I bought my phone in 2017. It's almost 6 years old. It has some screen burn but it still works fine and I'm happy with it. This guy I know (who used to work at an Apple store and is kind of a gear head) keeps telling me that my phone is too old and I should get a new one. Surely I'm not the only one running around with a 5+ year old phone?

I am sure you are not the only one. I update my phone for the camera, that is the important feature for me. So I wouldn't still be using a phone from 2017. But, it apparently works fine for you, which is all that matters. Your phone's software probably can't be updated anymore, so that might be an issue regarding new security upgrades that come out.

I like to hang onto mine as long as possible too. It’s the lack of ability to update the OS that becomes the problem. When you can’t do the security updates anymore it’s in your best interest to upgrade the phone.
ETA: The kiss of death for me is when things start to take too long to do.

Which validates my point, we don't have cell phones, we have cell cameras with crappy phone apps.

I am using an iPhone 8+ from 2018 and I think my iPad is a year older. They are both at the max for their memory and updates throw them for a loop, so it won't be long before they will need to be replaced. I hate the idea that when I upgrade to later models that I will lose that lovely little HOME button and need to swipe.

I have an iPhone 8 Plus. It’s probably that old or older. Everything works fine so I have no intentions of replacing it.

Mine was new in 2019. I see no reason to pay for another when this one works just fine.

I have an iPhone X and DH an 8--both bought in early 2018. Will keep both as long as they work well.

I bought a Xs in 2017 and used it with no issue (other than not being happy with the camera…) until December.
When I upgraded, I gave the phone to my DS who is perfectly happy using it. Btw- once we cleared off my bazillion photos and 5 + years worth of texts etc… the photos are a lot better and the phone is, in general, much faster!

I had an iPhone 7+ until last fall. I upgraded when they stopped updating the OS.

I now have the iPhone 13, but before this I had an SE for at least 5 years which was a hand me down from my sister-in-law who had it for at least 3 or 4 years…and that was an upgrade from my non smart flip phone. So no not weird in my book.
I did upgrade because I wanted a good camera as my DSLR was getting really old and I wanted to be able to take okay pictures whenever it moved me. 😄
But I am sure I will keep this one well past what most people do.

I’m another who upgrades for the camera. Otherwise I’m sure I’d be right there with you having an older phone.

I have an iPhone XR and it still works. I got it right after launch in January. It does get hot and stops charging so something needs to be done.

Our phones were bought June or 2016. They are 8+ iPhones.
2 are in excellent condition and work great. 1, the case broke and by the time we could get another, it was dropped and the back cracked, but it works just fine. We have toyed with the idea of an upgrade. We are on Sprint, which T-Mobile took over, so we do need to transition to them.
We are reluctant as the phones work fine, but do think there is a plan that is a bit cheaper, so I should just bite the bullet and do it.
I believe most of the main carries do offer some type of incentive with a trade in, and I think 8+ phones are the last of the line that we could get a credit for.
ETA, my 8+ still updates. Did one just last night. 31 new emojis. lol It had other update stuff too, but thought it was funny when I read the first line of what the update was about and it was about the emojis.

I had my previous phone for ages. I only upgraded because my dd kept telling me to. lol. She said there were all sorts of fun features on the new one (iPhone). I still resisted for awhile but then she started in on how good the camera was. And then I read something about older phones, security features, and banking via your phone. Since I'd just started doing bank and credit card stuff with my phone I decided I should do the upgrade. And then one day we had a fox sunning himself right outside the kitchen window on our deck. Dh and I both took photos through the screen and my phone was as clear as anything, as if there was no screen there at all. Dh's photo was hazy because of the screen. (older iPhone) I don't know how my new phone's camera did that... but dd said "I told you so!"

I was using such an old phone that my telephone company mailed me one. Free of charge. They felt so sorry for me that they upgraded me for free, and my phone was so old that the network it used was actually switched off in my country. Yeah, I go to every phone upgrade kicking and screaming 😆

My phone is about 3 years old but it looks a lot older. It was an older model when I bought it because it is Tracfone. I love Tracfone but I don't think they support they latest models of anything. I can make calls, take photos, text, get directions, look up stuff online, maintain my calendar. I wouldn't mind a better camera but otherwise, the $200 I paid for it 3 years ago is still serving me fine.

If it works for you, keep it until it dies. Some people need the latest phone the day it comes out. Others just need a phone and a camera.

Surely I'm not the only one running around with a 5+ year old phone? My phone was older than that! I recently upgraded to an iPhone 14. The only reason I did...my Nokia, yes, my tiny blue (non-smart) Nokia that I had since 2002...was no longer going to be supported or work so I HAD to upgrade. That phone still worked great. I didn't use it a lot (I have an iPhone that is issued by my job and I mostly used that), but from time to time, I would still call folks on my reliable Nokia.
There is nothing wrong with keeping your phone 6 years (or longer) as long as it works fine and is supported...I don't see a reason to upgrade until you need to (ex: no longer holds a charge, no longer is supported, etc).
Phones are so expensive...you should use them as long as you can (IMO)

My last phone was an iPhone 8. The updates on that model are going to stop by next year. I was reading that once the security updates can’t be done anymore a cell phone can be hacked just by going online.

Mine is an iphone 8. DH keeps saying he's going to upgrade it, but I don't care to. I use it mainly for phone calls, camera and texting and use my ipad for everything else, so I don't think I have to. But I'll probably give in sometime this year.

MIL had an iPhone 6 until Christmas. It barely worked and couldn’t get updates. Verizon had a thing going where we could add a line to our plan and get an iPhone 13 for free, so we did that for her for Christmas. We didn’t like to think of her driving around rural Montana without a phone that works well.

My husband has an iPhone 5 from 2012. Works perfect, he will not replace it until they pry it from his hands. It works fine on our network. It is LTE compatible. This phone is in mint condition. He does not use a case, nor have a screen protector. It goes in his shirt pocket all day. It doesn't have a scratch on it. I can get a new phone and have a crack or scratch in 10 minutes. I don't know how he does it. His body suffers more damage than his phone.
It does not get updates, and he can not install most newer apps.
He likes the size and can't get one that small anymore. The cell phone provider keeps trying to tell him it will no longer work, but it does. LOL I had a new battery installed in it a year ago, and it chugs on.

I keep mine until there is a reason not to. I have a 12 I think now, upgraded from an 8. When my 8 ran out of space and dh's was glitching for longer than I would have put up (kept telling him to get a new one) with we both got 12's.
I don't like shelling out so much money on a phone so I would definitely not be the type to upgrade because there was a new one available. But to each his own.

I think our phones are relatively "new". I'm horrible about keeping up with that sort of stuff. I have the Samsung 21+ 5g, and so does my mom, and my two DDs have the iphone 13(I think?). We are all on the same plan but I really only keep up with mine and Moms since the girls pay for their own (they just pay me every month before it's due lol). I do wish I had a better camera. Mine was supposedly "better" than the last one but I don't really think it is. I've been drooling over the Pixel one but likely won't ever get one. :: ::

I keep mine as long as they work. I think mine is 2-3 years.. I think on average I replace every 5-6 years. Usually because they stop holding a charge. Once because I broke the screen really bad. If all goes well I am sure my current one should last another few years.

I only got rid of my IPhone 6 last yr because Sprit merged with AT&T and it wouldn’t work with 5g. They gave me a free upgrade to an 11 and I’ll keep that until it dies. I don’t need the latest and greatest when what I have works perfectly fine.

I just upgraded a week or so ago. Mine was 5+ years old. It's been acting up for a year or so but I kept babying it. However we are going on a big overseas trip soon so I wanted to be sure it was working well. And also people started having trouble calling me, so after a couple of days I went in and got a new one. I'll keep it 4-6 years too most likely.
