I went to the PO today after work to mail a package and some cards. I got my stamps and put them on and handed them over and the lady said, "These will each need two stamps, they are too wide." I said I didn't think so, and that they weren't thicker than the ones I sent last week and those did not need any extra postage. She huffed a bit and then said, "Well, I'll just go get the measuring device and I can show you they are too wide." I said ok, she came back and wouldn't you know, all the cards went through just fine. She tossed my cards in the bin and that was that. So if the PO tells you they need extra postage and you disagree, make them measure. I wish I could get one of those for home, lol. I told DH and he said I bet you could make one out of cardboard, so I am going to try!

I’ll add that I learned at Christmas that even if you “lose” and need two stamps, the second one can be an extra-ounce stamp at about half the cost. You don’t need a second first-class stamp.

A lot depends on the postal employee. I had one tell me that my cards each had to go each go as a PACKAGE.due to the thickness. They were store bought pop up cards that shouldn’t have been a problem. I didn’t know about their measuring tool back then, and she was really stubborn about it. Since then, I’ve made sure that none of my hand made cards are an issue.
It should be easy to make your own tool for measuring.
I have a red self-inking stamp that says “Non-machinable,” and make sure I use the non-machinable postage stamp, but even so, I’ve had at least one slightly thicker card get damaged because it was slightly thick. Once you turn over your card(s) to the post office, there is no guarantee they will treat it any different than a regular card, even if it does have the butterfly stamp, is marked “non-machinable,” and is supposed to be hand canceled.

I had a postal guy do that package thing to me as well. That was before I knew about the extra-ounce stamps, so I brought it home, threw a second 1st-class stamp on it, and threw it in the mailbox. I know that one made it to its destination.

A lot depends on the postal employee. Our local ladies are wonderful. When I hand them a card, they will drop it right onto the scale, then wriggle it through their little slot measure. If I come in with a stack of cards, they will spot check a few of them: if their selected cards "pass", they let them all go. If weight or size is over, they calculate the extra postage I need, not slap on a whole extra 1st class stamp.

All the folks I've encountered at both post offices in my home town are great. But there's one across the street from my office which is way more convenient most of the time. Except for the cranky, unhelpful clerk.

kmage Kristina Werner made a video of postage/mailing cards not too long ago. She has a couple of options for that postage slot thingie and somewhere around the middle of the video, a DIY option. K Werner video

My husband made me a piece of wood with a slot that is pretty accurate. If it’s a tight squeeze I still get them to check.
