I wonder if there are conservative homeschoolers in MO who will regret the loss of their public library. And if perhaps they’ll vote differently in the future.

I hadn’t even thought of that negative consequence yet. I just feel so disheartened by the direction of our country now.

A newly appointed Missouri AG and his views for banning all transgender medical treatments adults and children... But protecting kids from guns is at the bottom of the list. "Protecting kids is always worth the effort, and we need to get creative and use every legal recourse we have available to us to stand up and protect kids from this kind of predatory left-wing ideology masquerading as medicine,” he tweeted. In his exclusive Breitbart interview, Bailey said: “We’re on offense on all fronts,” against gender-affirming treatment. “We marshaled state resources, we’re looking at licensure penalties, we’re looking at Medicaid fraud penalties. We’re looking at consumer protection issues.” “We’re not finished yet … this is a multifaceted, multi-pronged approach. … It’s worth doing because kids are worth protecting,” Bailey added. Also in March, Missouri’s St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported: “World’s leading transgender health experts attack regulations planned by Missouri AG.” “Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey’s proposed rules [on transgender medical care] are ‘based upon manipulated statistics, flawed reports, and incomplete data, and prevents the provision of medically-necessary care,’ read a statement from the World Professional Association for Transgender Health,” the Post-Dispatch reported. “The association is made up of nearly 3,000 providers and researchers who care for and study transgender and gender-diverse people across the globe in order to provide the best care.” AG Bailey has continued to promote his attacks on transgender Missourians – and promote himself – as recently as Wednesday morning, in an announced interview with far-right and publicly censured former Trump attorney Jenna Ellis, on her American Family Radio show. AFR is the “broadcast ministry” of the American Family Association, which appears on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of anti-LGBTQ hate groups. AG Bailey, in fact, is very comfortable promoting his attacks on transgender Missourians, and himself. After being appointed as Attorney General in January, Bailey must run for and win election next year to keep his job. On Monday, Bailey posted a well-produced video highlighting tweets praising his actions, some including against transgender people. “I’m passionate about defending the Constitution, upholding the rule of law, and protecting the liberties of the people of the state of Missouri.I’m proud of the successes we’ve had in my first one hundred days, and I’m excited to see all this office will achieve moving forward,” he wrote. Among those tweets he chose to include are messages from the Family Research Council, which also appears on the Southern Poverty Law Center’s list of anti-LGBTQ hate groups, and FRC’s president, Tony Perkins. Also, the far-right extremist group Moms for Liberty. On Tuesday, a social media post by an author and theology and culture scholar drew a great deal of attention. “Missouri now has a page where people can report trans individuals and the people who help them to the state,” David W. Congdon wrote, adding, “I hate this place.” He included a screenshot from AG Bailey’s “Transgender Center Concerns Form.” “Complete this form to submit a complaint or concern about gender transition intervention you have experienced or observed in Missouri,” Bailey’s form reads. “Please complete this form in as much detail as possible.” There has been great outrage over the form, which requires no proof, no identity check, not even a “Captcha,” as some on social media noted. “This is sick…wtf” noted journalist Yashar Ali. “Across the U.S., states increasingly are acting like fascist theocracies. If you think they’ll stop at trans people, you think wrong,” tweeted Ashton Pittman, news editor for the Mississippi Free Press. “I’m not sure how many steps into the ‘first they came for…’ poem we’re into, but fuck this absolute nonsense,” wrote journalist Matt Novak. Jeff Sharlet, author of “The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power,” and “C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy,” which led to his Netflix series, “The Family,” simply tweeted, “Under his eye,” a reference to “The Handmaid’s Tale.” “If Republicans want to dodge the ‘Nazi’ allegations, maybe they shouldn’t have a form urging people to report queers to the state,” wrote actor Abe Goldfarb. “This is awful,” wrote journalist Richelle Carey. Author and researcher Jason Colavito: “As godawful as this is, it’s pretty much exactly what Republicans did in the 1950s when they established homosexual snitch lines for spying neighbors to call in tips about suspected gay people so they could be prosecuted.” Here are a few more responses via Twitter: “The Nazis also created methods to monitor and control social behavior…” “This is Nazi shit. If you think they’ll just stop there, you’re insane. It’s time to flee.” “everyone go spam the shit out of this form…” “the supreme court making it legal to offer bounties for snitching leads to this, where everyone is a potential informant and nobody trusts anyone near them, only the state. it’s fascism incarnate, and it’s why the “culture war” is an essential part of the conservative project.” www.rawstory.com/under-his-eye-outrage-swells-over-missouri-ags-transgender-complaint-or-concern-online-form-2659880825/

Missouri was my home state as well. This is just so sad. I still have tons of ties to the state (friends and family) that I can't say I won't visit. In fact going to see Billy Joel there in August in KC. I don't know what is worse Florida or Missouri. And I have ties to stupid Florida too. My sister lives there. She laughs and says she is a prisoner of the state at this point. She hates it there so much.

And Missouri has this gem, josh Hawley 'insurectionist' agitater!! Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) marked the Fourth of July by tweeting theocratic propaganda through a fake quote incorrectly attributed to founding father Patrick Henry — and there's a dark implication to why he did it, wrote MSNBC's Steve Benen. “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ,” stated the quote Hawley posted. “For this very reason, peoples of other faiths have been afforded asylum, prosperity, and freedom of worship here.” In reality, Henry never said that. This quote was falsely attributed to him in a 1956 article from The Virginian, an anti-Semitic and white nationalist magazine, and was later picked up by similarly racist publications like The American Mercury. On the surface, it’s obviously unfortunate to see a senator — a graduate of Stanford and Yale — make a mistake like this, especially as so many other Republicans also fall for fake quotes," wrote Benen. "But let’s not brush past the underlying point the Missouri Republican was trying to make by way of a made-up line: Hawley seems certain that the United States was founded as a Christian nation, with members of one faith tradition — his own — enjoying exalted status over others." The historical record also shows multiple quotes that contradict Hawley's belief that America was founded as a Christianity-first nation. In the 1797 Treaty of Tripoli ending war between the United States and the Barbary pirates, John Adams wrote, "The government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion." Thomas Jefferson — who was as bitter an ideological rival to Adams as modern-day Democrats are to Republicans — agreed, writing, "Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law," and saying the First Amendment establishes “a wall of separation between church and state.” This is not the first time Hawley has come under fire for rewriting history. On Juneteenth, he proclaimed that "Christianity is the faith and America is the place slavery came to die," overlooking that Christians were on both sides of the Civil War and certain Christian sects were founded explicitly for the preservation of slavery. www.rawstory.com/josh-hawley-2662228921/

Bumping this thread for this gem now that the candidates can officially file: Holy fucking hell, I’m so glad I refused to move to the Missouri side of the bi-state area I live in. I may be in a red pocket of Illinois but at least we’re governed as a blue state Only an honorary member of the KKK. Yes, that certainly makes it all better, especially after stating he’s a pro white man

Continuing to keep my list of who NOT to vote for.
It's been interesting to see the reaction from the Chiefs rally shooting around gun control and how it's been hamstrung by state government. Lots of we'd love to do more but we keep getting voted down. Our current governor was actively boo'ed when he spoke (pre-shooting) at the rally.

I had to stop reading because so many have not even touched the issue since they know the 2A crowd will surge on them, even if they wanted to. I mean, you can't even make a commercial without those assholes having a hissy fit. They sure don't mind the Government being in charge of things when it suits them. Missouri has had a Conservative super majority for over 20 years, I hope that changes in November.

WTF? How is a teacher supposed to force someone else’s kid to wear certain clothes or have a certain haircut? That’s just mind blowing. So does that mean all the long hair white hockey kids are going to have to chop off their mullets?

It always cracks me up that Conservatives have an issue with boys having long hair... when their supposed FAVORITE DUDE has long hair! I mean, if Jesus can have long hair, why can't everyone? They're morons.

In other news, the Governor of Missouri (who also chooses 4/5 KC Board of Police Commissions, at his pleasure) has stepped in to help a drunk driver who injured a 5 year old girl while under the influence. What happened to "law and order"? Guess it doesn't matter when he's the son of someone important to your state. Sentence commuted by governor.

What happened to "law and order"? Guess it doesn't matter when he's the son of someone important to your state. Sentence commuted by governor. That’s behind a paywall for me. Here’s a free story: www.espn.com/espn/story/_/id/39633435/gov-commutes-prison-sentence-ex-chiefs-asst-britt-reid#This part of the governor’s reasoning says it all: he indicates that Reid already “has served more prison time than most individuals convicted of similar offenses.” He had served just over a year. The reason our politicians won’t toughen drunk driving sentences is because they can too easily see themselves, their families, and their wealthy donors ending up having to serve serious time. As I testified at the sentencing hearing for the boater who killed my parents, “he murdered them with his willful actions as surely as if he had stood on the boat and sprayed bullets at the shore.” Still, the judge in Sarpy County, NE, only saw fit to sentence him to 6-20 years for killing two people. He ended up serving 7 years. He now lives back at his lakeside home with his family. Drunk driving is the easiest way to get away with murder in a manner of speaking. Officials don’t crack down because they don’t want to ruin the lives of “good people” - good people being those who look and think like them. 168,000 people were killed by drunk drivers in the US last year. 48,000 were killed by gun violence. But what is one party focusing on? Undocumented immigrants. Make it make sense.

Super important for teachers to be tasked with enforcing arbitrary and shifting ideas of gender presentation. Guess those girls better wear spaghetti straps and miniskirts so we can make sure they are presenting as properly female.

Oh and this gem: The word cult has been overused IMO, but in this case, it qualifies. I just saw a video of Trump at his rally yesterday referring to Obama as president instead of Putin. But you aren’t seeing much of that in the media. I am very close to cancelling my subscription to the NYT.

There's been all sorts of crazy still going on in Missouri, but I wanted to bump this thread with some GOOD NEWS:
I was told when they overturned Roe that "it should be up to the states" and then multiple states, MO included, outright banned abortion. The states who did put it up for vote have STILL been fighting for those protections while Conservative lawmakers try to go around the will of the people. Keep fighting the minority.

I'm so sorry about your parents Merge and absolutely on point about their political/personal reasons. I'm very sorry about your parents too, and your post brought up some very important key points. I had no idea 168,000 people were killed by drunk drivers last year compared to 48,000 killed by gun violence. Of course neither is acceptable in any way, but I agree with you. The laws need to be changed to include much stiffer penalties for drunk driving. Right now it's barely a slap on the wrist.
