What the heck is a Mushy Pea?

Mushy peas is a British dish. We have quite a few peas from the UK, plus it’s a fun play on 2Peas. I doubt insult was intended.

What does that have to do with mushy peas? I mean other than mushy peas being a side dish to the pie you linked.
Savory pies are a thing here too.

I have heard of mushy peas over the years but never actually googled them until this thread. lol. I've always assumed, with my American brain, that they were just regular peas ("regular" meaning the green rounds ones that most of us here buy frozen because it's rare to find fresh peas in city grocery stores) but in a can so they were softer. And I figured I wouldn't like them because although I prefer canned green beans (softer than fresh or frozen) I do not like soft peas. I actually prefer my peas to be half raw. hahaha

So I've just googled and now I've learned that it's more like split peas! At least in looks and consistency. Now I'd love to make them except several recipes that I looked up said there is no substitute for the marrowfat peas, and I'm guessing that's not something that's in my regular grocery store. Amazon maybe? off to check.

Yep. It’s divine, but it has to be proper chip shop gravy. 

could you buy marrow bones and scrape out the innerds? we used to buy them for our dog or for soup.

This was my take as well. No idea why mushy pea as a one off title would have any relation to the food.

Because mushy = lovely dovey = Valentine’s Day = the date 2/14 = the post number. And to a Brit pea, if you think of the word mushy, the word peas isn’t usually far behind.

I kinda remember being a mushy pea for a day.. something like that.. I got a great laugh out of it. My stepmum is English so I was familiar with the term.

I still don't understand why the title would relate to the food. I understand what mushy peas are. I understand why certain peas think of mushy peas when they hear mushy. I don't understand why anyone would think the food has any connection to the meaning behind the title. You explain exactly what I thought. 214 Valentine's Day. Mushy means lovey. Why would you think that the title mushy pea relates to the food?
