We’ve been on vacation in a beach location this week and have had a wonderful time marred by just one thing: people smoking in public places where others are congregated. For example, on a crowded beach where people are sitting stationary and not just strolling by.
I get it. It’s outdoors. It’s not against the law. But being immediately downwind of a chain smoker puts a substantial damper on my enjoyment of the beach TBH. And I got there early to get a front row spot and paid for the chair/umbrella rental, so it’s not like I can move.
What do the peas think? Rude or not rude?

Yes, rude. Anywhere that a group of people are gathered, there should not be smoking. They have laws that say you have to be x feet away from a public enterance so that your smoke does not affect those entering, so it should be the same way on the beach; distance away from others!

I vote rude. If someone else has to smell it and can't easily move to an equally nice spot, then it's rude.

I don't think it's rude but I do really sympathise with you, especially as you couldn't move.
Eta, I’m assuming there are no legal restrictions.

My answer is colored by my asthma and reaction to cigarette smoke so I vote rude. It is inconsiderate to make other people smell your cigarettes, even outside. I also hate it when people play loud music on a beach or in a campground. I guess I am not very easy to be around.
I detest smoking. It not only endangers the smoker but also everyone around them by the second-hand smoke, even if the don’t have asthma or any allergies to it. I know it is difficult to quit. I once dated a guy who had overcome his drug addiction several years before I met him. He was a smoker and thought he was successfully hiding that fact from me. Uh, no you weren’t. I had to say something to him about how I could not have a future with a smoker due to my health issues. That is when he told me he successfully kicked drugs and alcohol, but cigarettes had an even stronger hold on him. He said he had tried numerous times and could leave them alone for a few months, but always picked them up again. I knew they were addicting, but more so than drugs? That was news to me and I sympathized with him. But I couldn’t continue to date him because of them, even if he left the area to smoke. He didn’t realize how it made his breath, clothing, hair, car, and everything smell so bad. It was a shame because he was a nice guy.
A friend once joke that she was going to walk up to a smoker and fart. If they make her smell their smoking habit, she would make them smell her farts. We got a great laugh from her comment but I doubt she would ever have the courage to follow through.

Totally rude. You're not supposed to smoke on the beaches in Gulf Shores, but they rarely enforce it. What's even more disgusting is you know they aren't putting their cigarette butts in the trash either, they're just leaving them there or putting them under a thin layer of sand which ends up in the ocean and kills animals there, too.

As an ex-smoker, Yes its very rude! and even outside I wish they would make smoking areas closed off from the rest of the world. Its one smell that even as a smoker I hated it and now its 1000 times worse for me!

I don't like businesses, that allow staff members to smoke right next to the enter and exit doors. It means a customer has to walk through the smoke to enter or exit the business.

Rude. My mom used to be really bad about this. As an example, when we were leaving a concert or other event as soon as she was out the door she would light up even though we would be walking with the crowd for half a mile or so. After years of talking to her about it she finally came around and is now a LOT more conscientious of where she smokes outside.

Rude. Period.
Nothing irks me more than having to walk through smoker's smoke to get to my destination.

I vote rude. My husband & I (both non-smokers) vacation yearly in Orange Beach/Gulf Shores with two couples and the husbands both smoke but they are more considerate when they are smoking. They move away from the group (any group) to smoke which I appreciate. They are also not allowed to smoke on the condo balcony or in the condo so they have to leave the condo when they want to smoke as well.
It's also so gross when you are at the beach and rent the chairs and then you see a pile of cigarettes buried in the sand next to you....yuck!

I'm on vacation now too and between cigarettes, cigars and weed, it's nasty. On the beach, by the pool, and on our balcony, I can smell it. Of course they're not supposed to be smoking in these areas but many are. Ick!

I detest smoking, but I can't say that it is rude. It is outside in a public place. If there are no restrictions it is their right. The beach we go to usually has very few smokers. When I am downwind from a smoker, I just move. That's not an easy option if you have setup a tent or umbrella but I just have a chair so it isn't such an issue for me.

It's rude. It's gross. I wish we could ban smoking in public completely. Stink up your house and keep your nasty trash in your house but don't make the rest of us smell you or deal with your nasty habit

If it’s legal, then smokers have a right to smoke. You don’t like it, move. OP can move. She chooses not to. Perhaps she should go to the concession where she rented her chairs and complain. Maybe they will tell the smokers to move or refund her chair rental.

I'm kind of torn on this one. As a non-smoker (reformed smoker), I hate the look of people smoking and I hate the smell of smoke. I would be really annoyed if I were sitting on the beach and kept getting second hand smoke in my face from the person near me.
But.
It's legal. They're outdoors. They're entitled to smoke there. There are so few places where a person can smoke now, I can understand why they'd think it's okay to do it outside like that.

Basic consideration is apparently too much to ask. It’s legal to let a door slam in someone’s face or refuse to give up my seat to a person with limited mobility, but I wouldn’t do those things. And no, I couldn’t move. By the time she lit up, all the available chairs were taken.

Yeah, I guess I hold myself to a higher standard for public behavior than just what is legal, and I wish others would do the same. Simple consideration for our fellow human beings is such an easy thing to do.

Since it’s not in violation of any laws or ordinances, my comfort is my responsibility. If it really bothered me, I would move, face a different direction or try to block the smoke in some manner (tilt the umbrella or something).

It's no more rude to smoke in public where it's allowed than it is to believe you have the right to dictate that others cannot do legal activities merely because you don't like them and/or you arrived first. If you don't like it, you have the option to move. (You could also nicely ask them to refrain or smoke elsewhere; some will, some won't.) I consider it like having a group park next to you that is loud and boisterous, playing loud music or playing games, running around where you're sitting or parking in front of you and obstructing your view of the water. All are allowed activities and if you don't like them, move or leave.
FWIW, not all smokers litter the beach with their butts just as not all beachgoers think they own the public beach. The people I know that smoked at the beach always carried out their butts, just like the rest of their trash. I, personally, can't stand seeing trash cans on beaches. Adults should be responsible enough to carry their trash out with them so as to not litter the beaches; the trash in and falling out of the trashcans is MUCH larger than cigarette butts and I've seen the gulls pick trash out of the cans and carry it off, dropping it in the sand or water.

Well, I'm a smoker. I do my best to not smoke around other people, but sometimes you can't. I'm also an environmentalist, and I would never leave my butts on the beach. I ALWAYS take them with me and find a garbage can, or take them with me when I leave. We were recently in Puerto Rico, and the smell of weed was way stronger than any cigarettes.

It’s beyond rude. When you do something that negatively affects other people against their consent, that’s rude regardless of whether it’s legal.
Smoking anything in public shouldn’t be legal anywhere.
