I have to use a straw with cold drinks because of trigeminal neuralgia. (Weirdly, I can drink out of a can OK, it just when drinking out of a cup. And warm drinks are fine for me.) I hate that I have to do that, particularly since I was pretty well trained to not use them any more before I developed this. I've not found paper straws I can tolerate, and reusable ones also have set off the TN before if they're not just the right material.
BUT, if I was still the person I was a year and a half ago, I would say this was a great thing. I guess I have an awareness now that there are always other sides to every story. I hope that we phase more and more towards eliminating straws except where needed - like, not ban them 100%, but 90%. I think there are a lot of things like that where we can do better and should where we can.

I love a McDonald’s Diet Coke! I have reusable straws in my car and always try to say “I don’t need a straw” before they start handing my drink through the window. It confuses some of the workers, like they don’t know how to grab the straw back and pass only the drink. Muscle memory, I guess.
Does the new lid have the x in case you want to use your own straw?

I always keep the silicone straws in my car so I would still use a straw. Ever since I got a cracked tooth "fixed" and got a crown, my tooth is even more sensitive to cold. So I can only drink out of a straw for all my beverages.

I don’t drink without a straw 🤷🏻♀️
I buy them by the thousand and keep a healthy stash in my car, so city bans aren’t going to stop me 🤣

I usually don't purchase a drink, because I always have a bottle of water with me. I haven't had soda since 2010. I hate paper straws! I hate super skinny straws. I have a package of straws in my glovebox. I prefer jumbo straws. I rarely go to McDonald, because I have no self control when it comes to the caramel sundae and the hot fudge sundae. One of each please!

Yes, we have them where I live. I will sheepishly admit with weird hockey practice times/non-driving age teens, sometimes we hit up McDs because it is open later and most convenient to our house. That’s the only reason I even go through the McDonald’s drive-through. (DGS has his learner’s permit, so I usually make him do the drive-through. I hate drive-throughs). On the day my grandson‘s dad is the designated driver to drive him an hour and a half away to his hockey practice, Dad drives from his work, parks in a parking lot adjacent to a McDonald’s for pick up.(It’s near the interstate). We can grab B something to eat, and he can hop in his dad’s car and they can be on their way. There’s so little time between the time I pick him up from school, get him home to change his clothes and get him to the parent that’s driving, sometimes fast food is the only option. I don’t eat McDonald’s, but last week when we did the drive-through and B got a drink, it was still the standard lid and a straw set up. Personally, I really hate paper straws, it might be a sensory thing. I go to a restaurant supply place that’s open to the public and buy a big huge box of jumbo plastic straws. I drink all of my drinks at home in an insulated tumbler with a lid and a plastic straw. I really need to go pick up a big supply of the plastic straws in case they ban them around here. I don’t think reusable straws get clean. In fact they kind of gross me out.

I'm going to need to pick up a handful of straws next time I go there (maybe 2-3 times a year!) But there's something about a McDonald's diet Coke that I love. I've heard different theories about why it's different than at other fast food places. --proprietary syrup, the syrup is kept cold, and the size of the straw. I'm not sure what it is, but that first hit is heaven!

I guess I need to remember to keep straws in my car. I really hate the idea of them removing them completely. They are sometimes needed for people with disabilities.

I love straws, I rarely drink without a straw. I'll hit up the McDonald's drive thru a couple times a month so this would be annoying to me. You always hear that the reason their soda tastes better is because their straw is bigger so I would be curious to test that theory out with their new cup.

I carry a collapsable stainless steel straw. It is in a little case, along with a cleaner and is about the size of a pack of gum. I've carried it for a few years now and I refuse straws in restaurants and the rare time I go to a fast food place. It just makes me feel better.

If Starbucks can, McDs can. And should.

The problem with these cups is that you end up shaking the ice every time you go for a sip. Not to mention you make the soda flat faster with all the movement. So if you’re like me and a Diet Coke with lots of ice gives you life this idea sucks. I hope theres still a hole for a straw because I wouldn’t mind using a metal one.

I mean, I see this going exactly the way it did for Starbucks - they switch the lid. You still get a straw. The straw fits in the hole in the new lid. And the only thing that changed is that now MORE plastic is wasted because the lid is thicker and bigger.

But not everyone will ask for a straw, as many have mentioned they already bring their own. 🤷🏻♀️ We almost never buy drinks when we go to McD’s and we never go to Starbucks so for my family it would be a non-issue. We usually have water in the car that we brought along from home.

We usually have water in the car that we brought along from home. This exactly. We're not coffee drinkers and we almost never order fast food, so this won't impact us. We always travel with water. A 2020 study showed that in the US there are an estimated 222 million straws on roads, in parks, in water ways etc. kab.org/litter-study/The Starbucks plan might not be perfect, a biodegradable option would be preferable, but Starbucks reduced up to an estimated 1 billion straws per year. The McDonalds plan may not be perfect either, but it's a step in the right direction. And here's why reducing the number of straws matters greenssteel.com/blogs/news/why-are-plastic-straws-so-bad-for-sea-turtles

When we were in St Lucia this past fall, the resort had paper straws, but they were of good quality- didnt taste like paper and didnt get soft in the drink.

If I need straw for milkshake like drink I have non disposable option with me. For my family it would make a difference. Just because you carry a million straws around doesn't mean everyone does. Some people will take straws. Some won't. Hard to say if more will or won't. If more won't then it will be a good thing.
