Does it count if you walk your dog? I have been going on three to five almost 1 mile walks a day (each walk takes 15 min.). I never take my phone with me as I don't always have pockets and don't like to carry a phone on a walk. So I do get lots of thinking done on the walks! Usually it's about how to get my dog to behave better on walks though. It doesn't matter if you are walking your dog. However, the idea is to be mindful and if your dog is interfering with the intention then it probably won't be a great experiment for you. So you decide.

I do podcasts whilst I walk, but good for you! May it be a good May Would you consider for the sake of experiment turning off your podcast for a miles worth of your walk? I'd love to hear your experience if you tried that. There are times the tech malfunctions and I make a concerted effort to listen, but I find that, for me, the podcast time is *my* needed self care.

I’ll do it! I will be with my dog, but that’s okay, right? I just signed up for audible and I’m listening to one of the pea book club books right now, but I won’t take my ear pieces with me or I will be too tempted to click it on. Dogs are A-OK. Mine just kind of trots along. Although I will say that my old girl is a pitbull and even though she is very laid back and a sweetheart, people don't often try to interact with us. So I would try to avoid that aspect of it if you can. Just to be able to sit with your thoughts without interruption. Well, that might be hard to avoid neighbors. How about this - if a neighbor stops me to talk, I will add that time back in and walk for a total mile, even if it is broken up by a chatty neighbor. Being the newest member on the block, I have people introducing themselves to me and I would never want to shut them down and appear rude. And the man across the street is super lonely and every time he sees me, he motions me over. On second thought, there is a dog park near me somewhere where I won’t see anyone that knows that I just bought my house. I will just go walk there so that I won’t be interrupted and potentially hurt someone’s feelings. That will work better.

It was simply a statement of what I am going to do and why and an invitation to join me. If that doesn't apply to you, I'm A-OK with that. I guess I'm not understanding why you would post here if it's not a thing you're interested in?

Good compromises suggested.

I love this and I'm in! If anyone uses Mapmywalk and doesn't mind being friends on there lemme know! I really just use it to save the walks I've been doing with a bit of journaling and photos I take along the way but would definitely share them with others for some motivation.
I'm not sure how I'll feel about not being able to have a playlist or podcast going but it's definitely worth a try.

Books, magazines, newspapers, podcasts, and when I'm not doing any of that, it is social media and music. I'm an info/music junkie. So the idea of walking/running for a mile alone, unplugged is different for me too.

I have gotten out of the habit of walking outside (I usually get at least 12,000 steps a day at work, but I don’t really count it as exercise as my body is used to it). I need to start walking again on my relatively quiet dirt road, when I do, usually I have music playing at the appropriate step count to keep me moving, but a quiet mile a day does sound appealing….

I'm having hip replacement surgery (my second one) mid-May. I'm looking forward to being able to walk each day!
I listened to a book on Audible called Do Walk and it is about committing to walking each day. It's a quick read/listen and I really enjoyed the author's how and why of daily walks.
We live on a wonderful road for walking. It runs right next to Puget Sound, so the soundtrack is waves, ferry horns, and a million varieties of birds. I'm looking forward to the serenity of it all. But first...repairing mobility.

a woman that has walked or run a 5k every single day for over 4 years. I had a running obsession, many many years ago, and I just had to run every single day. Even if I'd been out to a nightclub and got home at 1am, I would still go out for a run. Crazy. Since then I have tried to avoid anything that could possibly put me into that obsessive mode. However, I definitely need to get off my bum more, so I'm happy to try it for the month of May. My walking buddy will be away for the last three weeks of May, so I will need to motivate myself instead of sitting back and letting her motivate me. I just googled, and 1 mile = 1.6km. That is do-able! ETA: Oh hang on..... reading comprehension is key...... I somehow missed the part about being mindful and not listening to anything while walking. Boom, I'm out!

I already walk at least a mile every day with my dog, but I always have AirPods. I can try taking them out for at least the first mile and see how it goes!

I cannot commit to the daily walk, but I do walk a couple times a week at the gym. Often, with my volume off. I love walking, it helps me sort through my mind and think about things.
I love being in the quiet. I rarely have my Tv or music on in the evenings. Especially if I've been at work or out and about. I have sensory issues and need quiet time every day. I could go a very long time without noise, wouldn't bother me at all.

The distance around my block is just over a mile. I never wear earbuds or listen to anything while walking this block. I walk with a bit of a reactive pup and we have deer and turkey all over and I like being very aware of what she is seeing/hearing.

I'm so excited so many of you want to try this. While I was going to do it anyway, it is much more fun to do it with other people.

I'll do it! I work downtown, so I walk quite a bit anyway but almost always with an Audible going. When the pressure is up, I like to go walk a mile or two in the tunnels. Not wearing my airpods might be a good way to decompress and re-focus.

I am going to try but it may only be .5 of a mile, bc that is about what it takes to walk up and down my street. Is it ok to do it 2x or does it need to be all at once?

I did this during the pandemic, but right now not everyday. I guess I could challenge myself to try to do everyday. I just sometimes prefer those extra 18 minutes of sleep. (how long my loop is that is just over a mile) But yes, walking has always been my meditation, way to think, sort out anxiety. I never listen to anything out of safety to be aware of surroundings and I like to hear the birds, breeze, natural sounds.
This time of year SO & I take longer walks in the evening, so I probably won't do everyday, but can try to do more!
I just heard of a study about how adding walking or more walking can add years to your life and help combat most illness/issues with aging, so I am recommitting to it. Thanks for the reminder!

I think I am going to join in on your challenge. I hurt my knee at the beginning of March, and I am finally feeling okay enough to start going for walks again. A mile is probably a good start, though it will be a challenge to not listen to music or a book on Audible. When I hike, I typically don't listen to anything but the sounds of nature, and I love it. But on daily walks, I usually listen to something. But I am willing to give it a go.

I think this is a great idea. I will have to make the commitment to do this everyday (I walk my dogs every morning at 5am, but not a mile and I am not quite awake yet!).

We like to go on early walks at 7:00am and late walks at 11:00pm, so usually no one out at those times, especially late at night. So he is on good behavior then, so much easier to be mindful on those walks. No distractions as I never have my phone with me when I go walking.
Then the afternoon walks for training.

That’s my plan, at least most days a week. It’s what will get me started working out again after surgery. It’s all I can do right now, so I’m going to make it work for me!

So I work in a very large cemetery. It is beautiful here, and we have hills and flat areas on our roads. I am going to map out a couple of routes that are 1/2 mile from the office and give this a go!! I can either walk during lunch, after work, or maybe even come early and walk before work sometimes. I NEED to move, this might just be the shove I need! LOL
