DS had his turning green ceremony this weekend at Ft. Benning. It was such a great experience! DS is so happy and has made some good friends. We had a 4 day family pass and gosh I feel like I drove a thousand miles this weekend. I picked him up every morning on base and all he wanted to do was shower at our hotel and nap. We shopped a lot to get him the things he was now allowed to have. Books were his his biggest ask and I cannot tell you how happy that made me. I am a big reader and he has never been. He has been reading a lot and bought a stack of books. I loved seeing the base. Everyone could not have been nicer. We went to the National Infantry Museum which was amazing. I also got lost and ended up in Alabama. LOL. He is so excited to start his next step and is anxious to get his orders.
Now that I am home, apparently I was more stressed than I thought bc I have shingles! I was prescribed an anti viral but if anyone has any tips for what to do with these stupid painful blisters I am all ears.
Thanks to the peas for the support!

I think there is a Rx cream to go with the oral Rx.
If you got the oral Rx quickly (48 hours of outbreak, I think) it clears up relatively quickly.

Wow that went fast. Seems like he just signed up a few weeks ago! I don't know what turning green or SIT is either.

I don't know what SIT or turning green is but congrats! Turning Green is when you officially become a US Army soldier. I don’t know what SIT is. OP, Congrats to your son. Hope you get better soon! ETA - Soldier in Training maybe??

Is the anti viral every 8 hours? I took mine exactly like clock work. I think I caught mine in time and the anti-viral helped a ton. I still have some residual nerve pain that I will probably have forever and I am thankful it was only on my side and back and not anywhere near my face. I didnt get the cream because I didnt seem to need it. I hope you are feeling better soon! Its not fun at all! I got mine 4 months before turning 50 and being eligible for the vaccine.

Sounds like you really enjoyed the ceremony and spending time with your son. That's great! Do you know where he goes next?

Congratulations!
If he’s a reader, have him check out the base thrift shop. Books weigh a lot and get jettisoned before a PCS. It’s usually about $1 for a book.
He can also find dishes, bedding, weight equipment, etc there. It’s a great resource for a limited budget.

Congratulations, Mama!! For me, Basic Training was hands down the hardest thing (thus far!). I am so glad you got to have some great quality time with him.
Sorry about the shingles --- I'v never had them so I don't know how to help you but I hope they clear up quickly!

I just had a SIT 2 years ago and also don't know what "turning green" is! I thought the industry I work in had the most acronyms until I had a kid that got into the army! And it's funny, some we ask what they mean and 1/2 she doesn't even know I'm glad you had a great weekend with him! Sorry about your shingles, hopefully with less stress you get some relief from them!

So what is a SIT? Someone asked above and it was never answered. I guessed “soldier in training”.

Yes, sorry to post and ghost. I have been keeping myself in an edible induced haze which has helped with the pain and itching. Shingles really sucks. I am 45 so not eligible for the vaccine.
SIT is soldier in training. DS is now officially a soldier. He is infantry and at Ft Benning they do something called OSUT. One station unit training. They do basic and AIT all together. Turning green is the equivalent of boot camp graduation. He now is doing AIT (advanced something training LOL). At the end of July he will have a turning blue ceremony which is the final graduation where he received the blue cord for his dress uniform signfying that he is an infantryman. He could get his orders any time between now and July.
Now that he has a new phone I hope to hear from him tomorrow!

I don't know what the abbreviations mean but my oldest boy was in the Navy and we drove up to his boot camp graduation. Once he was free to leave with us we went to a park and took some pictures then back to our hotel. When I told him I had a change of clothes for him he was elated, haha just shorts and tshirt (but there were rules about staying in uniform in public) then he crashed on one of the beds and slept. I'd thought we could explore some of the area but just didn't have the heart to wake him so we just ordered pizza and stayed in. He was on watch duty that night so we didn't get him overnight like so many did.
No help with the shingles though. Had em when I was 17 and the country Dr I got took to put a injection in every sore, a steroid I think, hurt like heck don't recommend but they dried up.

I bought a big umbrella at the Infantry museum when DS graduated from AIT. Best umbrella ever! 😂
CONGRATULATIONS to your son!!!
