off my phone that might be forgotten when I do a big order.
ira also an easy way to give hard copies to guests, like grandparents, that want a print of event.
Most unexpected uses: I've printed phone photos to explain something to a workman, given to tailor about alterations, and even made multiple copies of instructions for a group of drivers. Sure there are more cost effective ways to do those things but it was very convenient at the time.
I have a medium size laptop camera backpack, but don't have many lenses. I have packed it in this bag for trips.
Can you tell I love my Selphy? I've given two as gifts.

Thank you for all your "enabling" responses! Got my gift card yesterday and hurried over to the store to make the purchase. Apparently I'm not the only one wanting one of these... They're on sale and the store had none left! BUT luckily there are more at the warehouse being shipped to the store so I was able to prepay to get the sale price! Was supposed to pick it up tomorrow but i just got a call that it's in today! Yippee.

I know you have to use "special" paper with this printer but is it possible to use anything else, like canvass paper cut to the same size? Are there any tricks people have come up with for doing this?

Are there any tricks people have come up with for doing this? My understanding is the paper and ink are part of the "system" allowing the pics to develop. (Im sure those are not technically correct terms! ) so I've never gambled and tried anything else. The paper loads separately from ink cartridge, so maybe it is possible. Next time there's a $15 printer with paper supply deal it might be worth it to experiment. I love printing on Kraft.

i wouldn't dare risk trying anything other than the recommended film. i do think it would ruin the printer - canon is pretty specific about that in the operating manual if i remember correctly. but that's just me - i'm very conservative about things like this because i have no "fix -it" ability!!

Can I do this with the Selfie? I use a free program called Photosheet to modify the sizes of the pictures. Problem with using the Selphy program is you can get wallet sizes, but it will print two/four of the same picture. With Photosheet you can add different pictures, so it saves a lot on paper. It also centers better on the page than the Selphy program. I think the photo quality is superb. I've always been very happy with it. The pics are glossy, not matte, if that's an issue. But they are water resistant. It it uses a technology called dye sublimation, so it's not like a standard photo printer that uses inkjet ink. So you have to use the proprietary paper that comes with it. I doubt you would be able to substitute as the other photo paper is not meant for this technique. Kodak has a dye sublimation printer also but the paper is not interchangeable( slightly different size).
