My brother has been left the task of going through all my moms things and selling or giving stuff away. He has already sent a box of stuff to my sister and mine will be here on Monday. I am excited to see what is in the box that he choose for me to keep but I also know it is going to be really hard to see what is in the box.
I already have the ring she left me. I got that before I flew home. I decided after posting here and listening to responses to go ahead and have it sized right away so I can wear it.

Take your time. PLEASE.
I put all of my dad's things (died 2000) and then all my mom's things (died 2004) in a Rubbermaid box and waited one year to open.
My therapist said to wait the first year out before giving out "stuff" or selling stuff, as your emotions will not "rule" you so much AND you will be able to assess people who just want the stuff for selfish reasons.
Personally, I am a bit upset that I gave away some of my special china (yes, I collect china - expensive hobby) to my niece, especially now that I have a grand-daughter. However, my niece (is married) really enjoys the china and uses it as much as she can. Perhaps, when my dgd is grown up, she may not appreciate the good china as much. I still have "MY" good china and my real silverware so not all is lost.
Enjoy going thru the stuff, re-living memories but please, wait a while prior to dispensing of items.

I'm so excited for you. It will be emotional looking thru your Mom's things but it will (hopefully) bring you comfort and closure. And I agree, no tossing or giving away of anything for at least one year. I've set some things aside for my DD's when they are grown and the something I saved for them is something I might have thrown away at first. I've saved two of my FIL's favorite t-shirts (one for each DD): there are lots of scrapbook layouts with him in these shirts and I did not rewash them so they still have a faint scent of his cologne on them. There are other goodies too, like photos and jewelry: I'll be giving those to them at milestone moments in their lives.
Keep us posted when you get your box on Monday: this will be such a wonderful gift to treasure.

Thanks for telling me that. None of it will be disposed of in anyway. It is just a small box of stuff that I am sure I will keep forever.
