My Whirlpool top loader is making me nuts. It takes forever to move through the sensing part of the cycle, and 9 times out of 10 the drain and spin part of the cycle completely fails and I’m left with a sopping wet load. It doesn’t seem to matter how big or small the load is or what I’m washing.
If you’ve dealt with a similar issue, were you able to repair it yourself or get it repaired? I hate to move into a cycle of costly repairs if it’s simply a washer on its last legs. It’s about 5 years old.
If we end up replacing it, do you have one you love?

My washer was doing the same thing. It was also a whirpool and something was wrong with the cycle sensor. Right when the cycle was done, it would start all over (the last click to signal done clicked to start again). It took me a while to notice. I had to set a couple of spin cycles just to make it dry enough. We looked up the steps to reset the panel and tried those steps multiple times, but it didn’t work. It would have been nice if it did, because my washer was only like 6 years old. So we went shopping and I did not find a washer I loved. I settled. I hate it when the water won’t start filling until the lid is closed. I just hate it. I hate the idea of putting clothes directly on the detergent. So now I dilute the soap separately, pour it in, then put in the clothes and start. And we found out that the height was slightly higher, so the washer door doesn’t stay open. It’s not a huge deal. Just a few small annoyances. Good luck. But definitely try the reset process (it’s just clicking the buttons in a certain order) and see if it works for you.

We bought a Speed Queen. The dryer repair guy saw our washer and said in his over 20 years of fixing washers and dryers, he's never had to repair one. We needed one that would wash big blankets frequently. Nothing fancy, but the front load we owned got musty and gross. The top load with glass lid (can't remember the brand) lasted maybe five years.

We found a good tutorial on YouTube and we’re going to give it a try.

I’ll second the recommendation for Speed Queen. We replaced our washer and dryer in 2018 after the dryer died (our old set was over 20 years old at that point so we replaced both). Never looked back. The Speed Queens are not fancy, but they are workhorses. Love them. Good luck!

I agree, too, on Speed Queen. I have both washer and dryer.

Years ago I had a particular washing machine that I had to get repaired a couple of times. After the second repair, the guy said to me that if something else goes wrong with it, just buy a new one. Each repair was a $100 call out fee plus the cost of parts/labour, so about $300 each time. Three repairs would have cost me close to $1000.
I hate that washing machines don't last very long these days. My current washing machine is an AEG and cost about $2700 AUD, so it had better last a bloody long time! It's the first front loader I've had, and I like it a lot more than I thought I would.
ETA: I just checked to see if Speed Queen machines are available here, out of curiosity. The shop where I buy most of my appliances only has one, an 8.5kg top loader (which is smaller than my 10kg machine) and it is $3500 - yikes!

Another Speed Queen owner. 10 year warranty. I have had it for 2 years and it has been the best one I have ever had. Washes in 20 minutes. Dries fast. Nothing fancy but perfect for me

We have an LG top loader, top rated by Consumer Reports. We love it. This is what we just got too, to replace an LG front loader that lasted about 15 years. I didn’t want the front load again because of the stinky drum factor so we went with a top loader this time. Zero regrets! It’s super quiet and can handle big loads. I love that I’ll finally be able to soak things again.

We were getting detergent residue on our clothes- visibly on dark colored items

We also have a Speed Queen washer and dryer. They aren't fancy but we have never had a problem with them.

Seems we have discussed this before and Speed Queen was very popular. It is a workhorse and apparently does not spend the money on advertising. (I have never seen an ad for one.) I think it is the brand for many commercial laundromats.

If we end up replacing it, do you have one you love? Old school Speed Queen. I've had mine for a few years, so they don't have that exact model anymore, but they have similar. I also have a LG top loader/no agitator. Stay away from these, no matter the brand. It is an HE (which, I think all machines are now) and it does not get clothes clean. It takes over an hour to do a load, unless I do quick wash - which is even worse at getting anything clean. It is often hung up in a cycle because the load isn't right (even though I do know how to load that type of machine). My husband bought me the Speed Queen and it is AMAZING! It does a load in about 30 minutes. I don't have to load it in any special manner. It doesn't get hung up because the load shifted. It can use HOT water, and LOTS of it! LOL I know this isn't efficient, as far as energy use - but I have dirty greasy bloody ranch wear to wash often. I need to be able to get that stuff clean. I recommend the Speed Queen TR5!

This is what we just got and I haven’t noticed any problems at all with clothes not getting clean and my DH and kid spill stuff on EVERYTHING. If I pretreat stains the way I always have, it comes out clean. I recently washed all of our bedding including the dog hair covered king sized comforter after DH had Covid without any issues. I also washed a really nasty chenille rug in it and it came out perfect. I did have to clean out the drum afterward but I expected that because the rug also had a bunch of dog hair on it. When I do larger loads I always use water plus and extra rinse and haven’t had any issues at all. For something really dirty I would probably soak it which wasn’t an option with my old front loader.

This is what we just got and I haven’t noticed any problems at all with clothes not getting clean and my DH and kid spill stuff on EVERYTHING. My laundry would probably make your shudder.. LOL My husband actually fell in a manure pit one day. Yep. That is par for the course. He spends the winter working on our equipment, so heavy greasy dirty.. ugh! I am sure the technology has improved since I bought my LG HE. I still have it and do use it occasionally. But when I use it on farm/ranch clothes - I can still see actual dirt on them, in creases and folds. I don't have the 'add extra water' option. So I have to let it fill. Shut it off to clear it, then restart it with water in, so it refills with more water. It's ridiculous! So having the 'add more water' option would certainly make it a better machine!! Mine won't actually fill with straight hot water either. Even if I have it set to HOT, it still adds cold water in. I have sat there while it filled and shut the cold tap off, so it wouldn't mix it in. I am sure that isn't the way with all the models - but dang - that is frustrating!

I have had to replace a few washers ... UGH - If I ever need to again, I'm going Speed Queen top load with an agitator.
I've had front loaders that are terrible and stink. My LG top load right now, doesn't have an agitator and I wish I would have gotten one with.
Best wishes to you!!

We replaced my front loader (best day of my life was when we got it, best day of my life is when we got rid of it! LOL) with an LG top of the line top loader. It does HUGE loads no problem. I don't sort laundry anymore. We add until it's full and then I wash. Queen size quilts? No issues. I can put a set of twin sheets, a set of queen sheets, and a set of cal king sheets in one load no problem! I love that it has a soak option. It even has a "bulky bedding" cycle. We use the "delicates" cycle for bag stuff- leggings, sports bras, regular bras, etc. I've never had any issues with things not being clean and it has no agitator.
The best part? It was FREE and came with a matching dryer! A friend DH did work for was moving and the washer leaked and he didn't want to take it with him so he asked DH to haul it to the dump for him. Since he was getting rid of the washer, he gave DH the dryer. DH brought it home, found the leak and fixed it. It was less than a year old! So far we've been using it for 2 years with no issues at all. I love my washer!

We recently had to replace our old Whirlpool and went with a Samsung top-loader that US News rated its best top-loading machine for 2023. It was about half the price of the base model Speed Queen. So far so good!

I've never had anything but a front loader and never have issues with smells. They just get gross around the gasket. Mine was all moldy and I dried it after every load. Eventually, detergent and gunk builds up if you're not religious about cleaning it (as I got toward the end of my time with ours) and it's just ick.

Sorry for the repetitiveness, but I am super happy with my Speed Queen.
No smelly gunky door to clean or leave open. No feeling like there is not enough water to clean the clothes. I bought it based purely on Pea recommendation. Never heard of that brand before reading about it here.

Speed Queen is made in USA if that is any factor in your purchasing. Speed Queen is in Wisconsin.
