DS is on a Shakespeare kick and has requested a couple of books to read for Christmas. What are your favourite tragedies?

Julius Caesar and Hamlet. The Tempest isn't quite tragedy but not quite fully a comedy either. It's a lighter than his standard tragedies without quite so much of the slapstick of the comedies. It's a good middle ground.

I think you should be able to find an anthology of tragedies. Check amazon.

I love the comedy of "Much Ado About Nothing" the most but if I had to pick tragedies I'd go with the standard "Romeo and Juliet" and "Hamlet"

I think one of those entire collections would be a wonderful gift and a good resource as he grows. My favorite tragedies are "MacBeth" and "Romeo and Juliet"

Definitely get an entire collection. One man's favorite is another man's cure to insomnia.

Definitely get an entire collection. One man's favorite is another man's cure to insomnia. Agreed. Also, there's a novelization of MacBeth available. I've started it and it seems quite good. I also saw that there's a novelization of Hamlet by the same people on Audible. The MacBeth was originally Audible-only, then it was released in a Kindle edition. I'm not sure if it's in paper, but it probably is. I'm also not sure if the Hamlet is available in print, but it's worth checking out.

It might be fun to get on of the tragedies and a modern interpretation. Such as hamlet and The Dead Father's Club or Lear and A Thousand Acres. Or watch the movie Ran which has elements of Lear.
I have never cared for Romeo and Juliet. Richard the Third while technically a history is a great read.
