A former Republican candidate for Georgia governor recently elected as a district-level GOP chair is now pushing conspiracy theories that the Earth is flat, reported Rolling Stone on Wednesday.

Kandiss Taylor is best known for her campaign touring Georgia in a bus that said "Jesus, Guns, Babies."

"In an interview with David Weiss (AKA 'Flat Earth Dave') and Matt Long on her 'Jesus, Guns, and Babies' podcast, Taylor and her guests discussed biblical 'evidence' that the Earth is actually flat as a pancake. 'The people that defend the globe don’t know anything about the globe,' said Weiss. 'If they knew a tenth of what Matt and I know about the globe they would be Flat Earthers,'" reported Nikki McCann Ramirez. "'All the globes, everywhere' Taylor said later in the discussion. 'I turn on the TV, there’s globes in the background … Everywhere there’s globes. You see them all the time, it’s constant. My children will be like ‘Mama, globe, globe, globe, globe’ — they’re everywhere.'"

There are several variants of the Flat Earth conspiracy theory, but the most common idea is that Earth is a disk, with the North Pole in the center, and Antarctica as a giant wall of ice along the "edge," and the Sun and Moon as small objects rotating in circles above the plane.

It is trivially simple to prove the Earth is spherical in a variety of ways, from observing ocean-faring ships disappear below the horizon with any decent pair of binoculars, to observing the way the Sun, Moon, and stars move across the sky, which would not be possible if they were simply above a flat plane. Gravity, likewise, wouldn't make any sense without a spherical Earth, because then there would be no center of mass that affects everyone at all points of the Earth's surface.

For Taylor, however, the mere fact that the globe is a popular image is proof that there's some unspecified "conspiracy" of people forcing globes onto others.

Mother who called out Amanda Gorman's poem/book DH is a proud boy...

The Florida parent behind the ban of Amanda Gorman’s poetry book ban has ties to the Proud Boys and the ultraconservative Moms For Liberty, The Daily Beast reports.

The Miami Lakes (Miami-Dade County) school also pulled two other books (“The ABCs of Black History” and “Love to Langston”) from its elementary school shelves after Salinas complained about them, as well.

Salinas, who has two children at the school, is the only parent who complained about the books, according to the report. Salinas cited critical race theory, gender ideology, and indoctrination as the reasons she believed the books to be inappropriate.

“Is not educational and have indirectly hate messages,” she wrote in her complaint about “The Hill We Climb.”

Legislators in Wisconsin, Ohio and Iowa are actively considering relaxing child labor laws to address worker shortages. Employers have struggled to fill open positions after a spike in retirements, deaths and illnesses from COVID-19, decreases in legal immigration and other factors.

Wisconsin lawmakers back a proposal to allow 14-year-olds to serve alcohol in bars and restaurants. If passed, Wisconsin would have the lowest such limit nationwide, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

The U.S. Supreme Court's right-wing majority on Thursday severely curtailed protections for "waters of the United States."

The decision in Sackett v. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is "unanimous in result but very split in reasoning," explainedSlate's Mark Joseph Stern. "The upshot of Sackett is that, by a 5–4 vote, the Supreme Court dramatically narrows" which wetlands are covered by the Clean Water Act (CWA).

The majority opinion—authored by Justice Samuel Alito and joined by all of the court's other right-wing members except Justice Brett Kavanaugh—concludes that the CWA only applies to wetlands with "a continuous surface connection" to larger bodies of water, excluding those that are "adjacent."

Earthjusticedeclared in response to the ruling that "this is a catastrophic loss for water protections across the country and a win for big polluters, putting our communities, public health, and local ecosystems in danger."

in other news, the supreme court made a decision I can agree with (unusual I know). a elderly woman's property was seized due to back taxes and was sold for more than the owed money. the court ruled that the govt can not keep that "extra funds" and must give to the woman the excess profit over what she owed.
