I didn't want to hijack the San Francisco thread, so thought I'd start a more general one. Who else is having this awful wind? Here in the DC area it's been really bad. And constant. And the weather report says it's going to continue. Usually when we have windy weather it might go on for several hours, then it stops. This is just going on and on. Yesterday evening my dh and I were sitting here watching the news and we heard a *THUMP!* from outside. We looked out the window to our deck but everything seemed okay. Then we went outside to look into other yards -- we have a huge maple tree that causes me anxiety every time it's windy -- and we saw our neighbor's garage. A huge branch from the neighbor on the other side had fallen straight down like an arrow, straight through the garage. omg. Thank goodness it wasn't on a house. Lots of power outages here because of trees down on wires. I know that many of you are having more than just wind -- anyone who lives farther up in the northeast has the snow also. Isn't the first day of spring really soon?

It’s windy here too (northern Maryland) and we are being warned of fire danger. The ground is dry and the wind can take a small spark and cause a wildfire/brush fire that can quickly get out of control. I’d rather have the snow that’s further north lol.

Southern MD here and its just awful. We have really tall pine trees in the back yard, the ground is wet from the rain and they have shallow roots. The last wind took down a neighbor's leeland cyprus into our yard, and now there is a "hole" in their line of trees, so I worry about wind catching and taking down more. I do not remember wind ever being this bad! I told DH yesterday I thought we had hurricanes with less wind!

Yes here in the midAtlantic states it’s very windy, with downed trees and power outages.

Southeastern PA and we have been experiencing constant winds for the past week and a half. Right now the weather app says the winds are 20 miles an hour. It wouldn’t be so bad, if once in a while, we would get a break. We have also had down trees and objects being blown all over the place. Last night I heard thumping on my windows and I thought someone was knocking on them. Nope, just airborne things hitting the windows.

We've been having some major winds here in parts of Europe too. I was in London over the weekend, and Monday morning when I went out for one last walk before heading to the airport, I was afraid I was going to be blown off Westminster Bridge and into the Thames. It was also causing flight delays - my flight left London two hours late, due to the late arrival of the incoming flight. It had been delayed with take off due to wind speed and then had head winds, so the trip took longer than scheduled. My flight, on the other hand, was 20 minutes shorter than originally scheduled, due to tail winds. Here in Munich we had high winds yesterday afternoon, and they are kicking up again now (midday). A friend who lives a bit further north posted photos from his new home last night - a house across the road had lost half of its roof due to the wind and the fire brigade had closed the street due to repair work and risk of further damage.

Central Maryland and we are blowing away! We have the fire warnings as well.
I feel bad because a cousin & his family are in DC this week for their spring break and he said the wind is brutal. We're meeting them for dinner tonight and I told him we'd just blow towards the restaurant.

So four guys -- dad, two sons, and a friend -- just showed up to get the tree limb out of the neighbor's garage (the one I mentioned in my OP). Meanwhile, we have trees that are growing over the side of our house that I haven't paid attention to lately, until this wind. All last night I could hear them rubbing and banging on the roof and the window and I know if that continued that we'd get holes in the roof. So I went next door and asked them if they could do a small job after they were done (our house is only one level, and the trees are smaller ones like holly, etc., not big tall maples or oaks). The dad came over, took one look, said "sure". I asked how much and he said $30.00. omg... He started taking the branches down, then he noticed some more, took them down, climbed up on the fence, took more down, noticed more farther down, said he'd get those as long as he was there. Meanwhile the other three were hauling it all to the yard, cutting them all up into small pieces, and stacking it all neatly along the curb. When the dad came down off the fence I told him that it had been a bigger job than I realized and he had to let me pay him more than $30. He said no. I said yes and he said "okay $45". I gave him $50 because I didn't have a $5.00 and he mentioned giving me change! (which I didn't let him, of course). omg. Best $50 I've spent in a long time, and I would have paid more than that. We're going to hire them back for other work that needs to be done. My dh thinks he's coming home from work tonight to wrestle the long saw thingy up from the basement and try to chop off the worst offending branches. Instead he's going to pull up to a huge stack of cut branches. -- I know we'll both sleep well tonight because we won't be worrying about damage to the roof.

Peace of mind is priceless. We have had a lot of wind this year and I hope I don’t jinx it but we haven’t had it with the latest storm. A couple neighborhoods had road closures from so many downed trees. I am glad our current house doesn’t have to worry about them. I hope the wind calms down for everyone without more damage.

My DS lives in Petworth and has been talking about the windy weather. He has to walk his dogs as he lives in an apartment and is just dreading going out into the weather.
Here is N Texas, it's been windy today, but nothing like what I've been hearing of elsewhere.

Annapolis, MD here and we've been having a lot of wind too. It's been blowing around 20 mph today but it's supposed to die down later tonight. Tomorrow the highest the wind should get is 9 mph, and Friday we are looking at 13 mph. Saturday looks the same but Sunday we are looking at 15 mph. For myself we live in an old neighborhood, over 100 years old with lots of mature trees. I love that, what I don't love is that we still have the old above ground power lines. In stormy weather, and weather like this we always pray and cross our fingers too that we don't lose power. When our house was built about 30 years ago they actually moved the house back a bit to save a 125 year old oak tree that sits in the driveway. It's a gorgeous tree and we keep it healthy with regular professional tree care, but it does cause a bit of worry with really high winds. Also I hate it in the fall when the acorns drop on top of my 24 year old car-another reason not to bother getting a new one. Stay warm and safe everyone. The first day of Spring is Monday, March 20 this year.

Okay birukitty -- did you edit your post in the two seconds that I was going back to find it so I could quote and comment? or am I losing my mind? I swear you said "at least it isn't raining" and I was getting ready to say yes thank goodness it isn't! Because if it had been raining then that wind would have knocked down a whole lot more trees than it did because the ground would have been waterlogged. We also have above-the-ground power lines and we've had many power failures in the past due to trees/branches that come down on the wires.

Yes I did write "at least it isn't raining", but decide to change it because 1. I thought it sounded too flippant giving the seriousness of the subject and 2. The OP asked when the first day of Spring was, so I changed it. Sorry about that.

Amarillo, Tx is having winds of 30 mph and gusts up to 40-45 mph. This is pretty normal for us in the Spring months -- winds below 60mph barely get any attention.

Kansas here too..... I'm listening to our dispatchers, and the wind is so bad, they are barely making out what the officers are saying because the wind is so strong. That's concerning for sure!

Its been rough in Baltimore, MD also- although today seems to have calmed down quite a bit. The dogs haven't wanted to go on walks (and neither have I if I'm being honest.) we go out and almost get blown off the stoop Our building is 2 blocks from the water and it seems like it's coming straight in and beating us down. The plus is that with the row houses if you can find a street that is compact enough it calms it down a bit. I don't know how anyone will find their trashcans, we've been dodging them all week and after a few narrow misses we found a super skinny alley that blocks some of the wind. The power lines outside the house have been whipping around like crazy, I'm super impressed that we haven't lost power!

Nebraska. Super windy. We are expecting gusts from 40-50 mph.
Is there a state that does not have excessive wind? I am so tired of wind.

Well, we got the snow we were promised. It's always and of a jolt to go from sunny and calm to snowy and wind. Fifty degree temperature drop in less than 12 hours.

We also have above-the-ground power lines and we've had many power failures in the past due to trees/branches that come down on the wires. We did get the rain earlier today and the wind which isn’t awesome on top of all the snow we currently had on the ground. The rain makes the snow melt faster, but then there isn’t anywhere for all that water to go because the ground underneath is still all frozen as are all the storm sewers in the street so it just pools up wherever there is a low spot. Then it gets cold again like tonight and all that water turns to ice. I’ve chopped up and shoveled so much ice out of our driveway over the last couple weeks it’s insane, but I can’t just leave it there or I risk someone (likely ME) slipping and getting really hurt. And don’t even get me started on what the constant freeze/thaw/freeze is doing to the streets and highways here. So many huge freaking potholes the roads are all like cow paths. It’s bad.
