So, I was just reading that (oh so shockingly) they are getting concerned about the power grid as the second wave moves in to the Hill Country tonight. There are areas forecast to get up to a solid inch of ice, which is going to pull down some lines for sure.
Make sure you keep things charged as much as possible and be as prepared as you can!

So how's everything looking this morning for everyone?
It's bad here. I'd say we've had probably a good third to half inch of ice. We've lost lots of major limbs (and we're really good about keeping things trimmed, etc. and even get a pro arborist out at least once every 2 years). Our neighbors had a medium sized oak tree come visit our house...permanently...i.e. it's completely gone, went through our (new) fence and onto our house and our (new) roof. We don't think it damaged the roof, though, from what we can see - it was mostly just the top bits that actually hit our roof. It also wiped out our two TX mountain laurels. We lost major limbs on one of our ancient live oaks, and significant damage to our bigtooth maple and our redbud. Still more ice coming in, too... :/
But we still have power! It's flickered a few times, but I'm hopeful that since we have underground lines in our neighborhood and for much of our power company that we'll be OK. Numbers are definitely going up, though.

As long as I don’t lose power, ha we always used to refer to it as - electricity. I’m from Michigan. My power lines are old and above ground. Last time when the power grid went out, I was without power for days. And my WiFi was out for 9 days. Keeping it all charged and hoping for the best. Thanks for the thread. 😊

A home in Farmers Branch has a tree carving--I would guess your DH created it.

He may have plenty to work with after this storm, too! :/

Amarillo is still clear and just cold. I think we will hit 30 today though, so it's warming up. Supposed to be in the 60s this weekend so I am excited for the weekend!

We keep hearing the crashing sounds of more and more branches getting lost. My DH and the kids went on a walk...we have streets blocked by fallen and bent over trees, and it's pretty much carnage throughout the neighborhood, school, and park. The pictures they are showing basically look like an ice hurricane came through.
BUT I STILL HAVE POWER! The above ground lines are a mess, though, and the workers trying to fix them are having problems. First there's the obvious that the equipment is all frozen and it's hard to get there and many streets are blocked, but again, there's the ice hurricane issue. And it's just flat out cold to be doing this work, and it's still raining/sleeting/snowing on them. I mean, at least it's around 30 and not super windy...?

Oh no RosieKat I’m so sorry. I hate to see more tree damage (and house and fence) after there was so much damage in 2022.

Power went out briefly here overnight and I had to reset my router. I'm not sure my roses will survive as they were covered in ice but I got through it generally unscathed!

RosieKat how is your power this morning? My son made a Target run yesterday and helped pull a large tree off the road with his truck on his way back. His power has been steady until this point.

Your roses may be ok since it was only a few days of cold/ice. We routinely get ice on our roses and they usually come back just fine, assuming they weren't already blooming. Make sure they get a good fertilizer when it starts to get warm.

Well Amarillo is finished with the cold for now. High today is going to 51 and 70 by Sunday. My landscaper stopped by today and reset the sprinkler system on my flower beds to start watering now that it wont freeze. We probably have one more freezing spell but given the wonky weather, we might be done already.

We’re finished with the cold but haven’t had power since 9 last night. And mom’s house (Austin) has been out for well over 24 hours, is at 49* but they can’t go to a hotel because so many branches are blocking their car in the driveway.

My cousins who are in the Taylor area have been without power since yesterday at 4:30 am. Between the ice on the roads and all the downed trees and limbs they've been unable to get out. My sister is near Kyle and never lost power, but has had a lot of ice and trees/limbs down as well. Here in Houston we missed the ice/sleet, but it is still 41 (feels like 35). Hopefully the sun and warmer temps they are promising show up tomorrow.

We broke out of jail and went out to grab lunch today. The first place we went was still closed. The parking lot was still icy, but mostly slush.
Then, we went to one of our favorite taco places and they were open. There were a couple of slick spots in the parking lot, but the sidewalks weren’t bad. We were going to get coffee at the Starbucks inside Kroger in that same shopping center, but it was closed, too! I was shocked because Kroger was open. My only thought is we have had some delays in deliveries at our house, so maybe they were out of some things and had to close until they get a delivery? I’m just speculating, but I was bummed. Even though we rarely get Starbucks, I was craving a hot chai because I was cold!
Some local school districts around here will still be closed tomorrow because the temps will be below freezing, and it’s been raining off and on all day, so that will refreeze overnight.

4th snow day tomorrow for most districts in the NE Dallas suburbs. I’m sure most districts in DFW will be closed tomorrow. My kids are over it at this point. They’ve had to move the regional swim meet to next week and my daughters are freaking out that they might cancel winter formal on Saturday night. But we are safe and warm so I’m grateful.

I’m 30 miles south of Waco and we’re finally thawing out. We were lucky and never lost power but my mom did at her house today and many in this area still without. A lot of tree limbs down all over. We lost a couple. My nephew in Austin lost a lot. My mom lost some big branches and one took out her deck. The worst is behind us now. Just rain but supposed to get down to 29 overnight so the morning might be a little tricky but warming up after that. Several school districts have already canceled again tomorrow mostly because of the power outages.
We’re leaving Saturday for a Caribbean cruise. Ready for warmth and sunshine!

RosieKat how is your power this morning? We ended up losing power for a bit over 24 hours, Wednesday evening into late late Thursday night. In that length of time, it dropped to 56 in our house! Trees just got worse and worse, too. We’re finished with the cold but haven’t had power since 9 last night. And mom’s house (Austin) has been out for well over 24 hours, is at 49* but they can’t go to a hotel because so many branches are blocking their car in the driveway. A ton of places don't have power anyway. We did venture out to try to find some food last night, since we didn't have power and I just didn't have the oomph to try to cook anything. We had to venture around our whole area to find anything open - even our HEB was closed! (And it was due to power outage, not the weather.) So, so many roads were all but shut from fallen trees and branches. Honestly, the tree damage looks like a hurricane, it is just dreadful. After seeing other places, I am glad that we maintain our trees. I was thinking that it hadn't helped at all, but seeing places where I've observed they need tree maintenance before now, I can see that the maintenance did, in fact, help. But it's just sad to see. Roads are all thawed now except for some icy bits here and there, but honestly, we're not venturing out again for a couple days if we can help it. There will be limbs continuing to fall, and there's just too much mess out, so it's not truly that safe out. I mean, it's safe enough if you have to go out, but better to stay off the roads if you can. Now to go finish cleaning out the fridge. Of course I'd just done a big shopping trip. By the time I realized how quickly it warmed up in the fridge, there was a lot of stuff I didn't trust any more. I did take the more reliable stuff and put it outside, since at least those temps were pretty much in the ideal fridge temperature zone. But I had to explain to DH that no, the salmon lunches I boought for you are NOT safe any more! Men!

It seems like most of the DFW districts who were planning a delayed start for today ended up cancelling early this morning. It is getting warmer and melting everything thankfully.
