Have we discussed this here in the recent timeframe?
All of these Rude threads got me wondering about this...
Edited for clarification:
I really meant no for yes and I'm not sure how to edit the poll so I'm going to re-add it!

Inconsiderate possibly, not rude.
And yes, probably we have discussed it relatively recently 😉

I am confused by your choices. You ask is it rude and the answer is “Yes - I paid for it”.
Anyways, I don’t think it is rude, unless the seat is broken and goes back too far. I expect the person in front of me to recline their seat if they want to. I like to put my seat back just a notch because it is more comfortable for my shortness. Otherwise, the head part of the seat makes me lean forward too much because it is pushing the top of my head forward.
ETA - I understand now. You are saying you paid for it as the person in back of the reclining seat!

I'm kind of confused by the poll - yes it's rude because you paid for what? I feel like you swapped the answers but maybe I'm missing something. Using the seat as designed by the airline is not rude. There are now many choices for non-reclining seats or barely reclining seats so you're more than welcome to choose one of those airlines if you don't want the person ahead of you reclining.

I think it is rude. When you recline, you are taking up precious inches of the space belonging to the person behind you. It isnt like the airlines are leaving tons of space between rows

I'm a little confused too. I do think it's inconsiderate. The airline did not design the recliner and personal space well. That's not a passenger's fault but it is the reality and everyone knows it. Like a lot of these "is this rude?"scenarios, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. A little consideration for others goes a long way, especially in uncomfortable situations. Like planes, drs offices, smoky places, etc.

I don’t think your statements after yes and no make sense.
Is it rude? Yes, I paid for it. It’s rude because you paid for it? What is it?

If it is so far back that it is bothering someone, you shouldn’t do it IMO.

I take my cues from the plane. If it's a red eye and just about everyone is reclined, then I'm going for it. In all other cases, I do not recline.

I'm not sure why that is even an option on planes. It takes up too much space for the person behind you. Or many I haven't been on many big planes.

Your poll makes zero sense.
I recline. If the airline industry didn't want you to recline the seats would not recline. If you don't fit, go buy a first class ticket.

I think it depends. Meal times, definitely don’t recline. Person in front reclines, then I need to recline otherwise their chair is in my face. Small child in front of you reclining chair then sitting forward to watch TV, definitely a no no! Reclining chair then standing up in aisle for a lot of the flight, definitely a no! Late flight, slight recline is OK.
I don’t think there is any right or wrong, I think people should look around them and see how their actions will affect others. I have back issues and need to recline my seat slightly as soon as I can. When food is served I straighten my seat even though it is very uncomfortable for me.

If the person in front of me does it I don’t have much choice but to do it as well. During the day it doesn’t seem to be much of an issue but in evening/night flights when the lights go off everyone seems to recline.

I figure the person in front of me is actually leaning forward in their seat and uncomfortable. When the person reclines, it give my upper body less space, but I don't need the upper body space as much as the need to recline my seat so when I recline back, I really don't go back that far since I feel like Im leaning forward anyway. If I want to recline, I'll usually see if the person behind me is already reclining and then I don't need to worry about it.

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. I think a person can recline some without being a total nuisance to the person behind them. At meal / snack time though, put your seat back up and don’t get up and down repeatedly so my tray table isn’t bobbing frantically. I will say though that if you’re in the seat just in front of the very last seat, then I think it’s pretty rude because that person behind you can’t move at all. They shouldn’t even put a row of seats where that back row of seats is.

I don't recline unless it's an international flight and the lights are turned off for passengers to sleep. I don't think it's rude to recline, but I do think it can be inconsiderate to recline on a short 1-2 hour flight. There are a lot of other behaviors on flights that I think are rude. Playing a video game or movie without headphones, talking loudly, not supervising your children, kicking the back of the seat, grabbing the seat in front of you to get up (older people excluded, of course), rewinding the sex scene in a movie over and over (yes a passenger did this on our flight back from Italy) are all examples of rude behavior I have experienced on flights.

This was discussed on the old board w/much vitriol, as you can imagine. BTW-I don't recline, but I don't begrudge those who do.

I only do if I am going to sleep. That said if the person in front of me reclines it's not a big deal to me at all. I would NEVER think of asking them not to; they paid for that seat and can recline if they choose to IMO. What I have a bigger issue with is when upon landing when people rush to the front to get off, and then you can't even get out of your seat. If you are short on time for your connecting flight; let the flight attendant know! I've been on a couple flights where they announced "we have 6 passengers who need to deplane first due to their connecting flight" and no one seemed to have an issue with that.

I haven’t experienced people rushing to the front upon landing. People usually stand up, get their bags from the overhead, wait by their row, and then each row leaves in order. People behind wait until the row in front has moved into the aisle. I do stand up when possible so I can stretch my legs, but I stay in my row until it is my turn.

I don't know how it can be considered rude to use the seat in the intended manner. If I'm tired I'm going to recline as far as I like. I might have been travelling for days and I'm exhausted. If that bothers you, complain to the airline that they put the seats too close together. Or pay to sit in a better spot. I've never been upset by the person in front reclining and have no problem using the tray.

For me, this is a hate the game not the player. The seats are made to recline and there’s a kind of domino effect when one person reclines, the person behind them might and so on down the line. I do think it’s rude to slam the seat back - go slowly or a heads up for the person in the next row would be nice. I’ve had devises fall off the tray and a drink slide back a little precariously.
I never fully recline but I’ll hit the button to release the seat so it’s not straight up. It’s not even noticeable compared to the seat next to me.
We always get extra leg room since DH is pretty tall so it’s not as bad as it could be.

Rude to recline immediately and stay that way the whole flight. Night flights, yep sure go for it. But meal time and during day flights it's grim to sit behind a reclined chair. Definitely check with the person behind you.

If I'm on a flight where I might nap or sleep, I'll recline.
This reminds me of YEARS ago when Lauren was adamant that no one recline their seats to the point where she purchased a device you wore on your knees to prevent the passenger in front of you from reclining. I'm not sure how that worked, but she would not be dissuaded.

No I don’t think it is rude at all . Is only about three inches if that! I can still easily stand up to exit the row to go to the bathroom or walk the for a few minutes.
What I have yet to figure is how does the tray stay level when the person in front of me reclines and doesn’t lose height or become annoying? And yet it is sti sturdy and I don’t feel crowded by it. If it does move an inch or two forward that’s not a big for me either!

Perhaps this varies by airline. We fly United and its affiliates pretty much exclusively, and I notice (a) that the seats recline very little and (b) recline in such a way that the only movement is near the top of the seat. Lauren's knee contraption wouldn't make a lick of difference. There's no difference in the position of the tray table or the lower part of the seat.
I don't personally recline on daytime flights, but I'm not bothered if the person in front of me does because of the way United's seats are made, I guess. It's a non-issue.

it's my seat and i'll recline if i want to!
i agree with most of what merge said.
people who are offended by recliners can kick rocks. i am using the seat as it was designed and there shouldn't be a problem with that.

I was ambivalent about this until I did a 14 hour flight. Your seat, your right, I did not do it much, as I don’t sleep well on flights anyways. But..... Guy in front of me reclined the ENTIRE 14 hours of that’s flight. Meals and all. Never adjusted his seat up until preparing to land. He did not sleep much of the flight, if any, and sat up on the edge of his seat (he was in a bulkhead seat, nothing in front of him) a lot of the time. It was awful and I will never recline my seat again. Ever. Just cannot stand the thought of doing that to someone else.
