Hi,
Was wondering what brands of cutting mats you buy for your Silhouette Cameo machine (& from what site?). I have the original Cameo. Silhouette cutting mats are made in Japan.
I've only used the Silhouette brand cutting mats. Some acquaintances have used Cricut cutting mats because it's less expensive since you'd get 2 per pkg. And they said the mat is slightly thicker and you'd have to realign your paper to match the Cameo's mat.
Last year I purchased Hobby Lobby's Paper Studio 12" x 12" standard grip adhesive cutting mats (2 per pkg). normally, $14.99 on sale for $6.99/pkg.
Decided to wash my Cameo mat and try out the Paper Studio version. I applied a bath towel to lessen the sticky surface. The Paper Studio mat loaded into the Cameo fine & accepted cuts w/o issues.
The rather STRONG odor was lst noticeable when I took it out of the cellophane packaging. The smell burned my eyes & nose. Perhaps eventually the odor will dissipate but I decided to put it away. The mats were made in China.
I'm guessing it's the type of adhesive finish that was applied to the Paper Studio cutting mats.
I've noticed some double stick tapes also have a strong chemical odor and can take awhile for the strong odor to disappear..ie, Rubber Stamp Concepts Super Adhesive Tape (made in USA). The adhesion is fine, it's the initial STRONG chemical smell when the package is opened. I've used other brands in the past w/o issues..ie, Sookwang, & Scotch, etc.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions on alternative cutting mats for the Cameo.

I have been using the Nicapa brand that I purchase on Amazon Their grid is the same as the original silhouette mats, come 3 in a pack for something like $18 (CAN) and I’ve never noticed an odour.

Me too. They are reasonably priced and not too sticky. I thought the Hobby Lobby ones were also too sticky.

I use Nicapa mats, too. On Prime days and Black Friday they have awesome deals on them. That’s when I stock up.

Nicapa for me as well and I also use Cricut mats with my Silhouette if I can't get Nicapa. Joanns always has Circuit mats on sale so I will grab those in a pinch.

Another Nicapa user here. Hi hi hi!!!! We've missed you! Aw, thanks! I keep checking the original sticky thread for the virual crops but it hasn't been updated since April of last year. LOL I don't come here often enough to see the last minute posts about the room being open until it's too late. Oh, well. I didn't do paper crafts at all last year but this year I've put sewing on hold and have dived right in to paper again. It's nice to be missed.

Hi, thanks for all your replies & suggestions.
Afterwards, I tried out a set of cutting mats I purchased from Tuesday Morning a few years ago. They were produced by American Crafts (made in China), 12" x12", standard grip. I thought I had lessen the stickiness by applying a bath towel on it's surface. There was no strong chemical odor.
My gosh, the stick was so strong I could barely remove the paper from the cutting mat even though I pulled the mat away from the stuck on paper. The mat removed the bottom ply of my cut paper. I used my scrapper to try & remove residue paper scraps, pieces were "glued" on. I soaked the new cutting mat in dish washing detergent and allowed it to air dry.
Today, I tried that mat again..and again used the bath towel to lessen the stickiness. Again, the mat was too sticky and wouldn't release the paper and ended up ruining the cut paper. Re washed the cutting mat and is air drying now and will be put away.
I recall in the past, my Cricut mats also had that issue being too sticky and unable to release cut paper (even though I used towels to lessen the stickiness). Do you have some suggestions for mats that are too sticky?
Nicapa mats are the way to go and I plan to purchase them soon.

Do you have some suggestions for mats that are too sticky? Nicapa mats are the way to go and I plan to purchase them soon. Use the towel several times once your mat has dried. Washing the mat is only removing the paper residue, not the sticky. So you are basically starting over each time you wash the mat. I usually use a towel a few times, then test a mat with my hand. It's quickly apparent if it's too sticky that way, and I don't ruin my cuts. A sticky mat has a fine line between being too sticky and not sticky enough.
