Oh I think I hit the motherload. On a program that I work on had so many rules, it took me a hot minute to get one to stick. No dictionary words. No letters that are in your login name No same letter/number over three times Must contain upper/under letters Must have a symbol Must be at least 12 characters long
I think that was all the rules. Almost broke my brain... HAHAHA

no dictionary words? OMG!
I have a hard time coming up with work passwords. I can do all but the no dictionary words. Yes, I know the trick of putting in a number in the place of a letter but damn man.
here's how my current one for work (that I just got notification that I have to change) stacks up... has dictionary words has 3 letters in common with my first/last name does NOT have the same letter/number more than 3 times (It has one letter 3 times since it's a phrase) has upper and lowers has a symbol is 16 characters
off to come up with a new one and then save it on all the devices (touch ID on my MacBook for school and all my personal devices) and write it down so I don't forget it.

OMG! #2, really?!!
I think I have one password that has to be between 12-18 characters long. That was hard enough. But these rules, yikes!

I do that thing you are not supposed to do.. I have a book of passwords. That little book is my LIFE. It is ALWAYS with me, like my wallet. I don't let it out of my sight.

I make up a sentence about something that I experienced or remember, and use the first letters from each word. Does everyone else do this?

I have a page I created in the back of my lesson plan book that has all my passwords/logins written down. My secretary knows where to find them if she needs to get into any of my school related stuff. I don't use those passwords for personal stuff. I have shared/printed that page many times for students and other teachers because it's just handy to have. I print/bind my own plan book so it's easy to just add in pages as needed.

Use a secure password manager like 1Password. Problem solved, and your accounts are far safer.

That’s crazy. I have so many passwords for all my work programs and they regularly need to be changed so I have the cheat book, too. I took a class on cyber security for work and past of it was about passwords and it stated that the safest password is actually a phrase - so take that “no dictionary words” 😂

So, “cat” and “dog” become “catdog” which is not in the dictionary.

Omg. Please don't let my school district hear about this. It's annoying enough that they make us change the password every couple of months. So I just use the same root word and then count up for the number at the end. Like "rootword1" then "rootword2" then "rootword3" etc. The only problem comes with remembering what number I'm up to. haha I may or may not have used "stupidpasswords" as a password on one site or another. Or "stupidpasswords!" if I needed a symbol.

That would have worked with my system, other than using a letter in my login would have required a bit of creative work. I make my own passwords and the software always tells me I chose an extra hard one and it accepts it. Long ago I started using both upper and lower and adding the same symbol to every password since more and more sites were asking for it. To be honest, part of it stays the same for every password and part always changes. I write down the part that changes because at my age, I never know what will have escaped my brain while I slept. 😴 🤔
I log them into my master list alphabetically by site.
So say this is my password:
TWOPEAikbnfrtm&
To break it down, TWOPEA (The site, always uppercase) Next is ikbnfrtm, the combination of letters (this will always be lower case letters and never changes but means something to me) &, and the final is the symbol that never changes
And in my master password log, it would look like this:
Twopeasrefugees board: TWOPEA ~
That tells me that TWOPEA is the site The ~ stands for the part that never changes and is never written down.
So if anyone got into my computer and found my list, it wouldn’t help them since they need the rest of the password that is only in my head.
I would just have to be careful not to describe the site with any letter in my login name.
I find it best to have a system that is always used that can’t be figured out. I have had to refer to my master list hundreds of times and as long as I can get those first uppercase letters in the right order, I know the rest. Clear as mud?

The passwords I hate the most are for the business bank we use for our rental house. I can never remember what it is because OMG, they make you change the damn thing constantly. It can’t be anything you’ve ever used before plus a bunch of other rules. I freaking hate it. I really do like the process Lexica described, my issue is that I also have to remember passwords that DH makes up/ uses and he’s not really all that great about following systems like that!

I do the same almost as Lexica... i use the 1st 4 letters of the website.. so for me this is prob for proboards... or amaz for amazon or ebay for ebay... lol the 2nd letter is capital... then the rest is the same for everything my own version of $cat345#... its the easiest way for me to remember all the random websites.... My banking websites have a whole different set up.. but basic premise... Work however!!!!! Needs to be changed every 60 days.... ive worked there for 23 years... it has to be the basic 8 letters/numbers 1 capital and 1 symbol.... so i literally just input across the keyboard Qwer123 and shift 4.... so whatever the symbol above 4 is... then go to Tyui567 and whatever the symbol anove 8 is... i just pick another 4 letters and 4 numbers in a row each time.... doesnt take me long to memorize because our screens go to lock after 3 minutes... so you have to re login... and i use several different programs at work that i need to log into... even just to clock in and out... Passwords!!!! Blahhhh who wouldve thought

oh girl, I hate that so much! I use a program that has pissed me off so much I've used swear words at it for passwords. Like 'fifteentriesyoumfer' However, yours takes the cake since you can't even use dictionary words? I mean I get the reason for the security and stuff but that just guarantees everyone is going to write the pw info down somewhere.

Use a password vault instead of the book. I'm on a Mac and I use 1Password but these are others. The data is encrypted and works on all my Apple devices and syncs across them all too. You only have to remember the password for the app. It can easily create the passwords you need and it remembers them all for you.

My IT DH's head would explode if I shared some of the ways you all save your passwords! BUT, I would probably be right there with you all if I didn't have him. We have Keeper which saves all our passwords and will create passwords when signing up for a new account. All you have to do is remember one master password. I said, "Well, that will be great until that gets hacked!", which he didn't not think was funny. DH has a great sense of humor but passwords on sticky notes and me asking for help with a printer changes his DNA.

It is aggregating. I hate that website!
I will try something so random by just mindlessly pressing keys - example: $A-0adfj;jalFiutdoat43ug7s
You would think something like that would work but then I get a message "dictionary words" can't be used. I have to hunt to see my random letter have the words "do", "at" and "ad" in there. UGH...I get security and all but that is a little be ridiculous.

OMG 26 characters?? That would kill me! (Mine's a federal site too, but at least it is "just" 12. Today was the first time I had to change it. I don't even remember what the original one was since I saved it to auto populate. But I do remember it was just a bunch of numbers/letters random like your sample.

I do keep the sticky notes in our safe though. I know I need to do better, but I really don't get tech things at all and tend to avoid it as much as possible. I get Dh to handle most things. If he dies I'm screwed.
