I have debating dipping toes in the hot foil pool for months now. To be honest though, I’m more of a jumping in with both feet kind of girl when it comes to my hobby. 🥴 Anyhow, most of the time I’m ok with not having one, and can make do with using bits of metallic paper and/embossing in a metallic. However, I’ve been knee deep in Pink Fresh products for the last month, and boy, do I feel the urge to foil. I have 2 PF background sets (overlapping geo, and quadrant backdrop) that consist of a stencil set, hot foil plate, and the coordinating die. Unfortunately they didn’t make a stamp for the outlines in these sets, so the only option if I want that detail is to buy a Glimmer, and then invest the money into dies too.
So, now that I have THAT out of my system (thanks for sticking with me), did you go “all in” on foil, and then regret it? For any reason…cost, storage space, can’t get the hang of it, not as much of a fan of it once you tried it, or…?
Or conversely, do you love using yours and use it often enough to not regret the $$$, etc?
Thanks so much!

I jumped in with hot foiling a couple of years ago and do not regret it at all! I love it! I have a Gemini so I use the Gemini hot foiling system. At first, I was a bit "meh" about it and slightly disappointed as I wasn't getting good results. BUT I watched lots of videos (Yana Smakula and Nancy Stamps on YouTube in particular) and changed the paper I was using and now I get almost perfect results every time. I have foils and foil plates from many different companies. I just love the finish foiling gives. I tend to do hot foiling in batches so I am not getting everything out for just one sentiment... I really find that I love it for holiday cards!! So no regrets here!

I jumped in with my entire body and love it! I also have the Gemini, however they discontinued the model I have so I'd go with a glimmer if I were you, plus the glimmer can be used in any die cut machine where as the Gemini is exclusive.
Let me know if you decide to do it and I'll link you into some places to get the stuff!

I jumped in with both feed on the ThermoWeb Deco foil. The kind that uses a Minc or a Laminator. I wouldn't say I regret it, but I don't use it enough. That's why I'm hesitant to spend the $$$ on the SB's Hot Foil system and foils. But I do love the look of it.

I've tried so many foiling systems and didn't love them, even disliked the minc stuff, so I'm surprised I kept trying them until.... I got the Glimmer system for a Christmas gift year before last and I love it! No regrets and there are a lot of cute products to use with it. Bonus is you can use the plates to emboss.

MichyM I don't hot foil so I don't have anything to add on that front. But for the issue of not having a detail stamp for some of your products, you can ink and heat emboss with your die. While it doesn't give the same look as foiling, heat embossing is an alternative.

I’m another that jumped in with both feet and while I don’t use it as much as I should I have no regrets. I mostly use it for sentiments but those PinkFresh plates initially called my name now the darn things are shouting it😀.

The foil plates are for details within the design. Like this, it should show the foil and the die: www.pinkfreshstudio.com/products/quadrant-backdrop-hot-foil

Oh and so far, y'all are terrible, TERRIBLE influences.
Just in case I might want to check them out, it there a substantial sale of these that I should look out for? Any particular foils better than others? I already use the super smooth Hammermill 100lb, so at least there's that.

Eh, MichyM, you asked to be influenced terribly. The question is, why am I here?

Question! As someone who has been tempted by the whole foiling in the past... can you only foil with the special "foil plates" or are there ways to use other supplies you have with foil? I do love the look, but have told myself I can just emboss.

I do love the look, but have told myself I can just emboss. You can use regular dies to foil but the lines are much thinner.

I do love the look, but have told myself I can just emboss. You can foil with any metal shape if it has smooth bottom and top and is not too thick for your diecutter. But the foiling plates you buy give a much more smooth foiled image. To answer MichyM , I purchased the Glimmer System with Christmas money, so see it as a gift to myself. I don't use it nearly as often or as well as I would like to, but it does take some time and patience to learn and practice. That system makes a much crisper foiled image than the Minc, (which I also purchased with Christmas money a few years ago) but the Minc gives you the option of using the reactive gel on stencils and stamps and therefore expanding the fun you can have. The Minc will also foil from a print image if that is done with a laser printer.

I tried the laminator foiling and realized that I don't enjoy handling or storing the plastic foiling sheets and I wasn't getting great results so that was an easy one to give up. The hot foil thing is a tiny bit tempting - I like the embossed foil look better than the laminator. But I still don't like messing around with the foil sheets and don't really want another category of things to shop, organize, store, and use. Especially when it's linked to products where I'm going to be tempted into buying bundles... I'll buy specialty papers with foiling here and there or just stick with gold embossing powder, or good old black ink. Most people receiving cards hardly notice details like how you got the shiny on there anyway (so gold embossing is good enough if I need shiny) and most of the cards I make are quick patterned paper cards for donation anyway. But that's just me

I think the technique in the video can keep me going without a Glimmer for some time, especially combined with buying fancy occasional foiled cardstocks to use with word dies and things like that. Glad I dropped in to read the discussion.

Except it was the Heidi Swapp foil, but mostly because I got them at Tuesday Morning. But I refuse to buy any type of hot foiling plates/products because then I probably will regret it. I have watched a few videos, but mostly I avoid looking. And truly, the amount of people I make cards for using the pricey stuff is dwindling.

I love hot foiling, I don't regret it at all. I have the Gemini Jr one but I'd get the Spellbinders one now if I had the option. Gemini Jr discontinued theirs, so I bought a spare hot plate just in case mine warps anymore than it already has. I really overheated it and it just totally curved upwards, but its still usable for now.
I don't use my Minc very much at all, however I definitely got my money's worth out of it. I used it to make about 50 invitations for my niece's engagement party a few years ago - I printed the invitation text on my laser printer and then foiled it with the Minc and it turned out beautifully.
Then for her wedding shower last year I used my Silhouette with the WRMK hot foil pen and that turned out even better for foiled text than the Minc - it was gorgeous! So now if I had to redo it all, I'd buy the Glimmer system for cards, and I'd buy the WRMK hot foil pen for my Silhouette for invitations and text inside cards. I wouldn't buy the Minc system.
And that's my 2 cents.
