What is the best, easiest, tastiest way to make icing to dip cake pops into?
I know cake pops are so 2002... but my dgd is 7 and she wants to make some...

If a 7 year old is making them, I'd just use icing from the can. A few seconds in the microwave will loosen it up enough to work with cake pops.
Keep it easy and simple, as it will be a process and quite a bit of clean up!

I've never heard of icing being used to *dip* the cake pops into. The ones I've comes across have been dipped in candy melts/melted chocolate.

They’re usually dipped in melted candy melts. If it gets too thick and clumpy you can thin it with a small amount of vegetable oil or Crisco. You can use real chocolate too but it has to be tempered and that can be tricky.

By far easiest is getting candy melts as you don't have to worry about tempering the chocolate. Also can get bright colors that will appeal to a 7 year old!

Melted merkens wafers or Wilton candy melts….but add some shortening to it to thin it out….

Wait, cake pops can go out of style? No. I won’t believe that. Cake anything is never out of style.

Oops—I was answering the icing part, not the dipping part. You use frosting to make the balls with crumbled cake, and then dip in the candy coating.

I put the cake on the sticks and froze them for a bit. Then dipped them in melted chocolate wafers. Just microwave the wafers, no needed for a special melter.

After the wafers are hot and melted to dipping consistency I set the bowl of candy coating over top of a second bowl of extra-hot water to keep the candy melts hot a bit longer. Nest the bowls, sort of like a double boiler (but not actually on your stove top), KWIM? Have fun! Lots of fun flavor/color/decoration combos to try!

Use canned frosting to make the cake pop itself. Use something you like and tastes good to you...I like Pillsbury Cream Cheese flavor (not any other brand for me though). I use a small portion scoop to make uniform size balls. Roll them around a bit to keep round. I dip my stick into some of the melted chocolate before sticking it in the cookie ball. I refrigerate the balls before dipping. I gently melt the 'chocolate' wafers in the microwave in a thick glass, like a pyrex measuring glass. It seems to hold the heat better. Don't over heat!!!! That is important. Start with 30 seconds and stir. If they are almost all melted, stop. Let the residual heat keep melting them. If you over heat - it can sieze, and then you are done. Don't let any water get it in either. If you have a coffee cup warmer, you can place your melted cup of chocolate on that to keep it warmer! Or put them on a warm electric griddle or mini skillet, if you have a smaller one. Have a sheet of parchment paper to set the cake pops on. I like mine with the stick up. If you want stick down, you'll need something that can hold the sticks. Some people can make them look SO cute. Mine are 'homemade' ... lol! The best tasting melts are the Ghirardelli! Easy to find also. I love the white chocolate ones. They have milk and dark too. You can color the white with OIL based food color, but do not use the water based drops!

SOOOOO... I know yall have been waiting for an update!! lmao
We made cake pops over the weekend... I used a funfetti box cake... left out the oil.. (it was suggested somewhere?) All the grands were here and we had a great time rolling balls... i used a small ice cream scoop and gave each kid a ball... we didnt put them on sticks just on parchment and each kid got their own little set up... they picked the colors to mix.. i used white melting chips.. they rolled and dipped and sprinkles!!! SPRINKLES EVERYWHERE!!!
The younger 4 n 5 yr old had cake crumbled into the icing.. they were a little rough.. and all the grands wanted to eat the icing after.. but i put a big stop to that.. they did have tons of icing on their fingers to lick off... dont worry no one was served these except me and dh.. they were supposed to save some for their parents but they ate them before pick up.. lol
A great weekend.. they cant wait to do it again.. i totally can!!! huge MESS!!!

Although you might be the Cake Pop Grandma from now on... lol. Creative endeavors at that age always seem like WAY more work to set up and clean it up than the actual time spent creating... worth it in the end though. ^.^

I keep thinking about making the Oreo easter egg pops for Easter. I probably won't get that done, but I always think I will!

Dip the lollipop stick into melted chocolate, cool, then into the formed balls, then dip the balls into melted chocolate. It helps keep them on the stick.
melt the chocolate in the microwave on 70% power and stir every minute or so.

hahahahaha Sprinkles and baking with kids is similar to glitter and crafting with kids. Sounds like it was a lot of fun though and that's what count.
