To those asking to see cards -- thanks! I just hope I finish some. Some of those products look a little intimidating. For those of you vigorously expressing your cynicism about this retreat, I'd just like to remind you that it's not nice to yuck other people's yums. I read the rest of the replies after I posted above. I too am sorry if I added to any doubt. I didnt mean to 'yuck on your yum' by any means, i just meant i could get a week long vacation for myself for the same price. I agree w the ladies that we all spend differently and have different priorities. I really was considering this when I read they reopened, but the darn exchange and shipping squashed that idea. I really do hope you learn lots and enjoy every minute. And I do look forward to see your cards!

I can't wait to see what you make, Shakti. I didn't see that they were doing a virtual retreat until I saw this thread, today. When I first got FB so that I could do Crop and Create I signed up for almost every class I came across, too. I was happy I did but now 2.5 years later I'm getting a bit burned out on classes. I still get FOMO every time one is posted on this board, though.
I would have loved to get 6 of those round ink pads, I think they're so cool and they're the perfect size and shape for using with stamp platforms. I really love their small brushes, too.
Please post your projects if you can!!

Got the supply list for each class. There are six classes and seven projects. Four out of seven don't even use the giant stencil. JMcG does a project with the stencil and the included inks. Laura Bassen, with whom I'm not familiar, uses the stencil and EIGHTEEN other Altenew inks. Not looking forward to that one. Bridget Casey uses the stencil and included inks for a watercolor technique. I'd look forward to that one, but it's the last class, so I know I'll be fried. I guess that's for the next day.

Shakti - I apparently have the will power and memory of gnat because I did sign up for the class. LOL. I had completely forgotten until the box arrived. So, I'll be joining in on the fun.

I was debating on either going to the Scrapbook expo in Chantilly this Saturday or purchasing this retreat. Decided to go with the Altenew retreat.
I'm kind of in a crafting funk, so I figured this will give me new ideas. And I haven't tried layering stencils, so this should be fun.

Hurray — the more the merrier!
The FB group is showing some Jaycee’s cards — now I’m getting really excited!

They posted one of JenM’s cards. It almost identical to the one in her recent YouTube. Same technique, just using an Altenew set. While it’s a beautiful card, I’m disappointed. You can learn that technique for free.

Hmmm, yeah, if I understand what I'm looking at, that's a technique I've seen her do a bunch of times, but never been interested enough to try it Thinking about it some more, however, it's not a technique I think I've ever seen in any of Altenew's classes or blog posts or inspiration emails, so maybe it makes sense to them to offer it.

It looks to me like one of the cards where she has a fancy die-cut as the front of the card, so the front is shaped, but the back is rectangular. Like here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYn0NoJv2DY. Now, the retreat card seems to have used an embossing folder on the rectangular back that's showing. That doesn't seem like you'd be able to write a message on it, so there may be a twist to this one, but I'm not sure how that would go. EtA: Yes I do see now how it's going to go.

Yes, that’s the card. I just think it’s odd she would do something so similar.

I think the Altenew floral is very well-suited to the technique due to its large size. Given the timing, I assume she designed the retreat project first. The question to me thus becomes why didn’t she wait until after the pricey retreat to post the similar project on her free website.

The question to me thus becomes why didn’t she wait until after the pricey retreat to post the similar project on her free website. If I had signed up for the retreat, I would be really upset that similar projects and techniques were being shown, and not just before the retreat. Recently I watched a video that had her name on it, but was actually a guest artist from Altenew doing the demo. I didn’t notice if it was a recently posted video or an older one. However, from something she said at the beginning of the video, it sounded like it was the second time in a row that she’d had a guest artist instead of doing a video herself, and she assured those who follow her, that she would be doing the video herself next time. She is evidently expected to provide new videos regularly, but she is also often participating in retreats, such as the Altenew Retreat. Whether or not she is overcommitted, having family challenges, or whatever the reason, it’s got to be hard to constantly come up with new card ideas, regular videos, and everything else she seems to do on such a frequent basis. Even so, it’s not really fair to those who paid so much for the retreat to create a free video that shows a similar card, shortly before the paid retreat.

She has always been quite transparent that she considers herself a mom first and crafting professional second. She regularly says, perhaps even in her FAQ, that she does not have a set schedule for posting videos for this reason. I'm not sure what overcommitted could mean in that context.

I don't want to post pictures of the box contents until after the unboxing. But, if anyone wants a peek, I'm happy to share a link to the pics I took.
The vibe of the group is different than the SCT FB group. Instead of sneak peeks, we have been getting full pics of some of the cards (3 so far - Jennifer, Lauren and Jaycee). There is still a bit of the "my box hasn't come"/"my box has arrived" posts. But, it's a smaller group so easier to manage and while there is a little fan girling, its more moderate.

Shakti - I apparently have the will power and memory of gnat because I did sign up for the class. LOL. I had completely forgotten until the box arrived. So, I'll be joining in on the fun. Count me in for forgetting about it until I got the box, haha! So Shakti - you aren't alone taking it here! I bought it right away for the discounted price (I think with tax, it was like $248 for me, which now I recall made me think it was worth it, especially with the brushes and the ink pads) but I bought it right after the Altenew/Spellbinders class earlier this year. Was that the class that had the limit of 100 people? I know it didn't affect me (I set an alarm!) but I know a lot of people were disappointed with that. Hopefully if they do anything on Zoom again, they've now paid for the Zoom subscription that has a larger # of people attending. Maybe I will be a pest and ask them! And yeah - that is weird that the card we are doing already has a free tutorial. I wonder if I can copy it from that rather than the class. But I see that there is another person has already posted their version of it - but it looks like they used that Stampin' Up Subtle embossing folder. I think that person was also in the SCT event (Bette?), so her sample in Facebook looked like she did the same 'affect' of using that Embossing Folder - but that's $50 to get that now on Ebay? Argh!! Crazy. That embossing folder is nice - makes it look like linen/textured paper - but I don't think the Linen embossing folder that Altenew would be as nice. Surely some company that is reading us could make a new embossing folder that does a similar job - but for a lot less than $50!! (ok not discontinued and sold on Ebay as a collector's item...)

I got my kit in the mail today, yay! So, I have never done an online event. Are we supposed to cut out any dies or prep any material before the event? Or do we do it just during the class?
I tried to look for any type of instruction in the box but couldn't find any.
Thanks in advance!

I got an email today with the instruction PDFs for each class. I saw the same material somewhere on the FB group yesterday. Each class starts with the homework steps.

Here is a look at the kit contents: Six full size ink pads in: Coral Red, Dusty Pink, Navy, Pool, Mid Yellow and Olive. I don't have any Altenew inks, so I am looking forward to playing with these. Mini blending brush set, 3 detail blending brushes, set of stamp conditioning erasers, sheet of enamel shapes and 12 A2 card bases. And a cute enamel pin. topsail road restaurantsBold blooms die set and streamlined die set (coordinates with the stamp I have pictured below) Secret Garden stencil (7 layers) and die set) Streamlined outline stamp set, Streamlined 3D embossing folder and Tiled Blooms 3D embossing folder

Thanks for sharing the contents cmpeter. They look awesome. I love the idea of round ink pads, it seems like they will be really convenient for inking stamps on a stamp platform without getting ink all over the plate. I can't wait to see the projects.

At least they give you a decent amount of product for what you paid. I still prefer to choose my own products, but if I had signed up and were having second thoughts, the kit contents that have been shared here would help me look forward to the event.
Have fun! I really am looking forward to seeing your cards!

I am at my mom’s in NC, away from my craft room and unable to work on the homework. I have watched the live product intros and have been been looking at the FB group.
If there’s anyone who’s registered for this event who also attended the spring cards C&CD, do you think this die set where folks are recommending Press n Seal, adhesive sheets, and other tricks be a good place to use the hold and release paper we got at that event?

So, when Don was talking about not liking virtual retreats because you don’t really get any respite from the distractions of daily life, I wasn’t worried. DH was great about handling all the things during C&CD. When it turned out DH would be out of town this weekend and I would need to do at least some kid schlepping, I wasn’t worried because I could just do some time-shifting with the recordings…but something was nagging at me. They say the recordings will be available the next day, not the same day. And my older kid is coming home from college and my younger has a Mother’s Day outing planned. And my family has not historically been very good with MD, so I want to lean into their efforts. I can definitely do all of Jaycee’s class live, which is the one I am most excited about. I should be able to do all of the next one, which I think is JMcG’s first. I will need to skip Laura Basset’s class (truly heartbroken). Might have to leave before the end of Jennifer’s second class, but I think I’ll just be a little late for the pick up. Or leave that one early to ensure I’m back by 5? I guess I’ll see how I’m feeling at that time. I know i won’t have anything left in me for that last class — it ends at my bedtime! Typing that all out, it’s better than I had feared. And while I was kind of looking forward to finishing up what I missed on Sunday, I think the current plan is better

I was very disappointed to hear the recordings will have a day delay. I have no intention of starting at 6:00 am PST to join live. So, I’ll have to wait until next weekend as or Sunday plans won’t work with a crafting day.
