I've been thinking about this too as I'm setting up my new craft space. I ordered some of the clear containers in the Home Edit line from Walmart and they come today. I too have a bunch of the Alex drawers from Ikea and saw another crafter use them to organize her Alex drawers in this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rsgYMqRHgMIn my new space I repurposed 2 of the Ikea Havsta cabinets we used as a makeshift pantry in Seattle. I love them way more than I was expecting and 12x12 albums fit in the bottom of the cabinets. I like that they hide the clutter. Before I used 2 of the Kallax units but they were always messy and after moving them several times, they were in bad shape so I wanted to try something new. Luckily we had the Havstas, so I didn't have to spend extra $. I have room so I think I'm going to grab one more. I plan to get the one with the glass doors on top so I can display some pretty things. Inside the upper cabinets I've used some of the skinny bins from the container store that are large enough to hold 12x12 papers and I have those by manufacturer and just stack them length-wise. www.ikea.com/us/en/p/havsta-storage-combination-w-glass-doors-white-s29265981/www.containerstore.com/s/storage/plastic-bins-baskets/multi_purpose-bins/12d?p=0&ps=62&productId=10022942

Thanks for the inspiration! Unfiled from my binder an ephemera set I'm unlikely to use, pulled out a couple of others from the closet, and packed them up for my colleague. Found another set that had many elements that I might use. Reorganized the binder and now it looks much better!

Okay, so I started looking at options online and in store. I did pick up some drawer inserts from Ikea. Not sure if they are small enough, but they are super cheap and I can pass them off to my youngest daughter for her drawers if I don't want/like them. I ordered a plastic jewelry tray, with lid, from Amazon for smaller embellishments. I wanted the you tube in an earlier comment (maybe Legal Lady?). It got me thinking.
I found (but did not purchase) a pullout storage system at Homegoods. Looked interesting, but I don't want to put more stuff on my table/counter space just yet. It was also $40 and I wasn't into committing that much to a maybe. iDesign stuff = has gotten expensive. There were a few knock offs I saved on my Amazon account that were a little cheaper. I also checked out the Target stuff, but wasn't ready to purchase those. They ranged in price from $5 - $13 each. some of the odd (but more useable sizes) were kind of pricey.
I'm hoping to sort some of my product out and come up with themes/groups to see how much space i will need.

TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Home Goods & Home Sense all have fridge bins similar to the iDesign ones for a lot less.

i find ephemera hard to organize and store. should it be by manufacturer or theme? color or type? i have most of my ephemera in a 60-drawer card catalog. the xmas, halloween, and travel related stuff are in rubbermaid stacking snapware containers. I was going to post a question like this: How do you store ephemera and embellishments - by manufacturer or by type? Right now I do not have a consistent method. Sometimes I keep the ephemera and other embellishments with the matching patterned paper, sometimes I store it by theme -- for example with other Christmas embellishments. But I'm trying to improve the time I spend creating a layout and wonder if always putting the embellishments with the manufacture's line would help.

Update - for now I’ve started sorting into themes and shapes. Christmas, travel, summer - a few themes I’m using for now. Mostly shapes otherwise - but the hardest part is deciding what to do with all the words - strips, cut outs etc. I’m not sure I love it but for now it’s getting things out of packages.
Labels are sorted by colors (neutrals/black, blue/green, red/pink/purple, yellow/orange.) label stickers are in their one bins (not cutting those apart) Tags in another tray, tabs separated as well. Still have a long way to go, but at least I can see part of my workspace again!

My ephemera is sorted by theme in binders. I use these binder pockets and add a sticker label to the front of it. I like being able to flip through things quickly. I used to have page protectors, but things would sometimes fall out when moving the binder. I don't know if I subconsciously remembered and was inspired by this or not, but I've landed someplace very similar. My letter-size binder and page protectors/photo pocket/card pocket/coin pocket sheets was a PITA. This sometimes fell out when moving it as sarahsprettypapers noted or even just flipping through it. Other things were difficult to get in and out of the pockets. I ended up not wanting to deal with any of. I am a card maker with relatively small ephemera. I landed on using a 2" ring mini/junior size (5.5 x 8.5) binder with a bunch of 3 ring zipper pencil pouches to sort things into.
