I'd like to get one, but there are many to choose from. Should I get metal? Plastic? 6" or 12"? I want it to use on cards mainly, but might use it for titles on a layout.
What do you have, and why? Links appreciated!

I picked up a basic 12" plastic one at HL in the art section - so far it doesn't seem to be helping me line up my titles any straighter but it does help me with getting other things (paper) lined up.

I love mine. It’s a plastic one from Amazon. I think a metal one would be nice though, I packed mine to go to a friend’s place the other day and was worried it might snap.

I have a couple 12” ones I use for scrapbooking, but they can be frustrating because one end is too high to butt things up against. Lots of people like the SSS 6” but I feel like it’s a crazy price for a 6” ruler. I bought this one: a.co/d/fM8QeHh on Amazon. As far as I can tell it’s just like the SSS one without the branding. I like it, but mostly use it in my not-Misty, because again, it does not lay flat against paper because the lip holds one end up a bit. However, the 6” is easier to use on smaller projects like cards.

I have a basic Westcott brand clear plastic one. I think I probably bought it in the stationery section of the supermarket or maybe at Staples or somewhere like that. It was cheap. I remember seeing the price of a crafty brand one (the SSS one?) and saying NOPE! I think clear is better - my first reaction to the idea of metal was that it would make it harder to space things out if I couldn't see through it to see where I'm putting stuff in relation to things below it. I bought mine because Jennifer McGuire said it would help me get things straight but it doesn't help as much as I thought. For one thing the lip is a touch too high so I have to press it down against the paper and that's not always very successful. For another, nothing I do is perfectly straight so I'm better off with a visual "looks straight on my slightly crooked card" so I hardly ever use it. But it's handy as a ruler and not completely useless for its intended purpose, but it doesn't quite fit in my ruler drawer and the T gets caught on things in my desk organizer so I was ready to throw it out the window last week. I think I would get as much/more benefit from a work surface with measurements and lines on it like this:

This is the same one I have. I specifically wanted a clear one for the same reason you cited. I use mine quite a bit, mostly for squaring off where I'm going to stamp (I don't have a Misti or other similar tool), marking cuts for cards and layouts, marking where I'm going to block off part of my watercolor paper for painting and even for drawing parallel lines for hand-lettering or lining up titles cut with my Silhouette. I store it upright (T at the top) in my desktop organizer. It sticks up out of the top but that just makes it easier to grab when I need it LOL.

I have a blue T square and a clear. Go with a clear one. I bought the clear one at the dollar store or some other cheap place. You don't need an expensive one, unless you want a certain logo on it.

I have a clear one too. I have both a 6” and 12”. I prefer the 6” for cards.

I have a 6" plastic one from SSS. I love the size; it makes everything very convenient by being the perfect size for cardmaking.

I exclusively scrapbook. Indicative of my linear style, the first, oldest, & most frequently-used tool I have is an inexpensive, clear, plastic t-square ruler! :nerd:

I’ve seen them used in videos but never seriously considered getting one before. Joann and Michael’s have inexpensive 12” clear ones, but not in store (Michael’s online only; Joann out of stock locally). Nothing clear at Staples at all. The only little one I see is the SSS (3x the price!). Maybe I’ll toss them on my wishlists and toss one in when I have some other reason to place a shipping order. If the length becomes annoying, I can cut it down, as someone mentioned. Although if I were “customizing” I’d probably make it 8”.

Someone pointed out that ACOT has a code for free shipping today only. They carry the inexpensive 12" clear T ruler that Dick Blick (and probably also the same as Joann & Michael's) has.

My only recommendation is that if you purchase one, buy one that comes in a single part. I bought an inexpensive one from Amazon and the ruler part and the top of the "T" part came separately and it has been impossible to get the ruler into the part so that it is straight. Needless to say, not an effective T-ruler at all.

No T's for me. I use a plastic ruler and a triangle on a 12" cutting mat. If you must use a t square, use a mat or 2, to elevate the work and allow for the lip of the square.

Well, thank you for the tip about elevating the work. I have never been able to get a straight line with my T-ruler and figured I was just T-ruler-challenged. I didn't understand how people in the videos I watched could use them so effectively. There was always such a gap between the T and my paper that it just was never effective. I will elevate my work from now on, duh! It's so simple. I bought a really nice 6-inch T-square ruler off of AliExpress a few months ago. I had been using (improperly, it turns out) a 12-inch one from Staples before that.

We just had a new Hobby Lobby open near me, and I found a 12-inch clear ruler there for $3.29. Made by Tech Tools.
Thanks for all your responses!

I bought a clear 12" one at walmart. I really didn't like it because it was so big. Then it broke on the way to a crop. SS had one in their card kit. I loved the kit and that was an added bonus. I enjoy using it.

I have a clear plastic one from Hobby Lobby as do two of my friends. I would say get a metal one if you can. We were once cropping together and I leaned over one of their bags and snapped her t-ruler. I of course felt awful and replaced it. So they are a little flimsy. IF something happens to the one that I have I plan to purchase a metal one.
