I see a Brother for 299 on Amazon. I like Brother because they say it is quiet, has auto depth blade, can scan your own image, and you don't have to join a club.
Any comments?

I have older one, not a dx w/the auto blade. I love my scan and cut, it can do so many things. I like the fact that if I really plan, I can put designs I want to use at a short crop on a flash drive, do a little editing on the machines screen, and not have to drag my laptop etc. I don't do that for weekend crops, I take my laptop. There are numerous programs you can design in.
The dx models are a lot quieter than the originals.
My biggest beef with brother is their mats. I personally loathe them. I don't think they hold up well in terms of staying sticky enough. There are a lot of work arounds for resticking etc., but my solution is to order Artistix mats from England. They hold up well. I have also taped cricut mats on top of my brother mats, but if you get the auto blade model that could affect it in terms of material depth, and it would affect the warranty if something goes wrong.
Blades are a little pricy IMO and I haven't found a good knockoff.
I don't regret purchasing it at all. I scrapbook, make cards, cut vinyl, and do some other paper crafty things.
ETA: I didn't even talk about the scan to cut feature, the fine detail it can cut with your stamped images or out of some patterned paper is amazing, you just have to make sure it has a closed path, I find with some stamps I just need to close a line with a pencil. I save a ton not buying dies to match my stamps.

My scan n cut is one purchase I will never regret buying. The scan to cut was the selling point for me since I detest fussy cutting. I’ve been stamping for a long time and so many stamps weren’t getting used simply because I didn’t want to have to fussy cut them. It is so nice to stamp, scan and let the machine do it for me and it’s paid for itself in what I saved not buying dies to match every stamp set I buy.
I agree with peanutterbutter, their mats aren’t the best but I just use a little painters tape of washi tape to hold the paper in place. I’m still using the original mat and blade and I’ve had mine for over three years.

I have the Scan N Cut CM350. I wouldn’t say it is quiet, but it’s not bad.
It cuts my stamped images quickly, which I like, but each stamped image does have to have a solid outline. If the outline is broken, it can cut my stamped image to shreds.

I too have a CM350. Love it!! It's not quiet. But I've mostly used it to cut vinyl here lately. It's easy to work with. And if you need help, there's a YouTube video that covers it, I'm sure.

If the outline is broken, it can cut my stamped image to shreds. Just draw a light pencil line to connect the outline and erase after cutting. I do this a lot with stamps that don’t have a solid outline.

Love mine! I bought refurbished on Amazon a few years ago and have had zero problems. Saves me money on dies that go with stamps! Especially images!

I've considered getting one for a number of years and haven't since I don't really have space for it. Certainly could make some at this point, especially since I do more stamping than scrapbooking and scanning and cutting out images would be a game changer.
I'm curious if I have a lot of cricut cartridges (never linked or used with cricut design space) and then a mix of downloaded cut files (mostly SC) and what I've purchased for my silhouette over the years, how easy is it to use them on the Scan n Cut? I think silhouette files would be easy, just would need them exported to my computer, right? Any way to capture them from the cricut cartridges and use them?

Yes, but it was previously mentioned, and I should have been more clear, but I mostly wanted Don to know what can happen if you don’t have a solid outline (or add an outline with pencil).

I don’t remember which one have, I’m too lazy to go look. I got it from Amazon last year and love it. Cuts great. It is not as loud as my cricut. I say buy it.

I have a older version and love mine. It really works well. I stamp images on a whole sheet and have it cut a bunch out. Then I put them with the stamp set so when I need some I have them ready to color and use.

i have a scan n cut 650dx that i bought used at the start of the pandemic. a brother authorized sewing store was selling it (someone traded theirs in to get one of the fancy $$$ disney models).
i really like the scan and cut capabilities. i had the old Cricut Expressions and Silhouette in the past and i never took to them. i really like the brother SNC. their Canvas Workspace is easy to use when designing your own shapes to cut. admittedly i don't use it for super fancy or intricate stuff but i like know there is the capability if i wanted to. i don't like that their mats are not readily available in regular box stores and they are are more $$ than the cricut mats. i'm glad my machine came with a bunch. i'm still on the same beat up mat that i started using from the bunch. i just use the wide Zip pen to add more adhesive and i'm ready to go. when i was starting out, i had the blade set too deep so i cut through the mat. i was too cheap to throw out the mat so i placed packing tape on the back of the mat and it was good to go!

Don, did you go ahead and buy it? You won’t regret it. I did buy it, but the $299 was for a lesser machine, so I paid $399 to Amazon. It was delivered yesterday. I unwrapped it and made a cut, but something happened, or I should say nothing happened. The mat and a piece of paper, that came with, went thru the machine and it looked like the blade was doing it's job, but nothing happened, not even a scratch on the paper. So I guess I'll take it to Portland and hopefully get some clue as to how I botched this.

Don, go sign up for the classes at Alanda Craft, they are an Australian based company, that will teach you in short video clips of how to use your new machine. They are not super expensive, and it will be worth your time, believe me! I had a Klick-n-Kut, from many years ago that was used by the sign making companies, then marketed to paper crafters. The software was impossible, and did not have the scan capabilities. There are also FB groups that you can check out for help too.
I used the Silhouette Design Store (use SVG versions!) for some of my purchased designs (great interactive cards), as well as etsy sometimes, when I can't find an image I like. Too lazy to design my own.
Have fun!

don Good for you! I'm glad you treated yourself to a nicer machine. I'm going to treat myself to a photo printer soon.

Bumping this thread for a question. Is it possible to put double sided adhesive tape on the back of a piece of cardstock and cutting out the images? I've done this with my metal dies. I use a paper piercer to remove the backing and it basically makes it a sticker. So then you don't have to mess with adhering some of the tiny pieces with glue.
I'm having arthritis issues. I'm hoping this will work.

I don't know, but it should be OK. I'll wait til somebody tries it.

It’s been too long since I set up my ScanNCut, and I haven’t had to change the blade, but it kind of seems that it’s like the Silhouette, in that the blade had to be locked into place. Otherwise, it’s going to be too loose to cut. I hope that makes sense.

The blade might not cut all the way through (depending on your settings) so it might be more like a "kiss cut" sticker but I know people use similar machines to make stickers to sell so it should be fine.

Did that resolve it? If not, did you check to see if they have a customer help line? I know that both Silhouette and Cricut both do. I don’t know when you are going to Portland (to a convention?), but if you are still waiting for help, there ought to be some type of troubleshooting help, at least online.
