Missouri House votes to strip state funding from public libraries. Republican House Budget Chairman Cody Smith last week cut the roughly $4.5 million in public library funding from the budget, citing a lawsuit by two library groups to overturn a new Missouri law that bans sexually explicit material in school libraries. The law, passed last year, does not apply to written descriptions of sex or sexual acts; only photos, drawings, videos and other visual depictions are prohibited. Librarians and other school officials face up to a year in jail or a $2,000 fine for violating the policy, which makes it a crime to provide minors with sexually explicit visual material. Exceptions are provided for works of art, science classes, and other educational courses. www.kmov.com/2023/03/29/missouri-house-votes-strip-state-funding-public-libraries/I hate this state more and more š”

Crazy. Libraries provide so much more than just a few books too. Ours have tutors daily during the school year. Provide computers and wifi, some classes, story time. So disgusting letās keep them ignorant š¤¦āāļø

So, wait. Theyāre punishing public libraries because theyāre mad at school libraries? Totally makes sense.

So, wait. Theyāre punishing public libraries because theyāre mad at school libraries? Totally makes sense. I think they were mad a librarian used their own funds to buy books for one public library So they punished them all! ETA - I misspoke about actually buying books, they used their own funds to sue the state.

I am truly ashamed of my home state, and as much as I'm glad I don't live there, Kansas is just as full of right-wing nut jobs.

What in the everloving fudge nuggets of foolishness. Crossing out Missouri for future visits for the time being. I feel badly for the children and reasonable people of the state.

That is awful. I don't know how I would have gotten through my growing-up years without a library (my parents didn't have money to buy books and didn't think they were that important anyway, and they were absolutely my life raft).

I agree. I got to the scholastic book order, but I could only spend a dollar. That was one book. (I'm old). I went to the library all the time. Both the school and our small town library. It was a godsend.

Same. This makes me so mad my head is about to explode. And criminally charging librarians?!? My DD is about to start a librarianship program and I guess we're going to have to research what stupid laws have passed in every state once she graduates and starts job hunting.

They donāt care because none of this is being done in good faith or with any intention of helping anyone or improving anything. Itās all about exerting crushing control. When other peas have expressed skepticism that hormonal birth control would ever be outlawed, I submit that no one imagined defunding libraries would happen, either. It doesnāt make sense and itās for no oneās good, but it is a lever of control. This is the logical and completely predictable result of voting Republican since they dedicated themselves to using any and all means to stay in power and used the guise of āChristianā nationalism to tie up the evangelical vote. The only way to reverse any of this is for people to stop voting Republican.

Wow. I am at a loss for words reading this. Missouri is the state a bunch of my close relatives want to move to and I am horrified at the thought that I might wind up there someday caring for elderly family members. They also like Kansas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. I feel so doomed.

I couldnāt believe that either! I live downtown St. Louis and for awhile there was a group of 5-6 boys that looked about 13-14 walking around with guns out and at least one automatic rifle (I believe, I donāt know guns).

What in the everloving fudge nuggets of foolishness. Crossing out Missouri for future visits for the time being. I feel badly for the children and reasonable people of the state. Yep. Was looking at going Memorial Day weekend for a highway sale. Not anymore. Craighead County AR recently voted to reduce funding for their libraries. A friend of mine, a LGBTQIA poet who is also Asian, recently had a book of hers banned for a short amount of time at the same library. Am I surprised this happened in Arkansas? No. Am I surprised it was this county first? Yes. It's a booming college town. Then again, Conway is in the news for all the wrong reasons. Conway is a booming college town with 3 colleges. One is public, one is a private liberal arts college, another is a private Baptist affiliated college.

So on the one hand you've got the Missouri State House that is voting to strip roughly $4.5 million in public library funding from the budget (which will result in most of those public libraries being forced to close) and on the other hand you've got children as young as 14 walking around in public legally carrying guns including AR-15's! What the actual F indeed!
I tell you I don't recognize this country anymore. This is completely insane!
I don't know what I'd do without my local public library. I read every single day. It's like an addiction with me. I'm at my local public library at least once a week and out of the 120 books I read last year all of them came from my local public library except for one or two which came from my bookshelves. It's been said that reading fiction builds empathy. Something the Republican Party is sorely lacking.

Missouri is the state a bunch of my close relatives want to move to and I am horrified at the thought that I might wind up there someday caring for elderly family members. They also like Kansas, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. I feel so doomed. Eureka Springs AR is the outlier in Arkansas. Several MAGAs have commented they refuse to go there anymore because of how 'woke' it is now. A friend, who is LGBTQIA+, has said it is the one place in the state he feels totally safe to be him. The bigger towns have pockets of that. I just wish the entire state was like that. I don't have the resources or health to move out of state right now. There are several like me. I love this state but FFS it's maddenig.

I would like to know exactly what "sexually explicit" material libraries are providing to CHILDREN.
And when libraries push back against this law, asking for CLARIFICATION... they lose all their funding. So now adults can't access fiction books or e-books, seniors can't go read the paper and socialize, students can't study.
You know what is required to have a free democracy? FREE ACCESS TO INFORMATION which is what libraries provide.
So when the libraries fight back these @(#&@#!! just remove all funding.
I just can't. I just cant EVEN.

Also! As an adult with no children who uses PUBLIC libraries but never accesses school libraries - this pisses me off. So much.
