Have you been to a McDonalds with the new lids? They are testing out a new lid that you sip through. Right now, the one that I go to is still giving out straws to put through it. They are trying to do their part and reduce plastic waste. Since I usually go to the drive-thru I know that I want a straw. Something nice about driving and being able to easily take a sip of a drink. What are your thoughts?

We’ve experienced this at McD’s in other countries. The lids are still plastic and they’re bigger/thicker than the old lids, so I don’t know how much plastic is really being saved.

I never go to McDonald's so I have no idea about their cups....but if you like a straw, and if a straw will fit through the opening of the new cups, you could just keep some in your car. Either throwaway ones or reusable ones. I keep those thicker silicone ones in my glove compartment (along with forks, spoons, and napkins, lol) because you never know...

I doubt anything is being saved, when the problem isn't just straws, but it's something easy for most people to grasp and try to change while not really changing much.

I want a straw. I've finally broken my habit of going through McDonald's for breakfast and a Diet Coke so it's been a while. If I did go through for just a Diet Coke, I'd be annoyed not to have a straw. If I did it regularly I'd have to keep one in the car.

It isn't the amount of plastic per say. It is the type of plastic. Straws were never made to be recycled.
My Starbucks and another fast food place give out biodegradable straws.
The lids are made of recyclable materias and then the straws biodegrade so they don't take up landfill space or go to the ocean to love forever.
Unless I get a blended drink, I like the sippy cup like lids.
I also have a collection of reusable straws I can use.

Yes, we have them where I live. I will sheepishly admit with weird hockey practice times/non-driving age teens, sometimes we hit up McDs because it is open later and most convenient to our house.
I think they started this month sometime. I like straws, but these are pretty well-designed, and I didn't mind it the one time I got a drink. There is a sign that says you can ask for a straw.
ETA: Design is raised, so it isn't like a coffee cup that is more flat or slightly raised. I feel like its ergonomically a decent hybrid. Hard to explain, but it was better than any other non-straw drink I have had like that.

Fucking finally, I wish Dunkin would too. I’m an adult I can drink a beverage without a straw but not thru the crossed slits in the middle of the lid. A paper straw doesn’t even hold together for the duration of the beverage so with the hole in the middle I can’t drink it without removing the lid. Starbucks had no issue switching, wawa got it together, it’s about time everyone got on board. IF you want a straw with the new lids it should still fit. But the paper straws suck. I had no issue with the waxy paper cups they used to have & have no issue if they all go back but I suspect the plastic was cheaper. Hey, maybe it’ll all be “food” one day…. www.mlive.com/news/2022/10/michigan-tech-researchers-are-turning-plastic-waste-into-food-for-the-us-military.html?outputType=amp^ ( I can’t wrap my head around this concept )

I’ve gotten these cups. They have a sign in the drive through that says straws available on request but they have always given me a straw. I did go to a different location while traveling and they didn’t have any self-service area at all. It was annoying. They didn’t give the straw, no way to get ketchup or soda unless you ask, etc.
I personally drink from a straw all the time unless I’m using my Owala water bottle. I did get one of the strapless cup at a concession stand last weekend and it was ok, but I’m used to a straw.

My selfish side wants the McDonald's Styrofoam cups back and with a straw.. that is what I like. The cup 'keeps' the drink fresh way longer.. almost all day. The clear cups does not. At all.
But I understand the need for better packaging. If I do get a drink there, I will pour it into my stainless steel cup and use a reusable straw. The Styrofoam cups that other places still use, I will save a few of them for refills. Some places give you a discount for reusing. Like Quick Trip.
Oh back to the lid thing.. sorry!! I don't mind the Starbucks ones so I probably be okay with the McDonald ones... I haven't seen them yet.

Even if it’s not a savings of plastic overall, perhaps it’s easier to recycle a thicker lid and keep it out of a landfill, the environment or the ocean compared to a straw. Plastic straws are also notoriously bad for wildlife.

I want to say the drink stayed colder longer in the waxy paper cup but that might be a revised memory on my part.

Our McDonalds has the waxy paper cups. I haven’t been in while, so not sure about the new lids.

I only get diet cokes there and my area has not switched yet. I wish they would because I can hardly get the straw through the starry thing on top.

I love their clear cups now and if they had a good lid like a Starbucks sip lid I'd like that. I really don't like straws, and often take the lid off to drink right out of the cup.
As long as the Coke and Sprite never change the way they taste! Oh man - nothing hits like a McD's Coke on a hot day!
I only order small size. I do not want a quart of pop! Sometimes it's really hard to get them to give me a small. I don't want a large!

We used to use them to make fire starters with dryer lint & babybel cheese wax to light the woodstoves.

All of our McDonald's have the new lids and I hate them. I think they know that people don't like them because they are still handing out straws with each drink LOL
I don't want to drink my Diet Coke through the equivalent of a sippy cup.

Hop2 Messed up the quote, I always struggle with those. Tried to fix it, made it worse so deleted it. Anyway ask for the lid they use on a cold brew/cold foam. It is like a sip lid and they don't give straw, at least at my store, I always have to get a straw because I find it easier to drink in car plus I stir with it.

Seattle has been no plastic straws for a number of years now. Paper straws are given by request. Paper straws have gotten markedly better since the no plastic straws ban went into effect, and i can easily get through my Diet Coke or iced latte without them fraying or collapsed. Like everything else, we will adjust, promise 😉
