I voted that it wouldn't be banned. I'm on FB, Instagram, Twitter and Tik Tok. I enjoy Instagram and Tik Tok the most. But my FYP is mostly pleasant with lots of travel, funny animal videos, etc. This week has been a bit more news heavy with the protests in France. And of course today has been the massive tornado that hit last night. Politicians only seem to care when it hurts their bottom line. Why is it ok for FB and Instagram to steal all of our data and use it to their advantage, but not ok for Tik Tok? It wouldn't be because Mark Zuckerberg donates a crap ton of money to politicians, would it? And the argument that Tik tok is harmful to kids? You know what is more harmful? Mass school shootings. But by all means, let the politicians go after Tik tok and ignore the obvious. Let them continue to ignore all of the other things that are killing us. Off the top of my head I can't remember, was there a congressional hearing on the train derailment? China and the United States are not friends. Especially these days. Tik tok is wholly owned by a Chinese company. So IMO it is a legitimate concern that this Chinese company could be funneling information gathered on tik tok to the Chinese Government. And since the Chinese government is an authoritarian one it would not be out of the realm of possibility that the government could be demanding this information and tik tok is obliging. And if tik tok is funneling information about the users to the Chinese government what are they doing with it? Nothing good I would hazard a guess. The fact that tik tok is owned by a Chinese company is why I never signed up even though it seems that just about everyone has. If it is found that Facebook or Instagram is selling or giving user information to foreign countries like China then I will close my accounts with them. I'm not arguing that it's a company with ties to China. That's not my point. It's funny how politicians sit on their ass and do nothing about kids being killed in schools. By all means, US government, ignore the many other harmful things happening in this country. Let's focus on tik tok. And the government wouldn't do a thing about Facebook because Zuckerberg funnels so much money to politicians. By the way, there are plenty of other Chinese owned companies doing business in the U.S. Check your apps. You will be surprised what apps come from China.

You are all over the place with your argument against the Federal Government potentially banning TikTok. It’s like “you can’t tell that I can’t have TikTok”. And there was an article that I saw that more then a few agree with you. But I disagree. Right now one of the biggest sources of misinformation is social media. It is well documented that Russian Bot Farms used Facebook and twitter to spread misinformation before the last couple of elections. And it’s been extremely hard to rein in these US Companies about the content they allow to be posted on platforms and who’s posting it. I see a debate coming about what constituents Free Speech. Anyway.. As hard as it is with US Companies it’s doubly hard to rein in the content on platforms used by foreign companies as well as answering the question is the company providing user data to the country that the company is domiciled in?Especially when the company is domiciled in a country that is an enemy of the United States as China is. With China the chance TikTok’s owner is providing the Chinese Government with user data is real. You don’t see this as problem and that’s your choice. I do see it as a big problem so we are going to agree to disagree.

This potential ban has nothing to do with China. Yes, that's the red herring. But Meta is behind this. And money.
It's no coincidence that Meta came out this past week and said they would stop paying content creators for videos on FB and IG now. They think they've won.
But the hearings this week made Congress look stupid. And I actually think it played out well for TT. Chew was calm, cool and collected. Was making concessions on Americans user data, etc. Congress asked stupid questions like "does TT access our wifi". Idiots.
All the things wrong with this Country and this is what we're having hearings on. And don't think this is just about TT. If this passes, the Government can ban any app or website they want for virtually any reason. This is going after 1st Amendment, regardless of what you think about TT.
I think these hearings backfired on Congress. They're going to have a hard time banning it at this point. And I think ultimately Biden will veto if necessary. He may not understand TT, but his Team does. And frankly, the Democrats won't want to turn their backs on Gen Z. They are the fuck around and find out generation afterall.

They are ignoring a hell of a lot of problems in this country because it suits their needs or lobbyists have a hand in their pocket to get them to ignore problems. I see other problems that politicians don't give a damn about and that I have a problem with. You brought up Russian bots and the election. It still happens. Maybe congress should do something about that as well? I didn't listen to the entire hearing. Maybe they did address it. If they didn't, I'm not surprised.

This potential ban has nothing to do with China. Yes, that's the red herring. But Meta is behind this. And money. I heard this is only partially true. There is money behind the ban on TikTok, but apparently there are some senators or congressmen that have a lot of money invested in US social media companies like Meta. They are the ones that want TikTok banned since they can't control or invest in TikTok. Of course, I saw this on a twitter post that was on an IG story, so it is gone from my feed. But I'll try to find the post itself on Twitter.

They tried with Reels, but like someone upthread said, it's not even close to the same.

Given a choice, Gen Z will walk away from Facebook (they aren't really there anyway) Biden and the Democrats before giving up Tik Tok.
