My sister makes beautiful clay jewelry and asked me if I'd ever used gelli plates. I had no idea what she was talking about, so looked on YouTube how to use on paper. No doubt, the technique results were beautiful. But the effects also reminded me of what you get using TH non-stick sheets. I'm just wondering what the advantages are using the gelli plate vs the non-stick sheets. Thanks, Peas! 🙂

Ooh, that's a whole rabbit hole of mixed media fun!! You can definitely just use them for smooshy techniques but you can also press stamps or stencils into the ink or paint to create a design that will transfer to your paper when you press it onto the gel surface. That's maybe the most obvious and simple difference. There's a LOT more that you can do to manipulate the paint or ink on the gel to create prints, if that's something you want to do. This playlist is a cardmaker who is not a mixed media person experimenting with a gelli plate. That might give you a glimpse of how it works differently than just smooshing (which is how she started out, just using regular inks to create pretty backgrounds). youtube.com/playlist?list=PLGLSuElJ3ywhdmbFYO2l2iw8ZCW78RFC1This playlist is a mixed media artist who has stacks and stacks of paper made on gelli plates. youtube.com/playlist?list=PLy5RH1BZql4Ky1-9jmIdjUL26ImM1p2FY

But in answer to your title, I currently say no to gelli plate printing because I don't need to do all those messy things and the TH non stick sheet is good enough if I decide I want to get a little bit messy. I also don't care for paints and don't want to start collecting them. It really depends how deep you want to go into mixed media.

Gelli plates are expensive. I have some. That I made. I thought I would use them more but I haven't. But nice to know I have them for the just in case. You can make some gorgeous prints with them. ETA: I think this is the recipe I used. What I liked about it is you can make whatever size gelli plate you want. I used a Ferrero Roche candy plastic container to make a small one. A larger size was an 8x8 brownie pan. www.crafttestdummies.com/recipe-homemade-permanent-gelli-plates/

I have a couple of different sizes that I received as gifts and, this will come as a surprise to no one, I have yet to use them. I watch all the videos of people making beautiful prints but haven't tried them out. This must be my sign from the universe to bust them out and use them!

I took a mixed media class and HAD to have one...that is still sitting unopened. I thought I'd use my paints from my tole painting days, but they were all dried up and I haven't invested in new paint.

Watched those videos and all I can say is - WOW! I will probably stick with my TH craft sheet as I'm still experimenting with it with all the inks and I still have a lot to learn. I'm not sure I would enjoy the really messy stuff, but I admire their creativity. It's amazing the tools, techniques, and mediums that are available, though. It makes my head spin! Thanks for sharing, Ladies!

I have a gelli plate. I don’t use it frequently, but when I do pull it out I go on a spree and make lots of prints.
Part of my problem with it is that I only use it in the kitchen, where I can spread out on wipeable countertops. I won’t use it in my craft area, where I’ve got nice wood tables and carpet. And I only take over the kitchen with art projects when I have the house to myself, which is almost never.

I have - ahem - "a few" Gelli plates and love them, even though I don't use them *that* often. I tend to have a session with them, get a workspace covered up and all the gear in place and then like honeypea, gelli print everything in sight ;-) Very versatile and there are some brilliant websites and YT vids of ideas for what to do with them. My plates are purchased, branded ones, though friends have made their own with gelatin and baking pans which work equally well. The downside of home made gelli plates is that they don't last forever and eventually go mouldy (yuk).

I just looked at them the other day and they look like they did the first day I made them. And that was at least 5 years ago. That's not to say in a month they won't degrade but I'll take a 5 yr life span.

My aunt is an artist, and makes prints using a gelli plate, and I got a lesson in how to use one last summer. Have I actually done it? Nope... but it's here if I ever get around to it.

To make them "permanent", you have to add glycerin to the mixture. Mine are still strong yet pliable, don't smell, and work.

Messy supplies and techniques disrupt my space and my workflow so unless I get myself a different craft space I think I'll skip it.

No, to Gelli plates and heat embossing. My little scrap room can only hold so much. AND our home office stores a lot of my scrappy overflow. My husband has no clue!
****not heat embossing...I meant heated gold foiling

I've been thinking of getting one for alcohol inks. I've been watching vids of people making lovely cards this way.
