A little over a month ago I posted about going to our new station's health fair and getting an abnormal thyroid level, then going through all the tests, and being diagnosed with Grave's disease. The endocrinologist put me on an methimazole and beta blocker. He said my levels were so high that after stabilizing the levels, we would probably use radioactive iodine and kill off the thyroid.
Well I went in today after being on medication for a month and my levels have actually adjusted to the normal range. He is going to keep me on this dose for another month and then do another blood test to see if I go even lower or if I maintain, but that if I don't jump back up (I was 5 times the normal level) then we won't be radiating my thyroid.
I know it isn't a huge health crisis, but I am glad that the meds seem to be working.

I honestly never felt bad. I only found out because the town just south of me was having a health fair and my kids stayed the night at grandma's house, so I went.
Right before I started the meds, one of my eyes started to bulge. It still isn't perfect, but it hasn't gotten worse. The eye doctor told me that it could take a year of normal levels to see improvement.

Great News! My husband was on medication for 5-6 years, had his levels checked every year. Then based on the levels, took him off medication and it's been "normal" for 3 years now. We're so glad they didn't kill off the thyroid.

I'm so glad that you caught this so early and before symptoms. Dh has hypothyroid, and he feels so bad when it's off. I hope and pray that they don't have to kill the thyroid. (that sort of thing would be something I'd get a 2nd opinion about at a University specialist--it's not like it will grow back if he isn't right about the diagnosis and treatment.) I sure hope the meds work.

So glad to hear your levels have regulated with medication. My husband was diagnosed with Graves in the military 20 years ago and did have the radioactive iodine therapy. Please, please get that 2nd opinion if needed.

That is great news. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/MNrJDkDuSwqIMVw33MdD.jpg) I too was diagnosed with Grave's last year, I also had nodules that were suspicious for cancer. I had my thyroid removed 3 months ago, I did have 2 small spots of cancer. But they were able to remove it, and no chemo for me. My Dr is still trying to get my dose of medication correct . I didn't have bulging eyes, but my heart started racing. My pulse was over 200 for 24 hours at one point. Thyroid issues can be scary stuff. Hopefully, the medication will work and you won't have to do radiation to kill the thyroid.

I'm really happy for you that your treatment is working so well. I had hyperthyroidism caused by Graves Disease and had to take the radiation pill just a few years ago. It didn't work the first time and I had to have a second, much larger dose a year later. The hyperthyroidism made me so, so sick. My list of symptoms was endless and my thyroid was huge. Looked like a huge butterfly-shaped bulge in the middle of my neck! My thyroid was just so out of control, I had no other choice ![:(](//storage.proboards.com/5645536/images/mYSUyHtG9Jrcmm_ydVcK.jpg) Best of luck to you! Stay on top of getting your levels checked! I'm really happy for you!

(((HUGS))) I have Hashimoto's (the opposite of what you have). I feel for what you are going through. Please check out "Stop the Thyroid Madness" book and website they have lots of good advice there. Also, there is a closed FB group called "For Thyroid Patients Only" that follows advice of the book. Many of the people there have had graves and they will have a lot of knowledge. What your doctor tells you may not be the most current information. My doctor who specializes in cutting-edge thyroid treatment (holtorf med) says most doctors in the industry are about 17 years behind in their treatment and endos are worse! Going entirely gluten free may be something that will help you so you might want to try it out for 30 days to see how it goes.

Great news! Thank God you went to that health fair! I'm hypothyroid, so the opposite of you. My levels have been unstable for the past year, so I need to see an endocrinologist if they change again. I started a new med 3 months ago and have been stable, but my new doc is doubtful that the new med will help for long. Because I'm somewhat vain and shallow, I would just like to be able to stop losing my hair by the handful. Oh, and like have energy and stuff too.

This may not be as serious as say lung cancer in the scheme of diseases but it is YOUR health and I would hate for someone to minimize it if it were me so I am going to pray that it gets completely better very quickly and that your numbers go down and you feel great soon! "I know it isn't a huge health crisis, but I am glad that the meds seem to be working." Sister, it is a crisis. Thyroids are very important!
