Not crazy at all if it still works to your satisfaction.
I had a 2017 rose gold iPhone and I thought to myself the other day that if I hadn’t cracked the screen beyond repair I would still have it. I loved that phone.

My husband is still carrying around a - honestly not sure how old 8+ year old phone - works for him. Unfortunately mine somehow end up at the bottom of lakes, stolen and otherwise need to be replaced so haven't had the luxury of keeping one that long.

I had my last phone until it wasn’t working anymore. It was an iPhone 6. I replaced it with an iPhone 14 which I will use until it doesn’t work well. I tend to hang onto things that are working fine, not because I’m cheap but because I’m too lazy to research the latest thing on the market because I want to buy the best available at the time since I know I will be keeping it for quite some time. So no, if it is working and you’re happy with it, you should keep it, without feeling weird about it, until you are no longer happy.

I try to go about three years because I don't need to be frivolous, but I want the newer camera/lens, it starts to lag, I don't like when you can't update them, I can still get some decent money for trade-in, AND I use my phone as my main device while not at work.
A lot depends on how much you use your phone too. If your phone is mainly just your phone for calls and texting and maybe a quick internet search when out and about, you probably don't need to upgrade very often (I would say six/seven years may be a bit long due to system upgrades, but if it isn't broke....). However, some people, like me, use my phone for everything, including reading, so six years would be way too long.

I have an old iPhone. We use our phones until they die. Mine is from March of 2018. It’s updated, isn’t lagging, doesn’t have any cracks or problems. I use it as a camera and a computer, I’m typing on it right now.

it's called Planned Obsolescence. it's the only way manufacturers can get you to come back and buy products---by making your current products obsolete/old. operating systems won't update anymore, new apps aren't compatible, etc. they can't make money if your phone lasts forever. ask Maytag. they made washing machines so sturdy that no one bought new ones for 30+ years. way too long to get customer $$$. planned obsolescence. make the newer machines last for only so long.

I think it's a very individual thing. I didn't upgrade this year - so still have an iPhone 13 - but that is the first time I've not upgraded annually since I first got an iPhone (the 4, I think, when it came to Verizon). I've had the new version on launch day pretty much all that time lol But I love technology and use my phone heavily. I work remotely and have for many years and being able to do everything on my phone is important. Plus, I've worked in tech for a number of years and some of those were for an iOS development and design agency, so I literally *had* to have the most current version for testing. I'm a sucker for the upgraded camera every year as well It's absolutely NOT a necessity and if keeping a phone for a long time works for you, that's all that matters. Upgrading annually works for me. There's no one right or wrong answer.

I use my phone A LOT for work and business so I have to have a phone that can run multiple apps, newest versions. Therefore when it starts acting slow I have to upgrade. That usually means only about 2 years but my S18 did manage about 4 years before I replaced it with the S21, which is still going strong.

I'm married to a techie who keeps up to date on the latest and greatest, which means I'm kept up to date as well. If it was not this way, I'd be hanging on to a phone forever. I'm in the if-it-ain't-broke-don't-fix-it camp.
My mom and dad (both 81 years old) just got their very first iPhones. It took the guy at the Verizon store saying, "Look, in a very short time, your flip phone is no longer going to be supported" for them to make the leap. Bless my nephew for holding their hands through the whole transition. Now there is texting happening!!! Something I never thought I'd see!

HelenaJole, my phone is from 2018. I just don't want to pay for a new phone. OFF subject here: On another note, good to see you HelenaJole . Miss seeing you around. Have you done any interesting mural paintings lately? How is your nearly grown up daughter, Kate, doing? If I remember correctly your son's name is Anders, which is my son's name. I followed your sister when she traveled on foot through Italy (?). I hope she is doing well. Geez, I sound like a stalker. I just remember her as being so kind and having such an interesting life. I always admired you.

My and my boss' work phones were an iPhone 7, so they were seven models old. I was not able to do the latest update to it, which was finally the thing that allowed us to get a new phone a couple of months ago. They said we could have an iPhone 11. Ridiculous! It will be out of date in three years. They finally let us have an iPhone 13, so only one year out of date.
I do think it sucks that Apple doesn't support their products after seven years, and I hope they change that one day.
I update my phone every three years. I never pay for my phone outright, I pay it off over three years. I would be happy to keep it for longer than three years, but I am always too impatient to upgrade for the better camera. I have a iPhone 12 now, and as soon as my three years is up at the end of this year, I am going to upgrade to the 15 or whatever the next model is.

Apple doesn't support their products after seven years, and I hope they change that one day I don't. To have an even longer support window would limit how much the new phones could advance. Seven years is a VERY long time in terms of technological advances with both hardware and software. Plus, it's not just Apple that has to support them, it's all app developers. Believe me, as someone who used to work directly in that industry, it's VERY VERY VERY difficult, expensive and time-consuming to properly build, test, and support apps for the full array of phones iOS still supports. If it included even more devices... wow, I can't even imagine. It would really limit being able to implement new features and I bet a lot of people really wouldn't like that.

Seven years is a VERY long time in terms of technological advances with both hardware and software. I was thinking more about things like a MacBook or iPad. I already upgrade my phone every three years. But I am currently having to use my daughter's 2015 MacBook until I can afford to buy a new one, and I can't do any upgrades and I am running a three year old version of Photoshop. Think of the poor people like me who can't afford to upgrade!

A quick PSA regarding our old phones. You can still dial 911 on any charged cell phone without having a service contract. I used to collect the old phones from our office to donate to a local shelter that gave them women in danger. They can keep the phone hidden for use in an emergency from an abusive spouse. So, when you do replace your phone, whether it is frequently or very seldom, it can still provide a woman in danger with a way to call for help. Please consider donating your phones to such a service (after you clean off all personal information, of course)

I'm still using a Samsung Galaxy S9 from 2018. Works fine except for battery life. I am currently keeping an eye on deals for an upgrade. Drives me nuts that most of them require a new line.

I upgraded to a new phone in 2019. The only reason I did was because I had done a site visit for work for one day. Didn't use it all that day. No calls, no texts, and had turned data and wi-fi off. Had less than 10% battery at the end of the day. Now I'm around 50-60% or so. Just depends on how much I use it. Would I like to upgrade for a better camera? Sure, but no need to right now.

It took DH's 5 year old phone dying during a work meeting and then crashing during a site visit for him to finally admit he needed a new phone. It might have been more than 5 years old. He was saying he needs a new phone for over a year before he finally caved.
My dad is the same way. Will not give up his phone unless he has to.

I keep phones and computers as long as they serve my needs. My main laptop is 9 years old. My current phone is 3 years old but I've used older before. With phones I seem to run into issues where they won't update anymore and so the apps I need won't run properly and that forces me to get a new phone.

I bought my phone in 2017. It's almost 6 years old. It has some screen burn but it still works fine and I'm happy with it. This guy I know (who used to work at an Apple store and is kind of a gear head) keeps telling me that my phone is too old and I should get a new one. Surely I'm not the only one running around with a 5+ year old phone? In my world 5 years is pretty young for a phone. I seriously just upgraded from a slide phone (the flip phone's fancy sister) to a smart phone within this past year. Yes, up until 2022, I was still carrying a non-smart phone around with me.

I’m rocking an iPhone 7 (no more iOS updates) that I bought used in summer 2020 because I needed to be able to attend zoom meetings on the go. Prior to that, Samsung rugby flip phone that was from ?? I’m hoping to get a great deal on a 14 when the next ones come out.
Dh is rocking a hand me down from his dad iPhone SE2 (new in 2021?22?). Prior to that he had a free AT&T flip phone that they sent him because his Samsung rugby was no longer supported in Jan 2022. He and I got our Rugbys at the same time.
Dd (11) has an iPhone 13 that she bought Dec 2022 for $180+tax.
My DS (7) has an iPad from 2013 (no more iOS updates) that was mine, handed down to DD, handed down to him. My iPad is from 2018, DS now uses it since his battery is pretty much toast. DD’s iPad is the newest and she bought it in 2021.
I’m replacing my MacBook Pro from 2015 because my had drive died and the OS can’t be updated any longer.
We use our technology until it meets its demise around here! 😂

I don't think it's weird. About 6 months ago I upgraded from a 7+ to an iPhone 14. My (adult) kids teased me that my next upgrade will be an iPhone 21!

I am always the one with the latest iPhone. DH never carries his phone (because he couldn’t have it at work). He still doesn’t even though he’s retired. DH is the one who buys me a new phone as a gift when he thinks I’m ready. DS always gets my old phone. So I have an iPhone 13, DS has my 12, DH has a cheapie iPhone, and my uncle uses my old iPhone X (no phone service) for listening to audible.
My MacBook can no longer update to the latest operating system. But I don’t use it for serious computing. He keeps asking if I’m ready for a new one, but it’s still working fine.

I always admired you. Kate is 18 and graduating this year! School has been rough but this year has been better in some ways, so that's good. Both of our kids are on the autism spectrum but they have very different challenges. Kate wants to do something art-related but we don't really know what that's going to look like. We just started watching The Good Place together and she's enjoying it. Andy (Anders) is 14 and almost as tall as me now. He's in the Spectrum Support class at school and has just recently started saying he doesn't want to go. Maybe it's getting boring. My sister (Betsey) is living in Utah with my brother's family, working for Brandon Sanderson along with my brother and his wife. She was doing a lot of hiking but hurt her knee pretty badly a few months ago so she's figuring out what to do about that. I did get to do some set painting in February for a friend's production of The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. That was a lot of fun. I'm teaching Korean online and trying to work on some house projects, and also getting ready for a trip to Europe this summer. (We had it all planned for 2020 and had to cancel everything.) Good to see you!

Dh andI each have a Samsung Galaxy S9+, my mom has the S9, and DS has an iphone XR. Ds has had his 6 months longer than the rest of us, but it has been 4 or 5 years. No issues at all with the Samsungs, although mine is a bit slow due to memory.

I used to upgrade every year. I don't do that anymore.
I've had my Note 20 since I bought it in 2020, almost 3 years ago.
It's the last Note that Samsung put out. It's rose gold and I love it, it works just fine for me. I plan on keeping it until it dies at this point. $1000 for phones every year or every other year is just too much.
My brother and SIL keep their phones forever. In fact, my SIL just upgraded her iPhone 7 to an 11 because my BFF had her old one just laying around. 🤣
