That tic toe wet glass thread got me thinking about how people store their cups and glasses inside their cupboards. My sister and I have had the discussion about whether it is better to store your cups/glasses right side up or right side down. I prefer right side up because I know that once that cupboard door is closed, the cup/glass is basically protected. Putting them right side down is dragging the lip, the part your mouth comes into contact with, through whatever dust and dirt is on your shelf, inevitably transferring that dirt to your cup or glass. If I stored them right side down, I would feel that I had to constantly remove everything and wipe down the shelves all the time. Not that I let my shelves get noticeably dirty, but I don't think they are clean enough to put my mouth on, which is what you are doing with storing glasses right side down.
And something that made me weirdly happy in this new house, the previous owner had her husband install extra shelves in almost all of the kitchen cabinets. He also put in one of those rotating things in a corner cabinet so that you can reach everything easily. And he added a few upright boards in one of the cabinets to make it easy to stand your cookie sheets and cooling grates on their sides in the cupboard. I can put more things into the shelves with pretty much no wasted space. The pantry is the same way with one shelf just the right height for canned goods. And when I purchased a few drinking glasses, I was happy to see that they fit with the tiniest smidgeon of space between the top of the glass and the bottom of the shelf above them. I didn't think about it at the time, but this does make for less room for any dust particles to settle into the glasses. I was just happy that they fit in the cupboard that made the most sense for me to keep them - right next to the refrigerator where it would be logical to have glasses. And the bottom shelf in that cabinet is even shorter, perfect for coffee cups. I put my coffee maker directly below that cupboard and now all drinking vessels are in the same location. It's the little things....

However they fit. We have a weird hodgepodge of glasses and cups right now, and 2 teenagers - so sometimes we have a million drinking vessels, and other times 3.

I grew up in a house with roaches and mice and no cabinet will protect you from those. Even though I live in a better place now, some things you don't unlearn. Always top down.

My regular drinking glasses are open end down. Coffee mugs and ‘good’ glass wear is open side up.

I haven’t worked in a lot of restaurants but have eaten in enough to see that most restaurants store the clean drink ware upside down so I do it that way too.

My cupboards are clean, my cups and glasses are clean, I have every faith that I'm not going to catch anything or put anything gross in my mouth if I store them open sides down.
I'm going to go snog my shelves and see if I get cooties.

Our plastic cups are wider at the top so they go open face down after stacking to keep from tipping over if they get nudged, coffee mugs go in upright and jelly/mason jars go in upright. It's really just how best they fit up there.

Martha isn't always right! Glasses are usually right side up because I'm a stacker. Mugs were right side down (easier to stack), but now I'm back to right side up. I purchased some wire shelves to stack my mugs (yes, I have too many) and they make it so much easier to store them (sounds kinda like the shelves Lexica has in her new home).

Generally upside down, but I have some short glasses that I can stack- the bottom glass is upside down and the top glass is right side up.

Top down, stacked if possible. I have a LOT of glassware.
I have a padded mesh cushioned liner on my shelves, to protect the glass. I wash it once or twice a year when (if) I clean out my cabinets.

I store my drinkware top side UP, and this is a hill I will die on LOL! I don't want the rim of my cup to be sitting on the shelf that may be dirty or dusty. I mean, I know that the shelf isn't actually dirty or dusty, but it still gets stuck in my mind. Which is odd, because I am not a germaphobe at all. Except about this, apparently. If I go to someone else's house, and their drinkware is stored rim side down, I give the rim a surreptitious wipe before using it. ETA: And having said all of that, DSO unpacked the dishwasher lat night, and put my coffee glasses rim side down, and I just realised that I used one an hour ago without even wiping it. I grew up in a house with roaches and mice and no cabinet will protect you from those. Even though I live in a better place now, some things you don't unlearn. Always top down. And that's exactly why I would put them top up!! If I thought that roaches and mice had been running through my cupboard, I don't want the rims that I will be putting my mouth on, to be sitting in their grotty little footprints.

I tend to put them in the right way up, as I stack them. I read once that fine crystal glassware should be stored right side up, as it reduces damage and wear to the rim. And while I rarely use my crystal glasses, I got into the habit of storing all of my glasses that way.

Right side up...also because I read it's better for the rims of the glasses and at this point it's habit. I've never had a dust issue and if they were dusty, the outside would be too if stored upside down and I'd want to wash them anyway.

I have mostly open shelves. All my drinking glasses are clear cut glass. They are right side up. Some are stored in my regular, closed cupboard. One wall of those cupboards. Those are also drinking side up.

And while I rarely use my crystal glasses, I got into the habit of storing all of my glasses that way. This is how I was taught. Although I do put my every day mugs/glasses upside down, the fine crystal glasses are stored right side up. I've never lived anywhere that has so much dust or vermin that I needed to worry about those factors. Although I think that getting a glass off the shelf would be better than the dust/mice nesting in my upright glasses!
