I sometimes struggle to put my shoes and socks on, depending on how much pain I’m having that day and how stiff I am. Last week I remembered a gadget that my dad had and went hunting on Amazon. I found something and ordered it in the hopes it would eliminate the struggle and extra pain I can go through sometimes. I tried it this morning. It works amazingly well! I was doubtful because it looked a little weird, but darned if it didn’t allow me to put my socks on perfectly the very first time. No twisted heels and no needing to lay down to rest afterward. I know that sounds so stupid, having to rest after putting my shoes and socks on, but it is the truth. Not every day, just on the bad days. Today is another bad pain day but I needed to run to the grocery store for a few things. I was dreading putting my shoes and socks on until I remembered this gadget. You slip your sock over this plastic arched portion and just put your foot into the plastic arch. There are two roped handles that you pull on to ease the plastic out of the way and the sock onto your foot. I was so surprised and thrilled. I know, I know, it’s just socks, but if you had as much pain putting them on as I do, you would understand. And sometimes I couldn’t get them straight and would have to walk around with the heel twisted, reminding me all day long with every step what a pathetic person I can be sometimes. I also bought a long-handled shoe horn that was more helpful than the short shoehorn that I’ve always used. Getting dress is going to be like the old days for me now. Just doing it without thinking! If you know anyone who has had spinal fusing, hip surgery, shoulder problems, or fibromyalgia and has days where they struggle to get socks on, give this to them. They will be so grateful. It truly is the little things sometimes! www.amazon.com/dp/B00U9TWCXU?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_dt_b_product_details

My mother uses one. Incredibly helpful for her. Happy it works for you as well.

That looks like a cool gadget! But it looks like it would stretch the top of my socks, and they wouldn't stay up any more. Did your dad have that issue?
I remember my dad had a shoe horn, when I was a kid in the 70s. We used to love using it to put our shoes on.

I remember my dad had a shoe horn, when I was a kid in the 70s. We used to love using it to put our shoes on. My dad had quite a lot of swelling in his legs so my mom would have to cut a slit in the top of his socks to make them looser to keep from digging into his poor swollen legs. She would then stitch the cut edges so they didn’t fray. Stretching the tops out would have been a good thing in his case! I wondered if that would happen to my socks too, but that plastic part that you stretch the sock over is very flexible and it doesn’t over stretch the sock at all. The top of the sock was no more stretched than when I stretched them manually to put my foot in.

I bought that for my 82 year old dad after he needed surgery for a fall. It was suggested by the hospital physio but I don't know if he ever used it. He's a stubborn old goat. I think it will be useful for me in years to come!

Wow, such a simple idea, but useful. I'm going to suggest it to my Mom.

I just sent that link to my old neighbor. He wears a compression sock on one leg that is twice the size of the other leg. He was sprayed with agent Orange in Vietnam, as were hundreds of soldiers who later developed cancer. My neighbor across the street had her husband die from the cancer he developed from his war service. My neighbor’s one leg had the cancer invade all the lymph nodes in his one leg which is why the fluid collects on that side. I don’t know how he gets his one compression sock on now, but it can’t hurt to let him know about this. Thank you! If even one pea’s friend or relative benefits from these tips it will be worth the embarrassment of admitting I need one of these. I know I shouldn’t be ashamed because I didn’t do anything to cause my infirmity and pain, but I guess I still don’t want to think of myself as slightly disabled in any way, even though I am. Damned vanity.

I’ve been using a very similar gadget for quite a few years now. I’m waiting for a hip replacement and I’m unable to reach my left foot at all. Mine has cloth straps which I put to good use recently when I was on a trip, and forgot to take my long shoehorn with me. I threaded the strap from the sock aid through the loop on the back of my Chelsea boot and used it to pull the boot on. I was very impressed with myself! 😄

They gave my husband one of those before he was released from the hospital last month after his fall. He js still in a back brace for two spine fractures and four broken ribs, and this has been incredibly useful!

DS recommends those to his patients pretty often.

I have had both hips replaced, one in 2019 and the other in 2020.
I have used something similar since as it just makes putting socks on so easy.

If it makes life easier and allows for greater independence, it’s a good thing!
I rarely wear socks any more, but if I needed one, I’d get it.
As for shoes, I found the long arm shoe horn awkward to use, never could get the hang of it.
I’m wearing a new pair of Kiziks right now - you can put them on by standing and just sliding your foot in. I had one pair and ordered two more in a different style. I have arthritis in my back and one hip and sometimes I’m stiff and it isn’t easy to move certain ways. These are lightweight and they really do work well. In fact, I ordered a leather pair for my brother and his are looking kind of worn because he wears them almost all the time, preferring these to his “work” shoes for outdoor work. They are lighter on his feet and so much easier to get on than what he had been wearing.

I got what I call my “sock putter onner” when I broke my hip. It was and continues to be a game changer for those days when I just cannot.
I have a grabber pinchy thing too (I also call them by ridiculous monikers).
I keep a cane in my car for days that I cannot.
I have a walker at the ready for the occasional day that my body will not.
I also bought a gadget for the kitchen that helps opening cans with pull tabs and water bottles which are notoriously hard to grip
EMBRACE IT.

That’s a good option for those who need it.
I use my long Ikea shoehorn daily, and I absolutely love it.

Have you ever seen the Kizik brand of shoes? They are made to be slipped on and there are some cute styles.
