I opened up a stamp set I haven't used in a while, and every stamp in the set, as well as the sheet that the stamping side of the stamps adheres to, was greasy!
I washed them all off with soap and water, waiting for them to dry so I can do a test stamp.
Has anyone had this happen? Is this the beginning of a cheap stamp set deteriorating?
Sometimes if I've only stamped with Versamark I won't clean the stamp off, otherwise I always wipe the back of my stamps off with my DIY stamp shammy (a cut up Absorber) before putting them away. I live in a dry climate, so it wasn't humidity mixing with anything.
The set is one of the small Heidi Swapp sets sold exclusively at Michaels ~2014.
I figured the Peas Braintrust would have some thoughts/experience to share.

Depending on how old the stamp is it could be made of acrylic. I had many Studio G (Michael's) stamps that kind of broke down and stuck to the clear plastic backing, although they weren't greasy. My stamps made with photopolymer no matter the age are fine.

I’ve had rubber embellishments get greasy like this. I ended up tossing them because they were cheap to start with. You could try baby powder or similar to see if you can dry out the surface?

Update: the greasy substance seems to have washed away, and the stamp I used seemed fine. Stamped clearly, and didn't leave a greasy residue. 🤷🏻♀️
I should check my other HS sets acquired around the same time/place and see if they have an issue.

I have never had that problem. Some have gotten sticky and others have become yellowed. The sticky ones seem to be goners. The ones that get sticky are usually 10+ years old and acrylic, back when scrapbooking lines were adding stamps with each new release. Not the best quality. They get stuck to the paper and tear it with stamping. The yellowed ones are photo polymer and work fine; they just look a little odd. Some of them are approaching 10 years, like Ali Edwards first lines of stamps before she went with Studio Calico.

Note the HS sets sold at Michaels were acrylic. If you never or barely used them & didn't "prime" them, it's possible the oily residue from the manufacturing process saturated the entire package over time. Also, exposure to light or heat (e.g. next to a window or vent) &/or lack of proper cleaning after last use (especially if with an oil-based ink) may also have caused/contributed to their condition.

They are acrylic and it's just inferior material compared to rubber or photopolymer. I've had some acrylic stamps bond with the backer if they haven't been used initially, ones that almost seem to start melting away or ones that get stiff and don't cling. If I buy any, I figure they have a short window of use, and cancelled my studio calico subscription because they switched to acrylic stamps in their kits (which had been one of my biggest reasons to keep subbing to them for so long).
