Let me preface by saying I don’t wear makeup as a general rule. Mostly because anything even close to my eyes makes them itch horribly for days, even the hypoallergenic stuff. Also because I don’t usually wear it, I suck at applying it.
Anyway, I need to have some business photos taken next month. I’ve been waking up with huge dark circles around my eyes that really don’t look good. I’m not looking for anything dramatic. In fact what I want is just the opposite, something very natural looking just minus the dark circles, thinning/graying old lady eyebrows and uneven complexion. I’d rather not spend a bunch of money on makeup I’ll literally never use again, so I’m exploring my options to just have someone do my makeup for me. There is an Ulta not far from where I’m going for my photos so that’s an option. I don’t know what else is close to here where I could go the same day. If anyone has had their makeup done at a place like that, how did it go and what did it cost?
My BFF and one sister could help me if they lived close but they don’t, and I don’t have anyone else here that can really help with this. I’d rather not stress myself out by trying to muddle through by myself like I usually try to do, and I want these photos to look good. My friend suggested Photoshop but I don’t think that alone is the answer. I’m really out of my wheelhouse so any advice would be appreciated! TIA!

It sounds like you could use an independent makeup artist for a once off makeup application. It's very common to hire them for special events and many are independent around here. Do a search for makeup artists in your area and tell them what you described here as the look you are going for.

If you’re looking for a makeup artist, ask at your hair salon. They often work together for weddings/proms and other special occasions.

I would hire a makeup artist too. I used one for my 50th birthday photo shoot and I loved the look she gave me.

I had my makeup done at Ulta for a wedding out of town. I rarely wear makeup because of the irritations it causes me. Everything they were able to use worked out great and nothing melted off at the outdoor 80 degree wedding and reception. Nothing bothered my face the whole time or after removal. The makeup artist I had knew I had very sensitive skin and issues, so she worked it out with a variety of items. I appreciated the fact they have EVERYTHING at their disposal, not just one brand, so she mixed and matched everything.

If you are going the Ulta route, I suggest getting it done before the photo shoot day just to see if you like it. I had a friend get hers done at Sephora before an event and as she likes to tell it she looked like a clown! It wasn't that bad, but it was, let's say .....different!!

I want to prepare myself for the sticker shock, LOL. ETA: I looked on their website for more information but they want me to enter a bunch of contact information first and I’d rather not do that. I went there back in 2019 to get my eyebrows waxed and the barrage of emails I’d gotten since makes me hesitate to opt back in to all of that.

If you’re looking for a makeup artist, ask at your hair salon. They often work together for weddings/proms and other special occasions. I finally went to make an appointment to get a haircut after putting it off for way too long, only to discover the guy I had been going to for close to 20 years closed up shop and is nowhere to be found. 😳 So I looked for some local referrals on NextDoor and found someone 20 minutes away who would cut my hair for about the same as what I had been paying ($50 for a basic cut plus tip). She did a decent job for the most part, but said that she is moving to another place next month that’s even further away. 😫 Anyway, my point is, anyone she would refer would likely be close to where she is, which is at least 40 minutes away from where I will be for my pictures, so I didn’t even ask. Based on my previous experiences, I figure I have about 30-45 minutes tops before my eyes start itching and watering, so the closer I am to the photographer once whoever is done with the makeup the better. The Ulta I’m thinking of going to is less than five miles from the photographer, which was why I thought it might be a good option.

It would really depend on the cost. I really hate wearing makeup plus I’m kind of cheap thrifty, so I would literally be having it done only to go home and wash it all off immediately. I would hesitate to go to Sephora because it’s further away and probably way more $$$ to have it done there than at Ulta.

This was in 2018 in Chattanooga,TN but I was think they are pretty much the standard price everywhere. Also as a side note she had me checking the whole time if everything was ok. She had done my eyebrows way to dark and I was able to have it corrected before she got too far. I was able yo tell her I didn’t want a lot of makeup I just wanted my old face to look nice for the event. So it was all light coverage and very nicely done

So I just looked at the app since I had a blowout on my Hair last year there I can see the prices and the prices for makeup here in Akron Ohio range from 45-60. So the 50 seems normal

One advantage in going to Ulta instead of an independent makeup artist is that Ulta will have a wider variety of products available - and with your sensitivities, that could be crucial.
It wouldn’t hurt to just call them and ask some questions, and explain your needs.

Actually, this is a good suggestion for another reason, as well. There is a the possibility that you could have a sensitivity or allergic reaction to the products used on you. If you plan to do photos afterward, you don't want to be experiencing an adverse reaction.

Don't use mascara with propolis (cera alba, beeswax glue), which most mascaras/eye liners contain this ingredient and may irritate your eyes. I suggest using a tube mascara. Also EOS and Burt's Bee lip balm contains propolis, so organic or sensitive label marketing doesn't mean that the products are safe. You should figure out what makes your sensitivity and avoid those products. I don't think going into this photo shoot blind without trying the products beforehand is a good idea, because what if you have blotchy, irritated skin. Ulta has reps that could help with picking out products to try before buying, as well as department stores. You could even go to a dept. store for a makeover and usually doesn't cost anything or minimal, because they are trying to sell you their product, especially treatment for under eye cream. You're not obligated to buy. Also, it's an investment of skin products to make you feel powerful and fabulous, which I myself, have neglected.

It’s right next door to the Target I usually go to, so I’ll probably just stop in and talk to someone the next time I’m over that way.

Also depends on how good the business photographer is. You can have the best makeup, but if lighting, background, time of day, indoors, outdoors, clothes' color selection is not quite right... but being prepared is best and asking questions. You can do it!

I’m pretty sure I’ll have a reaction no matter what because in the past I always have, even with supposedly hypoallergenic stuff. Typically it’s okay at first, with my eyes just getting itchy which I can deal with. It’s usually the *next* day after I take all the stuff off when things tend to be worse. The next day my eyes get really sticky and I want to scratch my eyeballs right out. I generally only subject myself to it when I really feel I have to, LOL.

I don’t usually have a lot of issues with my skin thankfully. It’s itchy, watery eyes that get goopy later that day and the next day that’s the primary problem. I really don’t want to buy anything because I honestly will not ever use it again. When we went on our cruise in 2019 for our anniversary, I think I must have spent $50-60 on makeup because everything I already had was ancient. I used it once for the formal photo night and let’s just say it didn’t go well, mostly because I was really rushed with needing to get my kid dressed and ready in addition to myself, plus having no room in the tiny coffin like cruise ship bathroom that was being used by three people getting ready at the same time. Good times, good times. The pictures were terrible. 😕 Needless to say, all that stuff I bought in 2019 is still in the bathroom cabinet at home and I haven’t used any of it since. It was such a waste. I would have been better off checking to see if there was someone on the ship that could have done it for me. I would have been a lot more relaxed and it would have looked 1000% better than what I did myself. Experience is what you get when you didn’t get what you wanted.

You can do it! I’ve seen some of the photos she has done and she’s pretty solid. I bought some photos that she took of my DD and her friends from a recent school dance and they’re nice. (Well, as nice as can be expected with a bunch of goofy middle school kids cutting up as the subjects, LOL.) I don’t think she’s as awesome as our longtime family photographer who is truly amazing, but she’s good. He moved out of state when he semi-retired 8-9 years ago so sadly that’s not an option. We’re doing them at her home/studio, indoors, and at the time of day she recommended because she knows her spaces and equipment. I didn’t want them done at my house because I don’t have any areas that have consistently good lighting. I had a lengthy conversation with her when we set up the appointment, so I think she has a good idea of what I’m looking for. At least I hope so! 🤞

I don’t know if they still do this, but Ulta used to give out samples of foundation, etc. If they still do that, you could have them do your makeup, ask for a sample and not have to buy a huge bottle of fountain. I have sensitive skin and use Tarte foundation. They have a tape shape foundation in a smaller size for $12-14. Also, some Target’s carry Ulta products. Good luck!

The Target I go to does sell Ulta stuff (which is weird because the actual Ulta store is literally two doors down). My biggest issue is that I suck at doing makeup, thus the need to have someone who knows what they’re doing do it, LOL.
