Ok, so we made an offer on a house yesterday.
Who knows what will happen but I'm excited to think of the possibilities.
I will have a room on the lower level to store stuff and have easy access to it.
However, I like to be on the main floor and not all alone.
I will have a cabinet or something to store frequently used stuff in this room that is currently a very small kitchen. We are going to open up a wall and make a big kitchen/dining area and make that room like a laundry room/pantry/mud room.
So I'm going to have a cabinet. Or something. A shelf with some open space and some door.
I would love to know if anyone has something similar. We are gutting this house so I can do whatever I want.
If you have a cabinet, how do you organize it? I think I wouldn't want it to be too deep, more like about 12" so I can see everything.
If this makes any sense, please spam me with photos, links, and ideas.
I'm going to start a pinterest board and add to it.
Yay!
(we've been in our current house nearly 19 years so I'm ready for a change and to have the opportunity to do what I want).

I actually just bought this pantry because teenagers eat a lot, and I needed more room for food. 😄 I absolutely love it! It was easy to put together, I just needed help attaching the doors. I love how it is all pine wood. It can easily be painted or stained to match any decor, but mine I left as is for now. My husband also made two extra shelves for me to maximize the space. These bins fit perfectly on the shelves, four across.

We’re still a couple months away from buying something We have been looking since 2019. The housing market here is a bit much. And we're being super picky. I'm excited! I'll post pics for sure.

I have a couple of the IKEA Kallax shelf units, a raskog cart, and the armoire from our bedroom set. The Armoire has two drawers on the bottom and two doors that open wide. Inside has three shelves that I have clear bins in to store my stamps and stuff. It's from the days when TV's were deep so lots of room inside.

YAY! for making fun future scrappy space plans Thank you. I should probably wait until the accept our offer but... Did you put an offer on my house? LOL We had one offer that fell through on Saturday but then we got a brand new offer from someone else on Monday. It's you, isn't it? You're buying my house (and its 2 stories as well!). My DH made me a cabinet so I am not help in finding one online. I did a rough sketch and he put it together. Not fancy but it has been a work horse for me!

Did you put an offer on my house? LOL Ha! No. I can't believe we are doing this. It's such a fixer upper. Like it's disgusting. I had to wear a mask to walk around it smelled so bad. But I wish I was buying your house cause I'm sure it's better than this. But we are going to make it ours and it's going to be great (if they accept our offer).

You can find tons of armoires on used sites for dirt cheap. They were popular when they stored TVs and are no longer in vogue as TVs have gotten larger, slimmer, and mounted to the wall.
But if you are starting from scratch, you have the opportunity for some custom cabinets to really maximize the space. Maybe find some beautiful antique doors and use those for a closet or storage area?
When DH retired from the Air Force, we rented a small house until he found a civilian job. My studio space is in the basement and I hate it. The lack of natural light and distance from the action of the house does NOT inspire me to work down there. For the last 15+ years, I've had the formal living room and/or dining room for my space and I really like that. We are about to start looking for a house and that is in my top 5 musts for the new house.

You can find tons of armoires on used sites for dirt cheap. I saw one that a lady rehabbed. She painted it pink and it's gorgeous. I don't know if I'll have space for something like that but at the very least, I can get a Billy with doors from IKEA. The ceilings are tall so I can go high (even though I won't be able to reach, ha!). When DH retired from the Air Force, we rented a small house until he found a civilian job. My studio space is in the basement and I hate it. The lack of natural light and distance from the action of the house does NOT inspire me to work down there. Yes! Thank you for putting this into words. I've been working in the living room on a tray table. I've got a bin of supplies next to the couch and some stuff in a dresser we keep across the room. I have to put things away after I use them but I don't mind it. It's working for me so it can work in the new house. It will just be nice to have a dedicated space for all of the supplies. I will get creative. If they accept our offer...

My current home, the one under contract now, was a complete fixer upper when we bought it. Literally every surface had to be scrubbed, redone, repainted or thrown out. From top to bottom. Good luck! I hope your offer gets accepted!

We have to rip everything out, fix ceilings, scrub, paint, you name it. I'm curious how long it took you. We will do a lot of the work ourselves but will need contractors for a couple of things.

Yay!! Congratulations! For our renovation, we did a ton ourselves and paid for the renovation as we went. So it took us a long time to get it 'just right'. Like years. But really the first 3-4 months were the worse. Tearing out carpet, painting, etc. My best advice is make a priority list and work down it. it's easy to get sidetracked when you see something else that needs work. But if you keep to your list and just work down it, you will get the most important things done first and the rest you can DIY as you have time and money. OH! And something else that really helped us was I made a list / photos of finishes & colors (almost like a vision board) that we liked so when decision fatigue sets in (and it will), you can refer back to your list to remember what you liked. It's so easy to get overwhelmed but I knew if I would just look back at my vision board, I would be able to easily make the decision.

That's so exciting! If you can do custom built-ins, I'd definitely go that route. In my new space I repurposed two of the HAVISTA cabinets from Ikea and I really like them. The bottom set of cabinets are big enough to hold 12x12 albums and then the top cabinets I store papers, ephemera, paint, etc. We had them in our previous house as a makeshift pantry so I was really happy to be able to repurpose them and ended up loving them way more than I expected. www.ikea.com/us/en/p/havsta-storage-combination-with-doors-white-s39265990/#content Someday I hope to do some custom built-ins but for now, these combined with a few sets of Alex drawers, Mosslanda shelves, and my standing desk work great (all from Ikea). I'm so happy in my new space. We did do a ton of lighting, in my studio and throughout the entire house before we moved in and it's amazing. We added a pot lights everywhere and upgraded all the lighting fixtures in every room and by far that made the biggest difference. I can't recommend lighting everywhere enough. My DH also put everything on smart switches so we can turn off lights from our phones, set special "lighting scenes" so like we have one set for downstairs TV watching, or bedroom at night, etc. Lutron is the brad of switches we used and most of the fixtures were from a company called Shades of Light. Shades of Light's instagram has some lovely examples of seeing the fixtures in rooms. I was so overwhelmed trying to choose, that was really helpful. They had good customer service too when we had to return something that came broken and something else that was not the specs listed on the website. Good luck and how exciting!

noticed the DreamBox is often referenced/recommended. The link wasn't working earlier but it is now. Wow. That is amazing. But super expensive. I'd love something like that. It hides some things and displays other well. So jealous! What a nice space.

We are about to start looking for a house and that is in my top 5 musts for the new house. I have a TV armoire that I use in my scrap room for storage and I LOVE it! It's probably bigger than what you are looking for but I find it works great for holding a huge variety of scrappy things. It was oldest DD's clothing armoire when she was in MS and HS, but she didn't really love it for that purpose (just sort of tolerated it LOL) but she needed it for overflow from her closet. (She was sort of a clothes horse.) Middle DD absolutely hated it because clothing did need to be in some semblence of order to use it for storage...and she mostly kept her clothing in heaps on the floor, LOL. DS never got the chance to have it, as I stole it for my scrap room after both girls rejected it. It's solid wood and heavy; the upper portion has shelves (deep) and the lower portion has 2 drawers (also deep). It's also short enough that I can store things on top of the unit as well and don't have to worry about them being supported because the unit is large and solid.
