Hello peas... So, I asked a long while back about plat 6 or big shot.. and several peas said plat 6...
Now I am sorta wondering.... if you had the funds would you still get the platinum 6 from spellbinders.... orrrrr would you get a silhouette portrait? I do have a cameo 4 plus... but it is really big for scrapbooking to me... to be honest it intimidates me... lol.. but I think a portrait might be better for scrapping because its just an 8 inch cross instead of 15...
Sooooo, if you were buying a new die cutting system.... which would you choose>??

You don't mention if you already have a metal die cutting machine, just that you already have the electronic (Silhouette). From that information only, I would choose something that uses metal dies/embossing folders. The Cameo and the Portrait use the same software, and would essentially do the same things, especially if you are just using it to cut paper. I would not downsize the Cameo to the Portrait if I had the room for the Cameo and it still works. I don't understand why one would be less intimidating than the other. A lot of the "work" is done within the software. The process is the same whether the cutting mat is 7" or 15". Good luck!

Platinum 6. I like having options. I think the Portrait won't be any less intimidating. You probably just have to use your Cameo more until you are good friends so you won't be intimidated. Does the size really matter?

I have a Cameo that I love and use a lot for scrapbook layouts, cards, and more. However, I'm about to purchase the Spellbinder Platinum 6 in addition. I want something small to use for cardmaking and embossing, and the Platinum 6 fits the bill. I don't think I even own any metal dies, except maybe one that came along with some stamps I purchased. (Yes, I'll probably get a few basic dies to use for cardmaking, but not many. I already have a lot of Silhouette files and don't want to repeat...)
I agree with others about your use of the Cameo you already have. Maybe take some classes and get more familiar with it so you're more comfortable using it. The software will be the same for the Portrait. To me the Platinum 6 manual die cutter fulfills a completely different purpose than my Silhouette Cameo (embossing for instance), so that's why I see no problem with having both.

Does the size really matter? My understanding is it's not the size, it's how you use it!

Yes you can. You just need to move the rollers closer together so that they run along the edge of the mat. When I have a question about how to do something with my Silhouette, I search on Silhouette School. She does a really good job of addressing common questions and I know she has a series on taking it out of the box and making your first project. You need to use the machine to troubleshoot the issues and then it’s fun to use. Don’t pick a time sensitive, difficult, or gift project. Use your ugly paper to learn on and make test cuts. And to answer your other question, I have a Big Shot because I sometimes use the old school steel rule dies. I would never have just a digital cutter—I still reach for my metal dies most of the time.
