I posted the other day about fabric softeners. On that thread, lots of people mentioned that you aren’t supposed to use any with towels. I did not know this and usually use extra. My towels are also not very absorbent due to this fact. I was looking up solutions and saw laundry stripping, which I have never done. Is this something you have tried?

I stripped bedding and ds22 t-shirts. Both turned out well. I had recently bought new towels, and I don't use fabric softener on them, so I didn't strip them.

No, there is no need to do this. The washer has a soak setting and the combo of washing soda and borax and detergent is more crap than I use to wash clothes in the first place. Remember when making your own detergent was a thing- borax ,washing soda and fels naphtha. After a while, people realized that their clothes werent getting clean using it.

Honestly I'd just buy new towels and start again with no fabric softener. Soaking towels and then having to wring them out somehow to transfer them to the washing machine just sounds like too much mess and effort to me.

I do it periodically with my workout wear in an attempt to remove any lingering smells. I don't really know if it works, but it makes me feel better.

I have never done laundry stripping in my life. I live in an area with really soft water and don’t use fabric softener, so I’ve never felt a need for it. Also, it’s far more work than I ever want to do. 😄

I've never done it. In Belgium, our water was really hard even after having a water softener installed. Because there was still residue from the pipes, I used vinegar in every wash load. I still have the same towels and they seem quite absorbent. They are probably 5 years old or so.

I did it in 2020 during the boredom of lockdown and was shocked by the results and I don’t even use fabric softener.

I saw a method where you can do it in your top loader washing machine. No way would I attempt to do it in a bathtub and wring them out myself. I’m lazy 😜

I tried it on towels and similar stuff, out of curiousity, and it didn't seem like it really made a difference.
I have done it on workout clothes or items that have gotten that stinky, musty smell that happens on occasion, and it does seem to help with that.

Can you use your washing machine to soak?
I know some of the HE machines will not allow a long soak, and are difficult to get filled with really hot water to start with.
But if you have the type of washing machine that will allow you to soak longer than 15-20 minutes without draining - that is the easiest!

I’ve tried it about 6 months ago with the throw blanket I use on the couch. Nothing much happened. I don’t use fabric softener so maybe that’s why.

I’d never heard of laundry stripping until I read about it here at 2 Peas. I’ve never done it. I don’t use fabric softener either.

I stopped using fabric softener all together probably 25-30 years ago, but I have done a modified stripping with white vinegar and baking soda after we got our front loading washer and the towels started getting stinky. It definitely helped with that, and ever since that now I leave all the doors open to totally dry out between wash days and occasionally use some vinegar with very stinky loads of laundry.

I always wipe out my washer, the door and gasket after using it for a day.

I’ve not done this, but we switched to detergent sheets with less crap in them. The first few washes I wasn’t sure as the clothes didn’t seem to be getting that clean. But now they’re soft and clean-smelling every time. I’m convinced there was a lot of old detergent in there that needed to come out.
