A very close friend here in Morocco has a son who is graduating from HS this year and is applying to these colleges. I believe he may have received acceptance letters as well. Her son is tri-lingual...his English is excellent. He wants to major in Business, but hasn't drilled down on specifics yet. My question to the Peas is any personal experience with any of these colleges that you could give outside of the general google search info:
U-Mass @ Boston
University of Tampa
Amhearst - MA
Lesley University - Cambridge, MA
Wentworth - Boston
Stonybrook - New York
All my experience is with colleges in the south, so I don't know much about these. Any extra info/advice would be so helpful.

No experience except Amherst is extremely selective and a top liberal arts college.

I have no personal experience with those other than people/family I know that have graduated from them (specifically Amherst, UMass, and Stonybrook) and were happy with their choice to attend those institutions. IMO, choosing a college is very hard and very personal so sometimes it is hard to be know what one is looking for.
I will say, except for Tampa, all will have winter weather and conditions. So that is something to consider if weather/climate is important.
Good luck to your friend’s son with his decisions.

Tampa is the bottom of the ladder in your list. Personally, unless warm weather is a significant draw, I would avoid it. The other schools are all much better choices.

I graduated from UMass / Amherst back in the dark ages. Amherst College, as stated above, is a very elite liberal arts college. I can speak to Amherst, MA as a beautiful town. When I went to UMass there was a 5 college program which allowed students to take one class a semester at any of the other area colleges (Amherst, UMass, Smith, Hampshire and Mount Holyoke).

My son goes to Tampa and LOVES it! Weather is amazing, great programs. Not a big sports-crowd school (i.e. they do not have a football team) so if someone is looking for that atmosphere, that is usually why they do not choose it. Tampa the city itself is becoming very popular lately as its up & coming.
I live on Long Island and my husband went to Stonybrook. Good school, none of our kids would ever choose to go there. Living on LI is awful. lol Crowded, expensive, Stonybrook is way out east and not near anything else....

A friend went to Amherst, and he loved it. Granted, it was 20 years ago, so things may have changed.
I looked at UMass Boston, but it felt more like a commuter school than a residential undergrad experience. Again, it was 25 years ago when I was looking at schools.
If possible, he needs to visit in person, while classes are in session. That's the best way to get a feel for a place.

I went to Mount Holyoke & participated in the 5 college exchange (Umass , Amherst, Smith, Hampshire, Mount Holyoke). That was an incredible opportunity. You can attend any class at any of the other colleges. I loved the area. So vibrant, always something to do. Would caution him that Amherst, like many Ivy League schools can be a bit traditional. Getting off campus & mingling with students, faculty, and local residents in town will balance all that out.

High fiving all the 5-college grads here! I wonder how many of us were there at the same time??? I came on to say (or, I see now, to echo) that Amherst is a very elite college. He will have business connections for the rest of his life based on the name alone. That does NOT mean it's the best place for him. Stony Brook is a great school for STEM; I don't know much about their business school (not my area). When I lived in Boston, UMass-Boston was, as mich5481 said, more of a commuter school - but that was *ahem* a few decades ago. LOL I don't know anything about the other schools on the list, so can't comment. ETA Amherst is not my alma mater, but we looked at it closely for one of my kids.

Lesley University is a city school in Cambridge (meaning it isn’t rural or small town.) The school is well known for their teaching degree. It’s a private liberal arts school. Amherst is a top-ranked liberal arts school in a small town. Wentworth is a city school in Boston. It’s near a bunch of other Boston colleges. It has a technical and engineering focus. UMASS Boston is a public college. I think it’s more of a commuter college.
That’s an interesting mix of schools!

Wow that is kind of a bizarre list of schools tbh. How did they come up with those to apply to? Just to clarify - it's Umass in Boston and not Umass in Amherst? And it's Amherst College? Amherst is the one I know the best - as it's an excellent liberal arts school, they do not have a business major - most interested in pursuing business major in economics, which while not the same has some cross over depending on what specifically he's interested in pursuing.
I've never heard of Lesley or Wentworth - and since I lived in Boston that gives a sense of their name recognition (granted there are a zillion schools in the greater Boston/Cambridge area - just saying those are not well known NAMES - I have no idea about their specific programs).

I would recommend having her post in the Facebook Grown and Flown. You would get a lot more information there.
